Action Alert: Stop Wal Mart's Abuse of Pigs

Aug 2, 2012 at 11:03am by Alicia Silverstone

When it comes to animal  rights, Wal Mart is worse than McDonald’s. Many food chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Chipotle no longer buy meat from providers who use gestation crates, Wal Mart still does.

An undercover investigator from Mercy for Animals worked for two months at a farm that supplies pork to Wal Mart, and reported on the horrifying abuses there. Pigs are kept in gestation crates so tiny they can’t move. These intelligent creatures go insane from boredom and discomfort and attempt to bite their way out of these tiny metal cages. Many of them have open wounds and sores on their skin that goes untreated. Can you imagine spending your life that way, only to be led to slaughter when you are finally freed? Watch the video here, and show someone who still eats meat.

But most importantly, you can sign a petition here to protest Wal Mart’s support of cruel gestation crates. Let’s put an end to this cruel practice.

Signed the petition and wrote Walmart a boycott letter. I also let them know that my 9-year old daughter and her friends have been boycotting Walmart for some time now due to clear cutting issues in the remaining tiger habitats.

I feel sick when I see this. I sent it to people I know and wrote. Ignorance is bliss but knowlege is power. Becuase the people I know say I don't want to see this about my food...I don't understand why it is in your body. So this is another reason I HATE Walmart.

Is Wal mart worse than McDonald’s? – my answer would be no.... Wal mart, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and any company that sells, processes and supplies animal flesh to anyone, all play an equal part in the murder and torture of animals.

Of course we would like to think that the pigs are better off out of the gestation crates but they are still suffering abuse and vile torture while in captivity up to the day they are slaughtered. The absence of gestation crates doesn’t mean the horrifying abuses end, in fact the gestation crates are only a small percent of the pigs suffering, of course the standards may be slightly better, but not much better.

The problem with thinking that some animals are better off with one company than with another company just because they have a few more inches to move around can cause People to stop being concerned about the animals’ welfare, they seem to think it’s now humane to keep animals as a food item. Though the animals are not in gestation crates it doesn’t mean they are in a countryside farmyard and have a lovely time until they are slaughtered.... the agribusiness love it because the public become less concerned. What needs to be focused on is the fact that any animal kept, used, tortured and abused for human entertainment, consumption etc is wrong.

How can any intelligent human believe that we are entitled to domesticate, exploit and kill, and that animals can’t think, feel or experience emotions. We shouldn’t applaud one company just because it is abusing animals in a lesser way. We should seek to end human tyranny over other animals, not make our tyranny more’ humane’.

McDonald's and Oscar Meyer are ending their association with suppliers who use these cages in 2022. Smithfield Inc., the worlds largest supplier is a little better....2017! Really?? 5-10 years from now? Not fast enough for me. Who's making the cages? Let's find out and go after them too. They're just as culpable in my book.

I worked for the company for 7 years and I will tell you, that company is Evil! They want cheaper products so producers use cheaper quality ingredients to make it happen. They want cheaper meat, the farms use smaller cages so they can get more critters packed in. I absolutely Hate Walmart! I haven't even gotten to the part of how badly they treat their associates!

I find it sad that most humans love animals but don't give a thought about where their food comes from or don't want to step out of their comfort zones and do something about it.

It's unbelievable that we still live in a society that deems animals a food item. A fundamental change in the way humans view other animals must begin with food, once this happens, humans will realize that agribusiness is the prime culprit behind the loss of forests and many other issues the world is facing and we can do something to stop it today – just don’t eat animals and animal bi-products - this would have an incredible positive effect on the world!

A start would be for companies to be honest and transparent and for governments to realize that all animals have the right to freedom on their own terms, this should be law.

I signed! Let's spread the word.

      Reddit has a thread now:
      http://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalRights/comments/xkw4b/action_alert_tell_walmart_to_stop_using_pork/

Pass it on. I think this is one cause we can win. Especially because many of Walmart's competitors have already switched to non-crate suppliers. Boycott Walmart until they change!

It is a pretty sad situation to know that one of the biggest box stores in our country could care less about people or animals. If you look at the history of Walmart and how it comes into communities and runs out mom and pop stores you would see that their main concerns are self serving and to get the cheapest products made at whatever cost to people in third world countries and to animals all for profit to the company.

It is important to learn about these issues so as consumers we can share this information with our circles and vote with our dollars. Buy quality plant-foods that don't harm anyone and they are good for you. Share this info on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest and wherever you can so people can be aware of this horrendous treatment of animals such as pigs that are a close relative to dogs. You would hopefully never treat a dog like this. A dog as a pig likes to run around and interact with you. They are a joy in this dark world. They make us smile and they are sweet creatures that do not deserve to be treated like a product with no regard to their feelings.

These animal issues are a concern to me as I think most people never see it or think about it, but it goes on every minute of everyday.
Please try to be a part of the solution. I encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and do something. You will feel better helping in some way.
