Beyond Meat: The Future of Meat Substitutes?

Jul 26, 2012 at 12:34pm by Alicia Silverstone

Whole Foods stores across Northern California have started selling a new item called Beyond Meat Veggie Chicken Strips, a soy protein product that claims to be the closet thing to real chicken available on the market. Biz Stone and Evan Williams, better known as the founders of Twitter, are backing the company, with Stone mentioning that the product tastes so much like chicken that some non-meat eaters might be turned off by the convincing taste and texture. From the photos alone it does look an awful lot like animal product, and though many long-time vegans may definitely not be interested in the faux-animal flavor, it could be helpful for flirts.

Check out my nourishing nishime here!

Gardein and Field Roast and all the other yum vegan products are essentially doing the same thing. If these products help people to stay away from chicken and actual meat, I'm all for it!

What are your thoughts on meat substitutes? Would you try Beyond Meat?

i would try this. i love to eat all the veggies i can at every sit down meal, but the substitutes still appeal to me at times...i don't think the 'real meat' look is all that appealing because i am not a huge fan of the look or texture of real animal meat, BUT i would def give it a try :)

I really like some of the meat substitutes out there like breakfast sausage and those chicken cutlets made of fungi, but I've had some fake meat before that tasted so real it really freaked me out, grossed me out and I lost my appetite. I'm willing to try any non-meat meat substitute and I think this is a positive product if it will help the "flirts" and anybody else struggling with becoming a veggie or vegan.

I typically can't eat meat alternatives as there is usually gluten or other ingredients that I'm allergic too. However, I do think that those flirting with vegan would try it and I'm on that list!

To processed for me. I like the fresh stuff I make at home. There are so many ways to good great plant base foods why mess it up with this crap! Anyway, if I served that to my 5 year old, I think it would confuse him to much, he's so against eating animals (my doing oops).

I would not eat that as it is highly processed and it is soy. Plus, it looks too much like meat and apparently tastes too much like meat also.

The only brand of meat sub I like are the chic'n patties made by Qorn. All the other vegan deli slices taste like cardboard and most of them and the "hot dogs" are kind of grey in color, very unappealing. I agree with Tasha Kaye, whole foods are best. Anything that is made to look like meat is still processed food, ickkkkk!

In our house we do not eat faux meets because they are usually soy or wheat based both of which my son is allergic to. Though that picture of the faux chicken I find revolting so I think I will stick to me beans and lentils.

It contains soy protein isolate, which, according to the research of Dr. John McDougall, has been linked to cancer. Enough said.

I tried a similar product the other day, and it took a lot time to convince myself it wasn't actually chicken. It tasted good, but I don't think I'll be having too much of it. It got to me a bit too much to actually make it part of my meals on any sort of constant basis.

I stay away from all faux meat products and eat whole foods instead. I have no desire to taste products that imitate meat products. I do think they are a great stepping stone for those that are wanting to become vegetarian or vegan.

This is something that has been in my head for a while. Like how I prefer the Real Food Daily restaurant over Veggie Grill. My boyfriend obviously loves Veggie Grill because he says it tastes just like chicken. The first time I tried Veggie Grill, I had to look up online right there if I was actually eating faux chicken... It totally scared me to death! hahaha. I've gone more times recently because they treat me to a free entree for my birthday, and my bf's. I find myself going there for the buffalo wings, because before I was vegan, chicken buffalo wings was one of my favorite treats ever.
So, although I may not want to eat super real tasting faux meat, I think it's a great idea for non vegans/vegetarians to try out something not so horrible as dead animals.

When I first became vegan I used faux meat/substitutes for protein and to ease the transition and they did in fact make for a smoother change. However as I began to research and experiment with recipes I found that I didn't need to rely on these products and so now I use them sparingly.

      Amber and DeeDee,
They disguise MSG behind any number of names, not just "natural flavoring". Pea protein is one, soy protein isolate, yeast extract, etc... there's well over 40+ different names commonly used in place of "MSG". Google it.
Like I said, I tried several different avenues to contact them and get a direct answer and it never came. That speaks volumes to me.

Sam - I'm doing a radio piece on a short deadline & wonder if you'd be willing to talk to me on the phone about how to tell from labeling if a product contains MSG. (I'd ask a few other questions, such as: your name; general education; what part of the country you're in; and what interests you in knowing whether there's MSG in the processed food you purchase. Anything you don't want to discuss on-air of course I will respect! (This won't be a live interview, just taped & then I'll edit it.) If you're willing, please contact me on this site & let me know how to get hold of you (I'm on FB if you want to go that route). Thanks! Patricia McMillen (Northern IL freelance radio journalist)

I absolutely love the MORNINGSTAR FARM chickenless strips. Literally just had some today. I take a slice of toasted sprouted bread, spread a natural spiced mustard/mayo on it, some shredded moz-like cheese, fresh spinach pieces, sun dried tomatoes and those awesome warm strips. I put under broiler or in micro to warm it again and serve with a knife and fork to savor! It is a favorite for my husband and I.
YES- all natural is better than this processed one, yet I think that it's a great invention for a wise choice on the "quick" that is animal free.

I really try to limit our exposure to anything processed - this includes a lot of these faux meat substitutes. I feel that I can get so much flavor using natural ingredients and spices. One of the contributing factors to the reason I became Vegan was the unbelievable amount of chemicals in meats, dairy and processed foods. At this point it seems silly to eat something like this. However, this is for my personal preference.

I do feel we do need these types of foods on the market. I have some friends that have played with a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle and these foods may help them finally make the transition over to a kinder, healthier choice.

      Thang,
"Natural Flavoring" can mean many things that are not MSG.

      From wikipedia:

The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations describes a "natural flavorant" as:

the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or any other edible portions of a plant, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose primary function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.[3]

Amber H. Do you see Yeast extract and Natural Flavoring, these are MSG, by law they can either use the word MSG or Natural Flavoring, ( there are also other words at least more than a dozen they can use in place of MSG so that why you will never find MSG on any of the foods label )How do you know If it contains MSG ? when anything that is highly processed like in this case which is extremely processed, it is very likely to have MSG, It is very toxic. Is it unhealthy ? I do not want to use the word unhealthy, It is poison and deadly, and I am sad because It is available in some of our stores, my co-workers who are also vegan like me we all do not like it and we are going to tell our vegan customers not to buy it, but they know anyway, this highly processed soy protein isolate is very toxic, this product contains Dipotassium Phosphate, Titanium Dioxide food addictive, it is truly a chemically stuff not natural at all. Eat plant-base foods, whole foods, Unprocessed or minimum processed foods with no food addictive, nutrient dense-foods, foods that you can prepare in your kitchen, not in the factory like this one. Stay healthy.

I enjoy them but they are usually too high in sodium and fat. Also, for those of us watching our nickles, they are usually very expensive. I have recipes for homemade tofurky and a vegan roast, without the salt; so I will more than likely try this item once, then clone the recipe if I enjoy the flavor.

I think it is a great idea. Not so much for myself, I've been vegetarian for 17 years and semi vegan (dairy on weekends if I really want it) for about 6 mos. But, I think it is awesome for my meat loving husband, I would be able to make him more meatless meals!!! I've already got him onto crumbles in chili, tacos, shepard's pie so the more I can add and make meatless for him the better :)

The idea of this is great, and I'd love to try it, but looking at the ingredients it seems to contain MSG. I've tweeted, e-mailed, and even posted on Facebook and they never responded to this inquiry. That's more than enough to put me off this company and product...
