Anne Hathaway's Vegan Wedding

Oct 3, 2012 at 6:03am by Alicia Silverstone

Are vegan weddings becoming the norm? Anne Hathaway recently wed actor & jewelry designer Adam Shulman in a traditional Jewish ceremony in Big Sur, followed by a reception with a 100% vegan menu.

She worked with the same event planner who put together Natalie Portman’s vegan wedding. Ecorazzi reports that Anne Hathaway’s menu included veggie burgers, cupcakes, and truffled mac & cheese. The wedding was reportedly small and intimate – just friends and family with the gorgeous natural backdrop of Big Sur.

It sounds like a beautiful day. Hooray, Anne Hathaway! So happy for her. What a beautiful setting and this picture is lovely!

What would be on your wedding menu? Or if you had a vegan wedding, what did you serve?

@ AB85: Thank you for that giant laugh that I endured for at least three straight minutes. I think it actually strengthened my abs! Any way to get a work-out!

I would serve Curried Cashew Cauliflower at my vegan wedding, as it is quite divine.

      Here is the recipe:

I love Anne even more now. Someone should buy her a vegan designer handbag that benefits Mercy for Animals at the SAME TIME as a belated gift, don't you think? :) Shameless promotion shameless promotion because the WishYouWereVegan charity auction is happening RIGHT NOW!

The briefest of explanations is this: Four Beautiful Italian Vegan Handbags are on auction right now via eBay with proceeds benefitting Mercy for Animals. I would LOVE if you could check it out! Then of course, bid if you can -- share if you can't.

*My apologies, in advance, to both Alicia and the readers of this page. My intention was not to be pulled into such ludicrous, but I feel I must retort...

      Dear Jean-Michel,

Since you've obviously forgotten, this is a website called "The Kind Life" and this is a post on a thread, where we were all discussing options for maintaining vegan menus at weddings... until you showed up, that is.

I can't believe that someone could get so hung up on the fact that Anne Hathaway's wedding included a traditional Jewish ceremony!

"Personally I really don't have anything against Jewish ceremonies." you say? Disgraceful - I say! There's no reason that you should have anything against Jewish ceremonies, regardless of whether or not you know anything about them; its an entire world and culture that has absolutely NOTHING to do with you.

Then you quickly go on to note, "my opinion about the persons of Jewish religion..."
but you've failed to realize that you are in NO position to maintain any opinion, on any persons, of any religion!

Furthermore, since you had already admitted that you, 'don't know much about their "way of life" and habits,' as you so crudely put it, then you're certainly not in a position to try to educate anyone in regards to the history of antisemitism... nor is this the proper forum to do so.

In your trying to establish that you're NOT an antisemitic creep, with horrific grammar, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, and belief that you should let just anything spout out of your mouth and keyboard, I'm certain the only one you've possibly convinced is yourself. That being said, nice work on using the words "person," "personal," and "personally," incorrectly and multiple times in one sentence... my brain cells just started crying.

Your having even read "Mein Kampf" and then referring to someone being mentioned within those atrocious pages, as an honor, speaks volumes about you.

'the persons we could label as the real "Jews" we don't like are the "doctors"...'
and just the fact that you propose labeling those you dislike as "the real jews' is deplorable. Your hating doctors? Well, that's an entirely separate conversation that I have no intention of having with you.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS, despite your typing a lengthy, poorly written paragraph in an effort to prove that you are not antisemitic, you have, actually, just completely validated that you are the epitome of ignorant antisemitism. Otherwise, you would have just left a comment in regards to 'Anne and Adam's' vegan wedding menu, like everyone else did; or perhaps said nothing, as it seems you most definitely should... at all times.

You've essentially just run into a room where civilized people were having a nice conversation, screamed "I'm not an idiot!" and then went on to try and support why. If you hadn't of come running into the room and screamed that in the first place, nobody would've thought otherwise... even more so, nobody asked, nobody cares, nobody knows you, or wants to, and you have no business in this room. You ARE an idiot.

      Farewell

My husband and I are both vegetarian, however, I had once worked in an amazing vegan restaurant and was vegan for several years. Many of our friends still are, and we wanted to make sure that no one went home hungry! While the entire wedding was 100% vegetarian and locally sourced, the first and third courses were vegan, with options for the second course and dessert. I had no qualms over letting our guests know ahead of time (our RSVP cards had two options to choose from: vegan or vegetarian). I'm sure the many meat-eaters on my husband's side were concerned when they noticed the absence of the sad same-olds, "chicken or fish?"... but that's no biggie in my books. They thought they knew what to expect and we gladly proved them wrong. I was going to post a picture of the menu, but I can't figure it out here, so I've just copied and pasted below, instead. Please enjoy! We all sure did :)

      FIRST COURSE
Golden Nalo beets, roasted carrots, shaved fennel, micro shiso, Hamakua tomato vinaigrette

      SECOND COURSE
Cauliflower Risotto with lemon and masala bread crumbs

      SECOND COURSE (Vegan Option)
Roasted butternut squash and ginger soup

      THIRD COURSE
Ma’’o Farms Eggplant timbal with organic polenta and Ma’’o Kale

      DESSERT
Wailua Chocolate –– Kauai Caramel crunch bars with Hanapepe salt

Kula Strawberry Mascarpone Tartlets with black pepper foam

      DESSERT (Vegan Option)
Tea Poached Asian Winter Pears with Chocolate Spice Infused Creme

      WEDDING CAKE
Chunky coconut pineapple, layered with fresh bananas, mango curd, coconut cream, shredded coconut.

@sckain I love that idea of not emphasizing that all the food is vegan. I'm so stealing that technique if I ever get hitched! :)

And your wedding menu sounds absolutely DELICIOUS!

I should have mentioned, we put 0 emphasis on anything being vegan. We did this with the purpose of not stirring up any preconceived notions in anyones head. We wanted the food judged on it being good food not good vegan food.

I had a Vegan wedding this past Saturday. It was a lovely blur :) We held it at the Patapsco Female Institute in Old Ellicott City, Maryland. Of course i'm biased, but, it was an amazing day.

If I recall correctly this is what we served (everything 100% vegan)
      Entree
      - Butternut Squash Lasagna
      - Marinated Portobello & Polenta with Spinach
      - Chopped Salad
      Apps
      - Assorted empanadas
      - Spinach and artichoke dip
      - 7 Layer Dip
      Desert
      - Assortment of Vegan Cupcakes
      - Coffee
      Drinks
      - Fresh Basil Lemonade
      - Fresh Iced Tea

My wife or the caterer could probably give a better description. I just remember everything was really good! (Thanks Zia's in Towson and Roots in Clarksville)

P.S. Hathaway though you stole our thunder for the 29th! But, I'm only a little bitter. (j/k)

My husband and I just got married in August of this year and we had a vegan wedding. The food turned out amazing, and even surprised a lot of relatives that thought that not serving meat at a wedding was unacceptable. We had a French-style wedding, since my husband's father is from France, and served crepes or pasta as the entrees. The crepes were filled with nuts, veggies, spices, and a little melted Daiya. The pasta was filled with roasted veggies and topped off with a garlic sauce made from a lot of spices and Earth Balance. Both dishes tasted great! We also had a lot of yummy hors d'oeuvres such as "faux" gras (made out of walnuts and lentils), onion tartlettes, ratatouille tarts, hummus, and spinach in filo. It was so good.

I'm impressed with the enlightenment demonstrated by many Hollywood stars, which is in stark contrast to the successful executives who promote content denigrating those not fitting into an ideal consumer model. Get to know your poor country vegetable farmer who can help you live a longer, healthier, and happier life. Forget the Hollywood model of American life and become who you are and not who someone else wants you to be.

I wish Vegan weddings were becoming a trend. Vegan food lets everyone (barring food allergies) enjoy the meal. The last wedding I went to was hard on a vegetarian. I could eat the fruit kabobs and cheese & crackers from the appetizer table (and got the stink eye for taking 2 kabobs). The dinner afforded me carrots and roasted potatoes (both done in butter I'm sure - the rice was done in chicken stock). And I could eat the cupcakes served for dessert much later in the evening. I had to get my husband to request more carrots and roasted potatoes for me from the caterer, because I was pregnant, hungry, but embarrassed to ask for more food (I was at is she fat or pregnant stage). A vegan would have had to bring their own food, there were not enough fruit kabobs to go around.

My husband and I were married 4 1/2 years ago and we had a morning wedding with a vegan brunch to follow. The brunch included a waffle bar, tofu scramble, pastries, grilled fruit kebabs and tempeh hash. We also had a dessert table with cupcakes, pies, cookies and a small wedding cake, that were all homemade. My husband and I photograph weddings, so we've attended a LOT of weddings. To date though, we still agree that ours was the best we've ever been to. :) Even though out of the 150 guests, there were only a handful of us that were / are vegan, everyone still loved the food and there was very little left at the end. Yay for vegan weddings!
