A while back I went to a raw food convention in Jamaica. Raw chef Juliano Brotman was giving a lecture, and during this lecture he mentioned the importance of clean, not toxic-nail-painted hands in the kitchen, as we were using our hands for much of the preparing. He also talked about how he likes to nibble on women's hands and feet and how it's gross for them to be wearing polish. I was like "I want my fingers and toes nibbled on!". For some reason, that really stuck with me and I stopped wearing polish after that.
I used to wear nail polish religiously when I was younger"¦ like from ten on. But it's been years since I've worn it regularly. Every once in a while I have a role where it is important for the character to wear polish. And for Time Stands Still, I wore red polish by Zoya everyday, because it made sense for my character Mandy.
Sometimes, very rarely, I just get the urge to wear it too, and I go for the most eco/healthy/friendly polish I can find. Even though I don't often go for polish, I still love a manicure. I usually go once a month, sometimes more if I'm lucky.
It's really important to not cut your cuticles! It has become common practice among manicurists to do this. It's ok if they gently push them back, but your cuticles are there for a reason. They keep dirt and other gross stuff from getting into your nails and causing infection. Cutting them also makes them grow back more quickly and uglier, forcing you to get another manicure sooner. It's just lazy nail work. It looks great that day, sure, but not for long. Have them cut your hang-nails if you want to, but leave the cuticles. I have a strong dislike for hang nails"¦ cause I can't stop picking at them.

When I'm in Los Angeles I like to visit Recess on Beverly. They were the very first green/eco nail salon in LA! Recess was built with green construction and uses all planet-friendly products. It is really cool in there. In New York, I like to go to Sweet Lily Natural Nail Spa in Tribeca.

Also, some nail salons use disposable supplies that you can take with you at the end of your mani/pedi. Just ask them to give you the supplies at the end, instead of throwing them out. And then you can bring them back each week. I do this, and I use mine for ages.
Both of these salons use Zoya vegan polishes. Zoya polishes work just as well as the toxic stuff. I avoid nail polish that contains dibutyl phthalate/DBP (a substance that was banned from most nail polishes in the US in 1996), formaldehyde (a carcinogen), and toluene (a liquid that smells like paint thinner, and can cause neurological harm if inhaled)"¦ not good for you!! These are all toxins that could affect your nervous system, and cause serious health problems. They are known to cause headaches, dizziness, infertility, liver damage, skin irritation, and kidney damage. Toxic nail polish is basically a regular acrylic paint (paint that is made with synthetic materials). It is harmful to the environment, to the consumer and to the workers that produce it. Workers are around all those toxins that go into the polish day in and day out, then we put it on our nails and it seeps into our bodies and then harmful chemicals are used to remove it and it all goes into the Earth. Read more at Suite101 - Toxic Nail Polish: Nail Enamel Ingredients That Harm the Environment and Your Health.
Do you have a favorite green, all natural nail place like Recess or Sweet Lily?
If you want to check toxicity levels of the nail products (or any product) you are currently using, you can visit the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. They've compiled a list of 53,332 products!
Here is a list that I've been compiling of non-toxic polishes and removers. I haven't tried all of these polishes so I don't really have a favorite, but I do like using Zoya, and this polish remover that my part-time roommate (while I was in NY) and supermodel, Lonneke, just introduced me to called Priti. Some Earth-friendly polish removers take a long time to get the polish off, but this one works really well! You just have to be patient and hold the organic cotton swab with the remover on there for like 10-20 seconds"¦ and then take it off. It works great!!

Speaking of Julep, they recently launched a new Julep Maven program, where you get over $40 worth of nail polish and nail polish products for $20 each month, plus free shipping and 20% off all other products. You can also get the first box for $5 with the code INTRO5. It's really a neat program, you take a quiz to create your "nail personality", and they send you new products each month (usually 1 to 3 nail polishes and some other products). You can also skip any month you want.

Hi all just wanted to let anyone that might be interested in info about Zoya know they have been doing a promotion for free shipping till the end of the month. The coupon code is sweep2. Also if you like them on facebook and make an account with them (even if not purchasing at the moment) they will send you coupon promotion codes and let me tell you they do promotions alot! I love Zoya polish and there remover is fantastic and comes in a pump bottle which is also great b/c you don't have to worry about spill. One last bit of info is that if you have an Ulta near you they are now carrying alot of Zoya polishes!

Enjoy Phoebe If you wanna try a few colors I suggest Pandora (great nude), and for fall they have there new mirrors/smoke collection. I personally love Marina and Cynthia.

I recently found a brand of nail polish that I can get locally and not have to order online that is free of toluene, formaldehyde & DBP. It's called Nina Ultra Pro and they carry it at Sally Beauty Supply. It's also much more reasonable that OPI which is what I normally use. I don't polish my nails much, but I HAVE to have polished toes or I feel naked.

Julep Nail Parlour in Seattle! I've been getting my nails done here for about a year now. What a relief to walk in & not have that strong smell that exists in most nail salons! Their polishes are formaldehyde, phthalate & toluene free. They also have an amazing cuticle oil that comes in a roller-ball applicator so you don't get messy applying it & is easy to carry with you. The cuticle oil is all natural (made from natural oils & a few essential oils) with no preservatives! All of their polishes, cuticle oil, etc. are available online at www.myjulep.com. Definitely recommended!

The salon that I work in uses natural, organic, & vegan products when possible. Within the last few months we have started to use a brand call SpaRitual. Their polishes and spa products are eco-friendly, are free of nasty chemicals and best of all vegan. And the colors are beautiful!!! I really respect this brand and I'm happy to be using it on clients.

I am a nail tech and am no longer working....but I have 4 collections of the Zoya polishes and I only use the best, longest lasting nail polishes for myself and my clients! The trick is to have a clean, smooth nail bed...never apply polish after lotioning your hands.
1. Wash hands
2. Smooth nail beds
3. use polish remover to remove any natural oils on nails
4. Apply base coat
5. Apply 2 coats of nail polish
6. Apply top coat for shine
7. Moisturize cuticles with jojoba oil!
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the links to websites where I can check ingredients of products. So helpful! In return, here's a little be-kind-to-your-nails tip I like: olive oil is a great moisturizer for cuticles. Rub a bit in while you're cooking, or grab it out of the pantry when you're giving yoursel an at-home mani/pedi.

Great article! I love Zoya and Priti. I went to an event at Recess but haven't tried their services yet. -
I got my cool colors pretty quick from Zoya. I'll post pics once I don't have chubby preggo feet :) -
just be sure to check all of the ingredients against SafeCosmetics.org - nail polishes can be one of the most toxic beauty products. -
I'm so excited about this! I just signed up for the exchange program Zoya is running for earth day and I'm getting 12 new bottles of vegan polish! What a great deal! Thank you for posting this. As a new vegan I honestly never think about this stuff sometimes, you guys educate me every day. Thank you! :) -
Hi. I just tried Zoya and ordered Sabrina and Bijou. I love the Sabrina color..it's light and almost clear with a light pink undertone. Bijou is more like a hot pink..good for summer. The only negative was the scent..it has that typical "nail polish" smell. Wish that could be avoided. -
Alicia did an interview for my site, My Skin Affair, and shared her favorite skin care products, makeup, favorite spa (We Care in Desert Hot Springs, which has now been reviewed on My Skin Affair) and more. Check out her interview. She also talks about her eco-friendly line of makeup brushes and The Kind Diet. Check out her interview and, if you're into it, you can also check out the review for We Care, Alicia's fave place to detox. It's all on My Skin Affair. www.myskinaffair.com Enjoy! I'd love to hear your thoughts.Peace. -

I've never heard of Zoya. I'll have to try it. I've been using Aquarella nail polish and remover. It's vegan, all natural and water based. It works really well and they have a nice color selection too. -
Another great brand is Arbonne. They are one of the few full skin care and cosmetic lines that are vegan, kosher, gluten-free and endorsed by the Leaping Bunny Society that ensures animals are not testing in their manufacturing process or in any suppliers manufacturing processes. They are also free of carcinogens and toxins that most mainstream cosmetics have. Would love to share some with you guys! Go to arbonne.com and if you are interested, my id code is 18532054. Or if you email me, I'd be more than happy to send you some samples. Love meeting other people that love animals as much as me!!
