16 Kind Books For Kids

Jan 11, 2013 at 6:03am by Alicia Silverstone

A friend recently asked me to recommend some books for young kids that gently explain why we eat the way we do. I did a little research and asked around, and here’s the list I compiled. Special thanks to all you kind lifers who offered suggestions as well as PETA, PCRM, Farm Sanctuary, and the Post Punk Kitchen “Playground” Forum.

The Girl Who Loved Caterpillars by Jean Merrrill

"In this vivid adaptation of a 12th-century Japanese tale, Izumi finds worms, toads, and especially caterpillars much more fascinating than the hobbies of the ladies in the Emperor's court."

Thank you for the kids books recommendations! I have seen a few of these, but the other ones look great.

To Isabel C. Es freut mich riesig was veganisches aus Deutschland zu lessen. Alles gutte!

I highly recommend "Thats Why We Don't Eat Animals" I bought it for my 3 and 5 year old vegan girls last year to get them to understand why they were vegan. They love it and like it read to them frequently.

Alicia, I'd love to send you a copy of my latest book, Steven the Vegan. It takes place during a school field trip to a Farm Sanctuary where Steven's classmates learn that he is vegan. He takes the opportunity to explain why animals are friends, not food.

The book explains veganism from a compassionate perspective.

Feel free to contact me about the book.

Great list of books! I also read a great article on how to have the "McDonald's" talk on the WSJ the other day.

Another, new book, which was illustrated by a good friend of mine is Steven the Vegan. It is designed to help children explain to their friends and classmates "why they are vegan".

The book was written by Dan Bodenstein and is available on Amazon. "Steven the Vegan" is also on Facebook and at www.Steventhevegan.com

While not necessarily a "child's" book I highly recommend "Milk A -Z" by Robert Cohen. It runs through the alphabet with things like A is for Allergies, B is for Breast Cancer, etc.

Hi Alicia, thanks for the great recommendations, I have passed it on to my friends with little ones and appreciate knowing about all the kind children's books that are available...

I would also like to recommend Victoria Boutenko and family's Raw Food website with many wonderful books for kids, as well as for adults...

I think you and your family will love them.

These look great! I actually read a couple of these when my kids were younger, so I know they are really cute. Kids are so compassionate by nature, so all we have to do is fan that flame! Instead, it usually gets snuffed out by the world around us :( I think that things are changing though!

These are great! Have you heard of any of the children's books written by Victoria & Valya Boutenko? There is one titled "A Gift from Little Bear" that you may especially like. :) Here is the website, www.rawfamily.com/products

They can also be found on Amazon.com.

@PJ Sedgwick - I love your story about your son's book assignment. I hope there are more children out there who are as conscious. Well done, I'm sure you're proud of him!

I've read a couple of these books when I was younger and I think they are really great resources for children, as well as entertaining.
I've especially heard alot of buzz around Ruby Roth's books, and I have seen her interviews, and I think I'm going to go out and buy her books (even tho I'm 27, and the books are meant for kids)!
I believe a kind diet is the answer in this lifetime for everything and I'm glad it is picking up steam and getting the message across.
Unfortunately, I would like to share these books with my boyfriend's nieces and nephews but his family is DEAD-SET against veggies, and I don't even think his oldest niece who is 4, can even make the connection yet that she eats animals. Any suggestions from anyone?

And maybe someone is interested in reading my storybook, “Flame – The Animal Saver part one” because my stories are the very opposite of “Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” since I believe that children should be taught that animals are kind and not evil. I feel very strongly about animals. People do hunt wolves from snowmobiles and poachers do exist and that upsets me very much! I hope that my stories can influence kids to not grow up and become hunters because it makes me sad that people shoot animals.
In my book you can read about how Flame saves cows, a wolf and a wood mouse, for Flame is a small figure that saves animals from various situations. Read what others think about it here: www.lapplandstoryteller.com Happy reading! : )

This is a great list, and we read several to our vegan- from-birth son when he was younger.

A couple of really good seasonal ones to add are "Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving" by Dav Pilkey (about a visit to a turkey farm that inspires compassionate action in some schoolkids) and "A Turkey for Thanksgiving" by Eve Bunting (about a group of forest animals who welcome a wild turkey into their home).

I would like to suggest that older kids and teenagers might really enjoy "The Adventures of Vivian Sharpe, Vegan Superhero" by Marla Rose, about a fifteen-year old-girl who discovers special powers and a new life as an activist after an encounter with the spirit of an animal who had once been a part of her lunch.

      Happy reading!

My son was assigned to read a book a book called "the Milk Makers" for a third grade project. The book glorified the dairy industry and pictured cartoon cows on lush grass. He then had to make a poster. Boy was his teacher not prepared for what he had to say! He wrote about their filthy, cramped living conditions, the chemicals and pus in milk, the fate of the baby calves and the pain the animals feel. And included REAL pictures of dairy farm life. He summed it up with "Cow milk is for baby cows! Now think about that!"
