My Birthday Plans
UPDATE: Yesterday, they surprised me at rehearsals with brownies, cupcakes, and cookies from Blossom. After rehearsal, I took the subway home and spent the day with Bear. Christopher rode his bike to Pure Food and Wine, because I was having a hankering for their Nori Kimchi Cashew Cheese Rolls. Yum!!
It was a nice, mellow, sweet day.

A couple years ago, I had a fun birthday bash at Animal Acres, a sanctuary just outside of Los Angeles. In this photo from my Animal Acres party, I’m hiding my pregnancy. The woman in the blue top is Mona May. She designed the costumes for Clueless and Vamps.
Last year, my husband surprised me for my birthday. Bear was five months old, and I had just finished shooting in New York. So I was pooped! My husband said, put on your PJs and come downstairs. And a few very close friends were there. It was nice – just a quiet celebration with Bear and a few friends.
This year, I’m in the middle of rehearsals for the play I’m in The Performers. I’ll probably spend the day rehearsing and taking care of Bear. And that’s it! When things quiet down, I’ll meet some friends for dinner and hopefully dancing – maybe in a week or two.
Where should we go dancing in NYC?
I'm looking for a place that's not scene-y or club-y, but just fun and easy to dance. If you have a suggestion, leave it in the comments!\

Happy Birthday, Alicia! I am so grateful for the work you do. As a college professor, I show your website to all of my classes every semester and introduce them to a vegan lifestyle. Sometimes I even bring them treats from our local vegan bakery in Providence called Wildflour. They love the brownies and cupcakes from there. Keep working for the cause . . . -

Okay, I have an assortment of NYC clubs for your choosing!
Home Sweet Home (Lower East Side) - Hippies meet Electro. Major dance party.
Bowery Electric (East Village) - more of the same, minus the hippies.
Mister H at The Mondrian - club aesthetic + gogo dancers + club-goers with a been-there, done-that NY attitude = it actually feels laid back. (this is the only hotel club/bar I would recommend. The Standard, Jane, Dream...all a mob scene.)
Grey Lady (LES) - rock + dance + food!
Apotheke (Chinatown) - Fun pharmacy-inspired cocktail lounge with great music that is definitely more of a bar, but get the right group of friends around and spontaneous dance moves happen.
Le Baron (Chinatown) - Parisian club comes to NY and is a a great place to shake it. More clubby, though...

Happy birthday, Alicia! It was my 36th birthday, too! I also spent the day with my husband and taking care of my baby (who is just a few month younger than Bear). I want to have an Animal Acres birthday one year soon - sounds like so much fun! I'm honored to share a birthday with such a cool person. :)

I say, "why plan something?" Go to dinner and pick a neighborhood and just walk into a random bar. I love the West Village for things like that. It's so laid back. -

Animals Asia was able to rescue two Moon bear cubs from smugglers. That's two little bears saved from the bile trade. Awesome.

This is *completely* unrelated, but... Alicia could you work your vegan voodoo to get this vegan eatery reopened in DC? Cafe Green is one of the best vegan restaurants I've been to and it's incredibly sad that they had to shut it down!
