Sometimes, the best meals are made up of a bunch of small plates. The Artichoke, Mushroom, and Leek Crostini With Pesto from my book (p. 204) is great anytime and insanely delicious! If you haven't had it yet, it's a must! And the Thin Mushroom Pizzas (p. 220) are always good.
These Crispy Tofu Slices (p. 158) might be nice for the holidays too:
Crispy Tofu Slices With Orange Dipping Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 8oz package savory-flavored baked tofu
- ½ cup corn flour
- ½ cup brown rice flour
- Safflower oil
- 2/3 cup orange juice
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
Steps
- Cut the baked tofu into slices about ¼" thick.
- Mix the flours together in a shallow bowl
- Pour enough oil into a large skillet to cover the bottom of the pan with a thin layer, and heat over medium heat.
- Dip each of the tofu strips into the flour mixture, coating well on all sides
- Place the tofu strips in the skillet, and cook until lightly browned on both sides, about 3 minutes per side
- Transfer the fried tofu strips to a plate lined with paper towels (or a piece of paper grocery bag) to drain
- Stir together the orange juice and syrup in a small bowl. Serve the tofu strips with the dipping sauce alongside
Serve all these hors d'oeuvres together and you have a meal! What are your favorite appetizers?

The artichoke, mushroom and leek crostini's ARE a must - so deicious and great to contribute to non-veg friendly gatherings. I made them for Thanksgiving and am doing it again for Christmas :)

My partner made the tofu for my b-day last summer. The main course was the suffed
shells. YUM!

I made the tofu app last Christmas Eve. :) Maybe I'll do it again.
I once substituted seitan...and didn't like it as much.

Alicia's Artichoke, Mushroom and Leek Crostini with Pesto makes a tasty appetiser:

I'm loving fried tofu these days, and the orange dipping sauce sounds so fresh and light! Theresa- If you're looking for appetizers without soy, I made some non-soy based holiday spreads for a holiday party, including a "chopped liver" and a "pate"- all using fresh, unprocessed ingredients. They were a huge hit!

I bet you could use seitan instead of the tofu in the recipe above:)
You could make hummus and serve it with veggies and pita bread for a soy free appy.
A really easy and yummy dip I have made in the past is taking 1 avocado, 1 cup of salsa, and 1 cup of cooked black beans and blending them all together in a food processor, or you could do it by hand for a chunkier dip. It is so good! :)
I make a spinach and artichoke dip using the Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese and Sour Supreme, so that's a good one. Stuffed mushroom caps are good too... mmmm... yum:)

I have found that soy gives me acne breakouts. Any appetizer suggestions that dont involve a bunch of soy??
