My husband is a big football fan, so during NFL season, Sundays usually include cooking the food we bought at farmers market and watching the game. This burger recipe from the sweet kind lifers Lindsay and Steven’s blog Kiss Me I’m Vegan and it looks like a great one to try for a casual Sunday dinner:

BeST Burgers (Black Bean, Sweet Potato, Tempeh Burgers)
Ingredients
*optional
2-3 small sweet potatoes
dash of almond milk
*1-2 Tbsp agave nectar
heavy sprinkling of cinnamon
1 can black beans (or bean of your choice! Garbanzos are yummy.)
1 packet tempeh
3-4 Tbsp ketchup
3-4 tsp garlic
*1 tsp Braggs Liquid Aminos or soy sauce
*1 tsp balsamic vinegar
*sprinkling of salt
1/8 - 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
*dashes of hot sauce to your own spice preference
1 - 1 1/2 cup quick oats
Instructions
1. Boil the sweet potatoes until soft enough to put a fork through. While they are boiling, soak the beans in water, rinse, and toss them into a medium/large bowl. Mash beans and then crumble the tempeh into the bowl with them.
2. When the sweet potatoes are done, mash in small bowl. Add almond milk, agave (optional), and cinnamon. Thoroughly combine sweet potato mixture with beans and tempeh in larger bowl. Add all remaining ingredients except oats, mixing well. Finally, add oats, about 1/3 cup at a time, mixing until a slightly firmer texture is reached.
3. If you like, cover the bowl and refrigerate mix OR form into patties on baking sheet, cover, and pop in thefridge for 30 min to an hour or so (recommended). Make small/medium balls and flatten them out into patties w/your hands or using a spatula.
4. Add oil to a pan and cook the burgers over medium-high heat, keeping an eye on the bottom for your desired browning/blackness. Flip and cook on opposite side. You can also bake them at 400°F in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or to your desired browning/crispiness, flipping halfway through; you can lightly dust the sheet with flour if you want to prevent sticking. (Outdoors? Try throwing them on the grill! Make sure you form some firm patties!)
5. Add some avocado, grilled onions or mushrooms on top for a little extra pizzazz! Makes 5-7 BeST Burgers for your taste buds, stomach, and overall enjoyment.

I made these last night for dinner and they ROCKED!!! I topped em with a slice of Daiya Jack style wedge cheese and spicy salsa, didn't even need a bun. Can you say YUUUUUUUUUUMMY!!!! Can't wait for leftovers tonight! ;-} -

I've made these...They are so yummy! The combination of tempeh, black beans, sweet potatoes/yams, oatmeal, plus the other ingredients (I omitted the hot sauce) makes for a hearty, delicious burger. They do freeze well. -
Thanks, Steven -- on a side note, I took a look at your site.
I made a dough from a similar grain mix, and I was thinking, well, gee, if this had been a French Pastry recipe, I would have rolled it, frozen it and reworked it tomorrow. The results were similar, too, although the dough baked, it was very crumbly -- a similar problem.
Good to hear about Trader Joe's: I've been getting their flyers for ages and my old business partner swears by them, but we just got one downtown -- until recently all the chains were out in the 'burbs. -
ok... i think i was misunderstood... ill communication.. :) the question is, is there a difference between "sweet potato" and yams? Is sweet potato, a "variety" vs... garnett yams, or are they essentially the same thing? thnanks Jay -
Oh and I don't have a restaurant favorite. I always make my own veggie burgers at home and I'm famed for my Pinto Bean burgers. ^-^ -

Hope everyone enjoys their BeST Burgers, and thanks for sharing Alicia!
Ernie, the oats definitely add more cohesion to the burgers, and the tempeh provides a more solid ingredient for the burger body. The liquid ingredients can be left out or limited if the burgers don't seem to hold together as well. I've found when refrigerating or freezing (another excellent option!) pre-made patties before frying/baking, the burgers stay together much better.
I understand being yammed OR sweet potato-ed out (by the way, Jay, I usually use Trader Joe's Organic "Sweet Potatoes"), so maybe this recipe will help give you some variety from the yam fries on an off-week! -
I love the tempe burgers at Chili Addiction in Los Angeles, CA. Surpringly, I have never made a veggie burger before. These ones look great! -
No fair reading my mind. My only question is what ingredients make the burgers more cohesive? I made a grain mixture that had the aroma, texture and appearance of a burger, but it fell apart when heated. Also I'm yammed out from hitting the yam fries too often. -

ok soo new rule :) when we say "sweet potato" we need to define, sweet potato, yam, and if it is a yam is a garnett etc.. ? i am so confused by the general use term of sweet potato. I literally was at the store yesterday, and when you go to a place like kroger, with a term like sweet potato tacos, they start scratching their collective heads, because its so foriegn to them. and for me i'm trying to learn and were all like well this one is sweeter, and this one isnt as sweet. but is there a difference? HELP :) -
