Cafe Gratitude is a San Francisco-based vegan restaurant that recently opened its doors in LA, at the corner of Melrose and Larchmont.
When I was in San Francisco, I tried the chocolate espresso cheesecake - it will blow your mind! Their key lime pie is also amazing. One time I was at my friend Laura's house for a little gathering; they'd had Cafe Gratitude's key lime pies flown in from San Francisco! Now that Cafe Gratitude is in LA, there's no need for that, but that's how good it is. You must try the espresso chocolate cheesecake - it's insane! And the key lime pie too.
I haven't had much of the savory food there, but the macro bowl in San Francisco was the best. The place is always packed and they have the nicest, friendliest staff. Anywho, if you're in LA or SF, I recommend trying it!
Have you discovered any great new restaurants lately?

Not all have closed Norm K. Just some of them. Gracias Madres which is owned by the same people who own Cafe Gratitude is another wonderful Vegan restaurant to try if you are in San Francisco. I love Mexican Food and this place is awesome. Definitely recommend trying the Tacos!

Update....ALL northern California stores have closed!!

I'm sad to report the Cupertino store inside of Whole Foods has closed. While a bit bummed, I'm not surprised. This particular Whole Foods is HUGE...the largest I have ever seen. CG was located in the very back left hand corner. You could know it was in the store, but if you had never been there you would have to ask where it was. I can't complain too much though....at least I have a Whole Foods and a Sprouts nearby. Judging from other Kind Lifers saying how far they have to go for a good grocery store, I'm lucky.

I live in the Chicago area, and am looking for more vegetarian/vegan restaurants, too! I'm up in Evanston, and in our neck of the woods there is a restaurant that we love called "The Blind Faith Cafe". It's vegetarian, not vegan, but there are plenty of vegan options. Plus everyone there is super nice, and its got great atmosphere. I know there are a couple of raw vegan restaurants around (one is about to open a new location), but I can't remember the names off the top of my head, and haven't tried them. Good luck, and let me know if you find any places you love!

When myhusband and I visited San Francisco, I really wanted to stop by Cafe Gratutide. We were driving around in San Rafael, and to my astonishment, drove right in front of it by coincidence! My husband was skeptical while I was thrilled. We stopped in and had a delicious meal - so much that we returned the following day... and bought the cookbook!Absolutely delicious and such a friendly environment.

I haven't been yet (soon, soon!), but I love their beautiful Gratitude Bowl. $7 bowl of veggie goodness or pay what you can. Pay more if you can afford more, paying forward the next bowl, for the next person who might need a few $ toward their meal. I wish that all of the world worked this way. Thankfully, this love intelligence exists in the universe, so it can exist wherever we choose to make it so. Beautiful!

I LOVE the Wild Cow in Nashville, TN. We don't get many Veg-friendly restaurants here in the south, but this one is amazing! They have fantastic daily specials and an amazing selection of vegan desserts! YUM! -
I have been wanting to try it! Have you tried Seed Bistro? I am obsessed. Anyone want to go to this vegan dinner? http://www.letsdo.com/food_events/gourmet-vegan-night

When I was in California for work, I loved this place so much, I ate there 3 times. Twice in Berkley, once in San Francisco. I love the idea of the "grateful bowl". You pay what you think it is worth. So if you can afford more, you pay more and in turn help offset another person's meal. It was so inspiring one day when a homeless woman came in and could only afford to pay .50 cents for her "bowl". I was humbled to know that I was able to help her have a hot meal. This is such a beautiful concept of people helping each other.
I still make my own version of this grateful bowl/macrobiotic bowl for dinner all the time. Brown rice, kale, black-eyed peas or black beans, tahini sauce, tamari almonds and kim chee if you have it. It has transformed what I consider to be comfort food.

yes! I love CG. The nearest one to me is in a Whole Foods Market, but that's okay! I've only ever gotten take-out from them, but I hear the experience in their actual cafés is a lot of fun :)

There are so many good places cropping up for vegan desserts. Babycakes in NYC is going strong (and also having opened in the space formerly occupied by McDonalds in Disneyworld in Orlando.) I'm putting Gratitude on my "to taste list."

Washington DC
The week before last Veg Fest (http://dcvegfest.com/) was hosted at George Washington University in downtown DC. It was fantastic! The best take away for me was from the booth for a little DC gem called Sticky Fingers.

My wife and I stopped in there last weekend for breakfast. It is a quaint little shop decorated with kitch from the 1950's. Frankly, its not really too much to look at. Seating for about 18 and a smallish serving counter.
BUT, the food was outstanding. 100% vegan. I had the french toast and my wife had the Breakfast Burrito. We shared. They were both very nice. The icing on the cake (pun intended) were the cupcakes we took home with us. I swear that you could hand this to any omnivour and they would never suspect that it was vegan. Sooooo good. Moist, perfect sweetness level and rich chocolaty flavor.
When in DC, I recommend a stop at Sticky Fingers...

I was over in San Rafael on Sunday visiting Good Earth in Fairfax; great little market with lots of 'raw' products and organic local produce. I passed Cafe' Gratitude on the way and new I had to stop...so glad I did, it was yummy! Sadly, I was so satisfied and full from my 'I Am Transparent' nori wrap that I didn't get a dessert. Definitely next time!

If every you are in New York City, Blossom on 9th Avenue is absolutely wonderful.
187 Ninth Avenue, NYC 10011 // Phone: 212-627-1144
I don't usually eat out as we are alkalizing Vegans and it is a challenge to find restaraunts that cater for our secific dietary requirements, so I decided I would teach people how to prepare alkalizing food from my own home instead!!! When we do go out on very special occasions, Blossoms is the kind of restaraunt or Thai is easy to keep Vegan.
