California has become the first state to ban foie gras, the delicacy made from fatty duck or goose liver. As most of you probably know, the process for making foie gras involves grossly overfeeding geese through a funnel so their livers enlarge to such a degree they can't even walk or breathe properly.
Animal rights activists have been fighting for years to ban this cruel practice. I actually worked really hard to get this law passed. I called Schwarzenegger for a month, talking to his trusty team every few days for a few months. I was thrilled when he passed this! The new law, which goes into effect July 1, will ban the sale and production of foie gras in California.

Although California is the first state in the US to enact such a ban, other countries such as Israel, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, already have similar laws in place.
How can we get other states to get on board?

I grew up in the french culture and to refuse foie gras is almost considered an insult, like refusing champagne (a bubbly alcohol!).
What has to be changed is the whole consciousness of a culture. Ancient an proud ones are very hard to shift. I hardly say I'm vegetarian, I say "I avoid meat", because people become so annoying and critic. I think it is just the fear of being put out of balance. Culture can be like religion, so comfortable.
Since yesterday I decided to make my vegan coming out. Kind of a challenge in the country of les escargots au beurre d'ail (even worse than foie gras!). But I'm 46 and I can face the others now... perhaps even my mother:))
Culture shift begins with standing up to our own convinctions even if they are totally contrary to our good old ways. It was time for me!

*happy dance* Foie gras is so disgusting. Very glad to hear it is now illegal. Now hoping that other states get on board. <3 California. -
I couldn't watch the entire video on how Foie Grass is made. It brought me to tears.
You would think it would be just common sense to pass a law to make this illegal ~ sad that it isn't. Hopefully more countries get on board!

THATS WHY I AM VEGAN...2 YEARS BEFORE, I OPENED AN E-MAIL FROM A FRIEND.
THIS E-MAIL SHOWS THE HORROR OF HOW THE FOIE GRASS IS MADE.
I CRIED FOR A WEEK. I STARTED TO MAKE THE CONECTION.

Thank goodness! I don't know if something like that would ever pass in Texas. I wish it would though!

This is so amazing!! I'm so happy. I'll always be proud of having lived in California. I hope other states and other countries will follow its lead!

Alicia, this is wonderful. I forwarded this to Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley. It would be incredible if you could reach out to him, too. Here's a page with all his contact info. http://www.governor.maryland.gov/mail/
Love you, Alicia! You're one of my favorite people in the world.

Off topic here :
I must admit Leecie was right about hot rodding race horses with foreign chemicals. I'll Have Another, the only Triple Crown hopeful this year, has unfortunately been scratched. Tendon issues probably related to the lasix.
So, Dullahan seems to be a fav, but he is drugged:( can't go with that, so number 6 Ravelo's Boy is a drug free long shot that I will be cheering for 1000% in the Belmont stakes race.
Boycott horse drugging and support the bill! Just after the big race:)

This practice just sickens me! Honestly, some of the horrific practices that continue in the treatment of animals for the food industry makes me so mad. At last, at last, at long last this is one that will be eliminated here in California. And, knowing how we set the trends maybe it will catch on for the rest of the country.

Alicia...too awesome, great job! Just looking at it, I mean, who would want to eat that? It's interesting to note that so called 'delicacies' become so merely because something awful has to be done to the animal to produce them (shark fin, veal, etc). How the heck did that happen??

I'm so happy to read this! I've never even tried foie gras because I can't bring myself to eat something that is made by force-feeding another living creature.
We wouldn't stand for a human being force fed so why stand for this type of care for animals??
Well done everybody involved - another few states to go....oh and please don't forget about Canada!!!

Another BIG THANK YOU going out to Alicia for all your great work on this important issue! The bird kingdom is much deservedly in the spotlight these days. It's great to see progress being made in the US for animal rights!
