Let's face it, recycling electronics is not as easy as it should be! Finding a recycling center near you that takes old cell phones, computers, televisions, and other used electronics is a bit of a research project. Then you have to get in your car and drop off your stuff; it can take a full day to keep your electronics out of a landfill!
So, I was excited to find (via Girlie Girl Army) that eBay has a great program that makes it super easy to resell your electronics. All you have to do is search for the product you're getting rid of and fill out a quick online form with information about its condition. eBay will then generate a resale price for you. After that, you ship it for free to a buyer. The buyer will evaluate your product to make sure your assessment of it is accurate, then they'll pay you for it via PayPal. If the buyer thinks your item is worth something different than your price, they'll email you a new offer. If you accept it, they'll pay you the agreed upon amount; if you reject it, they'll ship the item back to you, free of charge. Everyone wins!
If you're not interested in selling your old electronics, Earth 911 is great resource for finding corporate recycling programs for computer parts and cell phones. They also have a database where you can find an e-waste recycling center close to you.
Do you know of any similar services for recycling electronics online or near you?

This is so great! I have a few broken electronic items that I just can't bear to throw away but haven't been able to find any place to recycle them. Old speakers that I just can't donate, but that, unfortunately, just need to be recycled. This site looks great :)

This is so timely! We just purged a bunch of old electronics and they've been sitting in the garage waiting to be hauled to a recycling center. I love that you can potentially earn money for your old stuff!

Thank you for this!
My computer is on its last legs and I had no idea what I should do with it. '
Very helpful...

I love this idea!
I am lucky to live in a community that holds electronic drives. A few times a year a HUGE truck pulls up to our local library and collects used electronics. It is always wonderful to see how many people participate.

This is a great idea. So great that I went on it right away to try to recycle some of my electronics I've been needing to get rid of. But unfortunately it doesn't appear that the program works for people in Canada :( Anyone know if they may plan to launch this program to include Canada as well? I figure it's going to take a whole day to make inquiries as to where to appropriately recycle all my broken electronics and appliances, and perhaps another day or more to actually deliver them to the right places!

This sounds like a wonderful idea, especially if you want to make a bit of money out of that 'box' TV that still might work. For our city, we have a company who comes at the curb side to pick up all sorts of broken items, including electronics. We also have a quarterly pick up. Sometimes it depends on where you live - residential areas have one type of service, where condos/townhome areas might have another. Electronics are definitely an item we should recycle. There's just too much we use at every household between TVs, Blueray, VCRs, stereos, and phones!
