As you know, millions of turkeys suffer terribly at this time of year. Happily, Farm Sanctuary's Adopt-a-Turkey Project provides several ways you can celebrate turkeys and combat the cruelty. This year, Ellen DeGeneres is returning as spokesperson for Adopt-a-Turkey, encouraging Americans to save, not eat a turkey this year - here's how you can get involved:
Sponsor a Turkey
Participate by sponsoring a turkey and telling all your friends about it on Facebook and Twitter. To see a gallery of Farm Sanctuary's adoptable turkeys, go here. Depending on how much you'd like to give, you can sponsor a single turkey or an entire flock! You can also make a simple donation to Adopt-a-Turkey here.
Help With Media Outreach
If a donation isn't possible, you can help with media outreach by writing letters to the editor of your favorite publication. Farm Sanctuary provides tips and tricks for how to effectively do this here. You can also reserve ad space in your local newspaper, then contact Farm Sanctuary. They'll send your newspaper the correct size camera ready ad. A third way you can reach out to the meadia is by asking to have a PSA aired in your community. Read how to do that here.
Host a Potluck
Get all of your friends together for a delicious, cruelty-free feast and share heart-warming turkey rescue stories. Make it a fun affair that veg and veg-curious friends alike can enjoy. A pre-holiday potluck is also a great opportunity to test recipes for Thanksgiving- stay tuned for more on that soon!
How are you planning to help turkeys this Thanksgiving?

I adopted my first turkey last year. Her name is Kima. The Farm Sanctuary is amazing. I tweeted one of their representatives asking how Kima was and he was able to give me an updated! It was great! It's definitely a tradition for me now.

I'd love to "adopt" that crazy looking Payton! This is my priority when I get paid next Friday. I love seeing wild turkey outside, and have not seen any this year yet, but I cringe everytime I hear gunshots(like 15 minutes ago)

I haven't yet, but I will adopt today. Last year was the first year I did it. Thanksgiving makes me so sad knowing how many turkeys are being tortured and killed.
Check out this cute turkey video...

Yay... I'm sooo happy!! I just adopted Skip!! We had a large male turkey when I was a child (among a lot of other pet birds). And one was this large male who one day was chasing me for my potato chips lol!! He was as tall as I was at the time... I'll never forget him!!

Some wonderful friends of mine, Melanie and John Cochran, own The Wild Cow (http://www.thewildcow.com/twc/) in Nashville and host a vegan pot-luck at their home for Thanksgiving. It's absolutely amazing to spend a wonderful day of thanks with friends, loved ones and furbabies who share your same kind values. It's truly a day of gratitude. And the food is AMAZING!

I love this program! Every year there is a turkey at our big family gathering and despite the fact that I can't save that turkey, I can adopt one and know that THAT turkey was saved because I didn't want to eat it.
I talk-up this program like crazy...One of my non-veg friends was chatting about how her daughter (veg) didn't want to come to their Thanksgiving because they would be serving and when I told my friend about the Adopt-A-Turkey program and ran write home and adopted a turkey in her daughter's honor...now her daughter plans on coming...this program is great!
I have a blog about Adopt-A-Turkey scheduled on my site for this weekend.
