There is a great documentary called FLOW that I want to share with you all. FLOW's focus is the world water crisis, and the privatization of the world's water supply.
Not really news to anyone, but the world's water supply is quickly diminishing... and this is scary! This is evident in a number of ways, including when you're told you can only water your lawn during certain times. But beyond that, do you ever think about where your water comes from or how much water you're actually using up? It's always readily available to us. But can you imagine other places in the world where they do not have this luxury?

I highly recommend checking this film out because it's a really fascinating look at the world's water problem. The filmmakers interview scientists and activists who discuss this building crisis, while talking about the main theme of the movie, "Can anyone really own water?". The film shows a lot of people and corporations that are making the situation with water worse... but it also highlights many people and institutions that are trying to provide a solution to the problem as well.
Take a look at the trailer (above). I hope you will all see this film! It is so moving, inspiring, and informative! This is definitely a must see, it's so eye opening. Please spread the word about FLOW!

this is a great film, every friday night the co-op near me has a free showing of film's like these, educate the people ! -
we are very lucky in the UK we have very good water system and we just recycle our water over here aswell which helps but i still do everything i can to keep how much water i use to a minimum because most of the time i just don't need that amount of water. We don't have a proper shower in our bathroom coz the ceiling is too low but we do have the shower leads and things on the taps so i just sit in the bath and wash myself down that way so im not filling up the bath just to have a quick wash. My fiancee and i also share the bath water if one of us has had a bath the other one jumps in afterwards that way we are not wasting water, helping the planet and without sounding selfish but keeping our water bills down everybody wins! -

We just showed this film at Rider University in New Jersey. The showing had a great turnout and after the film the discussion that followed was great! People were actually furious about what was happening and shared some great ideas on how the campus as a whole could do something to bring about change.
As a student myself, it was great to have some insight on what is going on in the world around us, especially when it involves things we take for granted like safe drinking water. -
Wow. This scares me to my core. I wonder what kind of world my Daughter will grow up in. My husband recently installed rain barrels all around our home. I'm so proud of the "footprint" he has created for our family and our world. We also have an organic vegetable and herb garden on our side yard. -
Another way to save water, use your dish water or even bath water to water your garden plants in the summer. I always do this it isnt disgusting as some people have told me! The dish soap in the water actually stops the green/blackflies from attacking your plants. I also save any water I have used to wash my lettuce in and fill up a small indoor watering can and use it to water my indoor plants. -
Thanks Corrina for the tip! :-)
Thank you Alicia for this forum. I never have a question go unanswered. It is AMAZING and a true gift!!! -
@ Kira, I was taught by my old chem instructor that flouride and chloride attach easily to carbon, so a good carbon filter should do
I love the FLOW doco! Another great one is 'The World According to Monsanto' -
WOW! This looks like a very powerful (and scary!) film! I will definitely check it out and will also post this trailer on my Facebook. Thanks for sharing this, Alicia...I think it's something most people don't think about. -
I have to avoide fluoride due to a thyroid condition. I drink bottled spring water only. I make a point of buying 5 gallon water jugs and drinking out of reusuable aluminum bottles. Although the 5 gallon jugs are turned in for recycling, I wish to avoid using plastics altogether. Does anyone know of a filtration device you can connect through your tap water that filters out the fluoride? The ones I have looked at only filter out minerals and metals and chlorine. Any suggestion would be such a help. Thanx! :-) -

Just $1 can provide clean drinking water to a child for 40 days. Here is another quick concerning the crisis:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Brp5_lhf-4&feature=player_embeddedUNICEF raises funds during world water week that specifically targets the increase of access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene programs around the world, known as the Tap Project.http://www.tapproject.org/

Does anyone have some water conservation tips to share? I have a couple, so I'll start :)
1) Ladies, if you shave, try and do it out of the shower, (for example, your bathroom sink. This way you can turn the water on when you need it and off when you don't...and it saves mucho grande on how much water you use!!), or turn the shower off while you shave. This saves gallons of water!
2) Try timing your showers. Some days, you may need a longer bath/shower, especially if this is one of the ways you relax. You might even want to consider taking a quick shower even one day per week! Think how much this might save...
3) When I do the dishes, I wash everything with soap and a wet sponge, and I then rinse everything together.
4) We use a filter on our tap water. (Now I'm anxious to see Flow in order to learn if this is really the best idea?) In any case, if I am not going to finish drinking a glass, I try to use that water for my plants or my dog!
5) if you need to water your lawn, do it when the sun isn't out ;)
I can't wait to hear everyone else's ideas!! :)

http://storyofstuff.org/bottledwater/ is a great video that I recently saw about bottled water... -
I'm a nervous nelly when it comes to water conservation. In the Santa Barbara, CA area, drought has always been a huge issue. Growing up in a water suppressed environment, I've learned to use water sparingly and to plant native plants (drought tolerant). We even took baths together as kids or one after the other with the same water... even in my teen years having a bucket at my feet to catch the unused water instead of it draining away to the ocean. There are so many things we can do to conserve.. it's hazardous to our health not to! -
thanks for the info.
We are mindful in our house to conserve water, I just posted on my blog here http://domesticdharma.blogspot.com/2010/03/water-conservation-and-marley-i-take.html about installing faucet aerators and toilet tank banks in our bathrooms. -
Here in Hawaii, Oahu is one of the only islands that is not in drought. The Big Island of Hawaii, Maui, and a few others are already announced to be in drought as of this month, March 2010. On Oahu our reserves are already being tapped into.
We're having so much fun in our family turning off lights, not running the water for dishes or showers. My husband and son have both taken on the TKL bath and they love it. My husband loves the Hot Scrub. We first learned of it from the Disney Channel's Friends For Change. How cool is that?
and now, I watch the video. Thank you.
