The Kind Book Club! There have been so many veg & eco books written recently, and in the past, and I know we're all trying to stay up to date on the best info. I thought a book club would be a great opportunity for us to learn together and have some fun!
We'll feature a book and discuss it in the forum - then I'll publish a post on the homepage with your comments and opinions about the book! This month, I've chosen a book (more on that in a second), but in the future, I want you to choose!
So check out this month's book and write your suggestions for future books in the comments below!
Meat Is For Pussies
By John Joseph
This month, I want to highlight a book called Meat Is For Pussies. At first, I wasn't sure about it from the title - but I couldn't really put it down! It's a very engaging read, and it was written by one of the cute vegans I feature in The Kind Diet, punk rocker John Joseph (p. 88). This is a great book for guys. It's all man energy! Get your boyfriends and husbands to read this, so they can tell us what they think of this manly book!
You can buy Meat is For Pussies here!
Happy reading - don't forget to post your comments and questions in this forum thread as you read!
What books would you like to read next?

My husband got this book for Christmas and I am the one who read it immediately. It is not just laugh-out-loud funny, but seriously informative. I thought it was great. It was the male version of "Skinny Bitch" for sure.

Next book to try, how about, Skinny Bitch.
Heard great reviews about it - how it is blunt and to the point. Anyone else heard good or bad reviews?

I think i might have to get this book for my husband...just to help him get started...he is supporting me in my new lifestyle change and is noticing the difference in my overall attitude and appearance but is still holding back on joining me...i think this book may help thanks for the idea...

Great idea!! I've been looking for some veg/eco books to read and didnt really know where to start until now. :o)

...i didn't read all 97 responses, so maybe someone already suggested this, but i think it would have been a lot cooler (and less offensive to those who are easily offended) to go with P#*SIES in the title..... vs. spelling it out. Then, for those easily offended it becomes "pansies" .... and for the rest of us pervs out there, well.....we know what it is :) Either way, it grabs your attention which is a good thing when selling books :)

kudos to Angie! we're in the same boat. i felt the same way that you did about the way you were living. i'm glad that you're feeling better. hearing stories like yours helps to keep me motivated and focused on the began lifestyle. :)

I dont want to interrupt any discussions I just wanted to say thank you ALICIA you have saved my life. I was on this awful spiral of unhealthy life and now because of your book and my determination from reading it four times I am on a new path. I am on a healthy path. I have been vegan now for 2 months and have lost 10 lbs, i had migranes daily and now I dont, and my face is clearing and I just feel better. I have a long way to go still but I am on my way.

I just ordered Meat Is For Pussies and I can't wait to read it!!! I love the title! I think it will appeal to guys who are afraid to look or sound lame for giving up meat and settling into a vegan lifestyle. I have a friend who refuses to carry reusable bags for fear that he will look like a pussy. I mean, come on, guys! You need to realize that having a healthy lifestyle does not make you a pussy. Have the balls to give up the meat and other toxic lifestyle choices. Being afraid to look like a wuss when it comes to important issues like this is what actually makes you a wuss. Meat IS for pussies! My, I'm opinionated today. I wonder how much I'll have to say when I actually read to book :)

My partner is completely a meat lover...I wonder if I could get him to read this and change his mind even one day a week.

Have any of you thought of environmental law, after hearing of your interest in this book, I immediatly thought of Yale environmental legal societies. Check it out - it will brighten and enhance your interest and day! The perfect place for those who believe in something strongly.
Love all forever!

Yes, yes, yes...the China Study is a MUST-read! It is the book that made me go, "No, thank you, I will pass on the meat and dairy." It is the scientific research behind why you do NOT want to feed your body animal protein. And, the best part...the doctor behind it used to be a scientist for the meat industry, until his research started showing unhealthy findings. He was the curious and courageous scientist who did not simply shrug off the unhealthy findings, he actually researched them more and found that animal protein is correlated to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A dense book, but simply the best scientific book on why to eat vegan. And, there is a new movie coming out "Forks over Knives" this spring that highlights his findings.

So, does anyone else think the title of this book is a little sexist? Really...Meat is for pussies? Hmmm...before I go judging I am willing to read it, but I have to admit I am a little put off by the title. My favorite Mark Bittmann (Mr. recipe guru gone veggie head) is not a big fan either (of the book, that is): http://markbittman.com/bittys-book-review-is-meat-for-pussies.

Thanks for making this book club :) I'm excited to see your reccomendations.
I want this book and 'The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist Vegetarian Critical Theory'. I think they both put an interesting spin on veganism and reasons to give up animal products.
I reccomend 'The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life'. I read that last month and after 3 years of being vegan, I STILL learned a lot. I also loved the profiles of vegan bloggers and beauty section.

Has anybody read the book "Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World ". I have heard of it but don't know if it is worth reading. If anybody has read it I would appreciate any comments or advice on whether to buy it or not. Thanks.

I'm super psyched about this book club. Today is day 3 of being vegan. I feel amazing already. I'm about half way through The Kind Diet book, and I'm looking forward to the next read.

I love, Love, LOVE the idea of a book club!
One of the most interesting, powerful books I ever read is Melanie Joy's Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows.
Even though I was already a vegan, I don't think anything helped me understand "the psychology" of meat eating more than this book. Melanie Joy is a social psychologist and professor at UMAss, and she is one smart lady. I read the book in two days, I could not put it down. I was reading while walking, eating, riding in the car, and every other moment I could.

awsome! I finally bought your book, the kind life, after buying it for a friend of mine as a gift last year, she was interested in going vegetarian, a week after she got it she decided to go Atkins on me. and even posted on her fb her weight loss was due to eating meat, I was so bumbed I spent my hard earned $$ to hear that... can't wait to read more books! oh, the Mad Cowboy is a good read, as well as food for spirt, and food of the gods...

Thank you so much for starting a book club. I am always looking for good books to read that will help me make the transition to being vegan. I will definitely get a few books from your suggestions. Thanks and please keep it up!
