Olivia Wilde, who is so great (and is in the film Butter with me that we worked on this past spring), reminded me of this wonderful organization - Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties, New York. It is such a great place! If you live in the area, or are visiting New York, check it out! Bring your friends and bring your kids!

Animal sanctuaries are so special. I had my 25th birthday party at one... That was about a hundred years ago!!! Anywho, they are great places to turn people on to the souls of animals, and help them connect with their little child inside. They also open your hearts. If you've never been to one before, I suggest you go and bring someone with you who likes animals, even if they just like cats and dogs. They will love it, and so will you!

That is so great you posted the Catskill sanctuary! Last weekend I visited the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (www.woodstocksanctuary.org)...which was my first time visiting one and LOVED it. I am from the area and had no idea about the one in Saugerties, so thank you so much!!!

I live in the Hudson Valley in New York. There are a bunch of animal sanctuaries in the New York area and I'm hoping to visit one this summer.

Took my nieces and nephew there last summer to see the animals. Their favorites were the ducks (because they had their own pond) and the piggys sleeping in the mud. One of the turkeys was taller then my then 2 yr old niece she was so happy petting him after the initial fright wore off.

My new book, sharing tales of happiness and hope on the Castkill Animal Sanctuary, is now out. You can see more info on it at http://animalcampbook.com.
Also, just wanted to point out, that we often reserve a chartered bus to bring up NYC residents to the farm at least once every season. More info can be found at our website http://casanctuary.org

I want to play with those animals! OMG I wish I could adopt the little piggie. So, so , so very cute!
One of these days I'm going to visit one of the california animal sanctuaries :)

I went to Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary yesterday for my 24th Birthday! Its in Poolesville, MD, outside Washington, DC. It was an incredible experience. A little chicken fell asleep in my hands and a goat named Chelsea would follow us around and snuck into the pigs barn to get more attention from us! Its so beautiful to hear their stories of rescue and healing and know that they have a safe loving home for the rest of their lives.

Catskill Animal Sanctuary is truly a healing place where kindness and love rule. The animals inspired me to go vegan when I turned 40, and to live a more compassionate life. These amazing critters have so much to teach us :)

I became vegan after reading Cathy Stevens book Where The Blind Horse Sings. If you can't visit Catskills Animal Sanctuary, you can learn about by reading this book or by going online and becoming a member to support the animals.

Alicia: thrilled beyond words that you've mentioned Catskill Animal Sanctuary on your blog. Thanks to you and your wonderful pal Olivia! Hope you'll come for a tour and meet the animals who've changed my life. Bring your muck boots! Thanks for the good, good work you do on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.

On Labor Day weekend my husband and I will be visiting Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY for the 3rd time. We love it there and they do such inspiring work, as do all sanctuaries! It is so amazing that animals can learn to love people again after being so mistreated. I wish I were that kind! For anyone in Maryland, there is the Poplar animal sanctuary which is very similar.

Does anybody know of a shelter like that in MN? I want to go to one for my bachelorette party!

I love the piggy photo! I raised a black & white piglet in my kitchen after a hunter killed it's momma. When he got bigger he used to follow my toddler around the yard. He was so smart!

I am so in love with these pictures! What cuties!
I have a pig I sponsor at Farm Sanctuary. I got a thing in the mail just yesterday about setting up a time to see him. I wish I had the money and vacation time to do that but I'm pretty content looking at the picture they sent of him and knowing he's safe and happy at the farm.

This weekend, my husband and I visit the Veganpeace Animal Sanctuary at the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, MA. They don't have a large capacity, but they are doing incredible work. We spent the afternoon with the animals there and it was so inspiring and humbling. I highly recommend visiting if you're ever in Massachusetts.

I live in the Baltimore area. I just googled and found one not far from me, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. They are having their annual Open House and fundraiser Sept. 26th. 1-5pm. Road Trip!

I have been meaning to take my kids to a farm animal sanctuary but the closest one I have been able to find is in the LA area which is a bit of a drive from Oceanside. Anyone know of one in the San Diego area?
