Kind 101

A Kinder Vitamin

A while back I shared my thoughts on whether vegans need supplements with the help of macrobiotic expert Christina Pirello. I’ve always thought a lot about vitamins—probably more than most normal people do! Because here’s the thing: I want to get all my nutrition directly from the whole foods I eat, right? And I know that eating like a superhero is giving me everything I need and then some (except for B12—which almost nobody is getting enough of—and Vitamin D—which is really only when I hole up in front of a computer instead of getting out in the sunshine). But, my mind always comes back to this: What if you need a little safety net? Something to make 100% sure that you’re getting all the nutrients you need when life happens and you find yourself without access to greens and other goodness every day?

This first came to mind when I was pregnant with Bear. My midwife confirmed that I was pumping all kinds of healthy awesomeness to my baby, but she recommended taking a prenatal as an “insurance policy.” After all, sometimes I’d be traveling or working crazy hours, and even though I’d be eating kind, I wasn’t always able to take it to that supercharged, superhero next level.

So I set out to find the perfect vitamin—one that was vegan, whole food-based (as in derived entirely and naturally from foods), GMO-free, and certified organic. Turns out that was no simple task! I could find vegan-friendly options, but they wouldn’t be whole food-based. Some vitamins claimed to be nothing but whole foods, but in reality included binders, fillers, and other synthetics. What?! That’s like saying your broccoli is nothing but broccoli and then sneaking in some hydrogenated soybean oil. Gross!

Unfortunately, as I found time and time again, the vitamin market is just like the processed food racket: producers can market themselves as “natural” without meeting any major criteria. Seriously—they can make that claim even though the “natural” sources come from GMO’s, include artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and on and on. They can also pile a whole bunch of chemical isolates and synthetic fillers in there, put a pretty green leaf on the label, and call it a day. Some companies have tried their best to keep it as natural as possible, but I’ve learned the process of making vitamins from organic fruits, veggies, and herbs is slow and expensive. Kind Organics is really an important innovation for these reasons. This is the first multivitamin to achieve this certified organic seal of approval, and the first to use patent-pending Clean Tablet Technology!

If you’ve been led to believe that vitamins need all those chemical synthetic binders and fillers and can’t be made with nothing but real foods, think again! Binders and fillers are the glues to speed up the production process because they help keep vitamins from sticking to the production equipment and can be used for aesthetic reasons (color, shape, sheen, etc). The cheap chemicals commonly used are often hydrolyzed, fractionated stearates and other undesirable synthetics. In addition to these additives being unnatural and unhealthy, many have not been adequately studied or even labeled correctly (so beware of allergic reactions!) even for the well-intentioned since most companies don’t know how to make vitamins without these artificial fillers and binders.

Throughout this tiresome research to seek a pure and wholesome vitamin, my brain really started to hurt! How was it that products meant to be the very essence of plants and their nutrients continually stray so far from that? I realized that if I wanted a truly great vitamin option, I was going to have to make it myself! I was determined to give pregnant women a real safety net for their nutrition during this crucial time—whether they just wanted the extra insurance or they didn’t eat like superheroes. Then, when I dove into the project, I had another realization: Everyone deserves this, not just the pregos!

So I teamed up with Garden of Life, a wonderful company with standout sustainability initiatives and the leaders in Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified nutrition. Together, we created Kind Organics, an entirely new kind of multi that is Certified USDA organic, non-GMO-verified and free of synthetic binders and fillers. That’s right—made with whole foods and love! Selfishly, I’m over the moon about these products! I can use them whenever I’m traveling or making less than ideal food choices on the run, whether it’s a spritz of B-12 or the occasional multi. I’m so excited that this dream has become a reality and that Kind Organics are now available at all major health food stores and retailers such as The Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, EarthFare and Sprouts. And most of all, I’m happy that I could save all of you the hard work involved in finding the best multivitamins. Enjoy!

Thank you! I have very bad reactions to supplements available in the US. (I had to have a full hysterectomy at a very young age so still working on inner balance where some foods just aren’t enough yet). My doctor even suggested that I try and find those produced in Germany because they only use what is listed. No “fillers” or hidden things. My daughter and I have been looking for something like this for a while. For those bits we need. We look forward to trying these!
    Thank you, again!

    How is D3 vegan?

    • spazaru

I’ve been taking vegan D3 for a few years. You can find it from Country Life and a few other companies and now from Alicia. This firm, Vitashine, patened it first I believe: http://vitashine-d3.com/

      • Kimberly Ireland

Thank you spazaru. So, if I’m beginning to understand this correctly, the difference between D2 and D3 is actually not sourcing, it’s the chemical makeup of the vitamin? D3 being more readily absorbable by the body than D2? Is that right?

        • TheKindLife

          Hi Kimberly,

D3 is present in many plant cells, most notably yeast, certain mushrooms and algae. Prior to Vitashine, there had not been a commercially viable way of creating a potent vegan Vitamin D3 supplement from plant sources.

The general science consensus shows that D3 is essential for our immune system, thyroid function, bone health, breast health, heart health, and brain health. The absorption rnate of D3 is high and well-studied. Vitamin D2 may or may not have the same benefits and uses inside the human body. The science is younger and less complete.

          Thanks for the great questions!

This is fantastic. I like to take a multivitamin just in case I can’t eat everything I’d like to. It’s nice to have an organic, non-GMO option! :] // itsCarmen.com ☼

Thank you so much for doing this. I try to eat well but it’s nice to have this line to fall back on. I wish Juice Beauty still made your beauty line:(

    wonderful !! :)

I must say, I’m very excited about this. I do not currently take any supplements, never have. There have only been a few times in my life in which I probably could have used them due to being very poor and not eating much at all. But the rest of the time, I have always done my best to eat a very balanced diet, thinking that I would rather spend my money on food to get my nutrients than on pills to get my nutrients. It has only gotten better since I’ve gone vegan. I’ve thought about taking a B12 supplement, but there weren’t any on the market that I liked. Thank you so much for helping develop this great product. I’ll be purchasing.

This is super cool! I’m so proud of you for making THIS your next step towards health. I wish I could make as big of an impact on the world like you already have. One baby step at a time – I tell myself!

Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to moms all over the world. I’ve read your books and am so pleased that you agree that natural organic whole foods are the true road to vitality. I love your natural outlook on baby making. Your words always make me feel happy when I read them. My 1 year old daughter is a natural baby, just like Bear, and I am pleased to say that she is the healthiest, happiest, bright eyed little cutesy I ever did see!

I really hope you come out with another book. I would love to read about a day in the life of Alicia! I would love to learn about your veggie garden. About Bear. And about your marriage. Your beauty radiates and I’m sure everyone woman, including me, want that.

I know it takes hard work to get healthy and to stay healthy is twice the battle. But it’s worth it all and you help us know it! Thanks Alicia.

These look amazing! I wish you would make one for children. Do you give Bear a multivitamin? Our pediatrician wants my son to take them once he turns one next month, but I’m not finding too many great options.

    • Alicia Silverstone

bear does not- he still has breast milk so gets it all thru me and hid diet
but i like to spray the b 12 in his mouth my kind organics one- tastes so good
i am working on children’s now- will be out next year for sure!

      • Sarah Rogers

I have been searching for an organic food based multi for my girls for YEARS, and would be trilled for you to make one. There is truly a need in this area, as there is no food based multi for young kids on the market at all. The one brand I have seen that has a food based multi is a pill that has to be swallowed, which just won’t work for my 4 and 7 year olds. Please get that children’s multi out soon, and please make it chewable! Thanks for all your wonderful work! So excited to try these vitamins!

  • Jenny Jagger

Thank you SOOOO very much! My 2 year old daughter is just finishing up on formula, we are raising her Vegan and I have been looking in to finding a GOOD, organic multi vitamin for her so she can continue to receive all the proper nutrients she needs to thrive. I also thank you so much for your book, it has been a huge inspiration to me! Can’t wait to read The Kind Mama now <3

But…..fyi…. under the calcium description Garden of Life encourages people to eat more dark leafy greens and DAIRY…. pretty sure you don’t want that statement under your vegan product you’ve worked so hard on!!!

I just bought these from Vita Cost! Excellent vitamins, I feel good about taking these. Thanks for your great advice!

  • Sandy

I just sent a message (and a link to this page) to our local natural food store asking if they would be carrying it! As a new-Vegan (we had gone vegetarian recently and decided to go all the way beginning this week!) I would like to have an insurance policy option for those vital nutrients ;)

  • Shawnah Flyte

This is wonderful news! Ordered some today. It really is hard to find a vegan multi that doesn’t require you to take 6 a day. Thank you

  • miranda.aitken

Are these available in canada? :)

  • Kaisey Murphy

This is awesome! Will I be able to buy them online at some point? I’m pregnant and would really like to get myself some of the prenatal vitamins for my baby house :-)

  • billy belshaw

wow! what an achievement. i can’t begin to guess at the obstacles you had to overcome to launch these but i’m so glad you did. very well done.

  • TheKindLife

    Hi Megan,

Kind Organics is truly the first, and still the only multivitamin to be both Certified as USDA Organic with the USDA seal on the product, and NON GMO PROJECT Verified as NON GMO. Kind Organics products are not only Certified USDA Organic, but also NON GMO PROJECT VERIFIED. None of Pure Synergies multi’s are either certified organic, or verified Non GMO by the NON GMO Project. An additional key differentiator between the two product lines is that only Kind Organics products are vegan, using Vitashine Vitamin D3 as the source for Vitamin D. Pure Synergy products use D3 from lanolin (sheep wool collagen) that is fermented in soy. Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    • Megan Rawle

Thanks so much for the clarification and taking the time to reply to my question. Great product D3 looks good.

  • Julia Rachel

Looks great! I have 2 questions: 1) Do you ship to Canada and 2) Why is there so little calcium in the 1-a-day multivitamin? Thanks :)

    • TheKindLife

      Hi Julie,

      1) Kind Organics is not in a retail in Canada but you can buy from any US retailer like Vitacost.com and they will ship to Canada.

      2) Meaningful amounts of calcium are very bulky when in an organic food form so the multi vitamin has a lower amount due to the limited space we had in the tablet. This is why we launched a standalone calcium in the Kind Organics line. The standalone calcium has 1,000 IUs of vegan certified organic calcium

      Thanks for the great questions!

      • Julia Rachel

        Thanks for your responses :)

  • Alaina Driscoll

I’m so excited to try these vitamins!! Thank you so much, Alicia, for working to create a super kind vitamin line!! Sucralose and other nasty ingredients that are front and center on vitamin bottles are gross enough. To recognize that there are also nasty ways that the vitamins are made, and fillers that lurk inside– the stuff that you don’t read on the label, just makes you not want to take them at all. That’s where I’ve been for the past year or so. I felt great taking a B-12 last year, but I have since stopped because I found I just didn’t enjoy taking them. They tasted gnarly! I’m headed to the Whole Foods today to stock up on Kind Organics and am looking forward to the perky B-12 feeling that I remember from last summer again! I may even start taking an “insurance policy” vitamin like you said! :D Thanks again!!

  • Erin Edwards Salisbury

Bought the B12, D3 and multivitamin yesterday. So excited, these are awesome!!! LOVE the sprays!

  • TheKindLife

No worries! The most common source for D2 is an isolated D that has its origination in yeast. However more recently, D2 has become available from mushroom sources.

  • Lynn House

I am over-the-moon about these vitamins. I am an athletic trainer, wellness coach and yoga instructor. It is so difficult to find quality supplements I can use and recommend to my friends/family/clients! Thanks Alicia!!

  • http://rubyvegan.wordpress.com/ KMM

    Hi
This is fantastic, but could you please look into something for me/us in the UK? Can you please make sure someone stocks it in the UK, or can deliver it from the US but with a shipping cost that’s reasonable (ie, not $35 as I was just quoted). I’ve been looking for this vitamin almost all my life! Thank you for doing all the hard work!
    Peace

  • Andrew Warner

That is awesome. I have them in my wish list on Amazon. As soon as my multivitamin runs out and my wife’s pre-natal runs out, we will be making the switch.
    Thanks for making it happen.

  • Matthew George

Thank you Alicia, your book has been a great motivator and has help me see things I wasn’t considering before. I have been a vegetarian for about 4 weeks and it’s easy peasy but it’s not enough. I am emotionally ready to go Vegan but I still lack certain information necessary for me to make the jump. Your recipes look incredible and I can see why the Vegan lifestyle is no problem for you, but I don’t have a lot of time to shop and prepare such extravagant meals (at least most of them!). I recently ordered Kind Organics 40 plus multi, but I need to know what foods are good for getting the necessary nutrients (the basic essentials) I need to keep my body and mind thriving. I eat carrots and grapes, bananas and pineapple chunks. What else? Also, is there an app for checking food products for Vegan friendliness? Like Smart Balance microwave popcorn, Morningstar, or Amy’s Organics? If I can plan simple menus (raw fruits and veggies) for my day to day and supplement with Vegan friendly products, I think I can take the plunge! Thanks again!!

  • Estelle

I am on my second day of drinking Kind Organics Vitamins. I get a headache 20 mins after drinking it and was wondering why this is happening? I hope I’m not allergic to one of the ingredients. Maybe it’s a type of a detox? Any advice here would be great.. thanks so much!

    • TheKindLife

      Hi Estelle,
Neither B12 or D3 sprays contain any of the common allergens, such as soy, wheat, dairy and peanut. The reaction you are experiencing is unusual and in such circumstances, the best thing we can recommend is that you a) stop using these and any other products you may be consuming with them, and b) create a log of all of the foods and products (including medications and liquids) you are consuming, and c) consult your medical practitioner with this information for guidance. It would be rare to experience “Detox” type symptoms from the addition of a vitamin D or B12 supplement alone, assuming this is your only dietary change. However, everyone’s body responds differently to the introduction of a supplement, especially if your body is presently deficient in the vitamin you are now adding to your daily routine.

      Hope you feel better!!

  • doreenb

I just found at whole foods and purchased, glad to see D3 made from lichen. I would like to know what nanacin is derived from

  • Christine

I am currently taking the prenatal vitamin. I really like it! The only drawback is that the calcium content is a lot lower than others and I don’t want to have to take a calcium supplement in addition to the prenatal. Is there a particular reason why it doesn’t have more calcium?

  • http://www.veganodyssey.com Tali Weiss

I am in love with Kind Organics! I take the B-12 spray, the D3 spray and the women’s multi one a day. I have a question…If i start taking the pre-natal from Kind organics, should I also continue to take the multi?
    Thanks!

  • Magdalena

I am new to all this.. Can you please tell me where I can buy these vitamins? Specially the B12 ..
Thank you! You have inspired me to try this lifestyle =)
