Repower America recently asked their members what people in their communities are doing to address climate change, and they got responses from all across the country!
One especially inspiring project is happening here in California. Mountain View / Los Altos High School is building a 1.26-Megawatt solar photovoltaic system in their school parking lot, that will power 45% of the school district's current electricity needs!
Are there any similar projects happening in your community?

My daughters high school, Ann Sobrato High in Morgan Hill installed solar panels in the school parking lot last year. A few years ago, we installed solar panels for our home & pool & it has reduced our energy output & saved us a lot of money!

This is so rad. California is so progressive when it comes to these ways of thinking; I wish their attitudes would sweep over the rest of the nation! :)

All of the schools in our town do this, and they have live cameras and data about each school on the internet so we can see the results. http://www.laceyschools.org/site_res_view_template.aspx?id=576b55b5-2f22-4178-a9c4-813fff0b2c05

Solar panels are being installed at schools here in Australia - particularly those up north where the sun doesn't stop shining.

The school district I work for already has solar panels in all of their school parking lots. It was a ballot measure passed in San Jose, CA though. So the city and voters are responsible, not the school.

Congrats and kudos to all who helped to bring solar to your school! We've been doing it here, in fact our entire eco-project is off-grid and on PV (solar), hydro and wind.
We just added more panels and are powering residences, guest rooms and suites, all appliances (including electric massage chairs in guest rooms, fitness equipment and air con!) and kitchenettes, plus our entire restaurant and the laundry! My parents just told me that my old high school (Lynbrook High School in San Jose, CA) installed solar panels over the entire parking lot. Apparently they are already producing revenue for the school district...fantastic!

I think this is an excellant idea.. We live at Grand Coulee Dam, WA and it would be so awesome with all our sun shine in Eastern Washington our schools could afford to go this route. But the High school is literally falling apart and no funds for fixing.. :-( WTG California

This is doubly sweet, for the panels shade the parking lot. Since the cars park in the shade, they are cooler to sit in at the end of the day. Great idea.

Great to see a school driving change like this!
After recently looking at the hefty environmental footprint of heading back to school (you may be interested in this infographic outlining back to school related waste: http://www.ethicalocean.com/blog/back-school-waste-infographic/) it's great to see a school trying to reduce their footprint.

I have not heard of anything this progressive in Kansas City. Some schools have a recycling program and yard sales (I think those are green too, in a way:). I've passed by one home that was built into a hill and looked like it was a green home, and there was a prius parked outside:) Maybe next time I'll "woman up" and stop to talk to the owners. Also, some stoplights are solar powered. This is about it for Midwest.

oh nice! that's the town right next to mine :) I hope my former high school will follow suit! :D

I have my masters in teaching and this is exactly what kind of school I want to start. I want to open up a school that is completely green. I want to have a green house on the property and a garden and use those resources to feed the students. This is my dream and I hope to one day make it come true.

I believe La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, San diego has some solar panels to power their school as well... hope the trend continues!

That's great, i wish our local school systems would take note's. I moved to Birmingham because of work and have never seen anything remotely close to this.
