Apple approved its 1 millionth app last year, and among all those apps are some great vegan options. Here are five vegan apps to check out:
Babycakes $3.99
The app features Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, Mark Bittman from The New York Times, Christina Tosi from Momofuku/Milk Bar, Brooks Headley from Del Posto, and food writer David Leibovitz. On top of that, the Babycakes app features an awesome theme song by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr and tunes by Cults, Bleached, and Bubbles. It includes video recipes, techniques, and tips for donuts, cookies, cupcakes, pies, pretzels, sandwich bread, teacakes, and other goodies. Get the Babycakes app.
21-Day Kickstart FREE
This is a great app from PCRM for anyone who is new to a vegan diet. It gives you 21 days of recipes, making it super easy to plan your plant-based meals. Get the 21-Day Kickstart app.
Dr. McDougall Mobile Cookbook $4.99
You may know Dr. McDougall from the movie Forks Over Knives. His mobile cookbook app is a great recipe resource for low-fat, whole-grain based vegan recipes. Get Dr. McDougall’s Mobile Cookbook app.
Vegan Yum Yum FREE
This recipe app lets you search, view and organize all your favorite recipes from blogger Lolo’s award-winning recipe site. I posted her recipe for Rustic Bread and Eggplant Lasagna a bit ago. Enjoy! Get the Vegan Yum Yum app.
Animal Free FREE
This app provides a comprehensive list of ingredients that are vegan, and those that are derived from animal products. It’s incredibly handy for deciphering obscure ingredients on food labels. Get the Animal-Free app.

I love having the Happy Cow app. It pulls a great variety of options to choose from when eating out in an area. You can specify what you want from a restaurant and how far of a radius to pull from. The database is pretty comprehensive compared to free apps and is worth the few bucks I spent! -

I recently made the Sweet Potato Bisque recipe from the Forks over Knives cookbook and it was heavenly! My 17 year old carnivorous daughter ihhaled it and asked me to make it again the next day. The recipe was super easy to follow and it only took a little over 30 minutes so it was a great time saver too. -

Hiya, Alicia. I would like the Babycakes app, I think, and the Animal Free. They're the ones which would appeal most to me. Have a great day, Miss Silverstone, aka Babycakes! xx. -
Hi Alicia, Thanks so much for the mention on the McDougall App. I just wanted let everyone know that we are in the process of revamping the app to improve usability and also to create an Android version. Looking forward to checking out some of these other apps!
Warmly,
Irene McDougall -
The Whole Foods app lets you sort by diet type and includes vegan. The best thing about it is that you can type in an ingredient that you have on hand and it will give you recipes based on that ingredient. You can also put all of the ingredients from any recipe directly in to a shopping list. Obviously they're hoping you buy the ingredients at their store but the app works regardless so you can always just shop your favorite store :) You can also sort by gluten free or other diet types, as well. I've used the "vegetarian" option to expand my choices and just make substitutions for vegan alternatives. They have some really good ideas and it's fairly easy to use. -
I find the Chemical Maze app so helpful! I have the full version but I think there is a free version also. It's great for checking if additives and ingredients are animal derived and tells you what to avoid on a vegan diet!
I also LOVE vegan Yum Yum!
also allrecipes.com has a great option where you can easily refine recipes to be vegan :) -
I use Happy Cow to locate vegan options nearby. The Animal Free app is available for Android. I just downloaded to my Galaxy S3. :) -
I love the recipe sharing app & site: VegWeb
VeganSteven helps you search for vegetarian or vegan friendly restaurants in your area
VeganXpress gives you an easy list of vegan options at fast food/chain restaurants, candy & snacks, beer list, wine list, & liquor list. -
Green Vegan is my favorite. You can look up thousands of alcohol lists to find out if your favorite drink is manufactered Vegan or not! Love it! -
What about vegan apps for those of us who aren't iphone users? I'm so tired of everyone assuming we are all Apple users. -
There's a typo on the picture - it says BabyBakes when it should be BabyCakes. Babycakes does come up in the search if you type in BabyBakes, but knowing the right one makes it easier ;) -
I do the same thing as Patrick mentions, using Evernote. Super easy to clip from Web and then add tags.
None of the apps. mentioned above are available for Android. Pooh! One Android app. I really like is Happy Cow, if you are looking for places out to eat. I would love to hear of other apps. that are either available for both iPhone and Android or Android. -
My current favorite is Evernote! I use the Chrome app "Evernote Web Clipper" to save and edit vegan recipes from any website. You can then use the Evernote app on iPad or Android to browse saved recipes. You can save recipes with special tags such as #breakfast or #dessert or #gluten-free or whatever _you_ decide is important. I like the ability to edit and update the saved recipes (increase the spice, decrease the spice, whatever). And it makes printing out recipes very easy--many webpages are not formatted for easy printing. Accounts at Evernote can be free or premium. I've been using the free one without problems for years.
