You already know I'm not a fan of factory-farming McDonald's -well it turns out, I'm not alone.
The fast food mega-chain recently asked customers to tweet their favorite McDonald's stories using the hashtag #McDStories and the campaign backfired in a big way. there were no happy memories in sight- instead, people tweeted their worst horror stories! Here are some examples:

After about an hour, McDonald's pulled the plug on the Twitter campaign, because their feed was flooded with negative hype.
This is kind of amazing -so many people eat there and seem to accept this establishment as normal, so to have this happen is a huge win!
What do you think this means? How can so many people eat there daily if there is so much negative feedback; do you think times are a-changin?

There is a video circulating regarding how fast food chicken nuggets are made....it is called chicken paste which is disgusting and looks disgusting in pink. You can google it if you dare to look at it but also to be well informed. The chicken paste is also incorporated into a variety of other meats. Think the fast food chicken burgers are the same. Show the photo and or film to family and friends (especially the kids) and think they may be cured of their addiction and sales would go down.

This is great, so funny to hear that it backfired. On the "Super Size Me" DVD we rented, there was a long interview with the director, I think, as part of the special features, and for me that interview was a much bigger eye opener than the movie itself. Really when you think about it, McDonalds basically "brainwashes" consumers (and kids, to make them customers for life.....i.e., Ronald McDonald, which is kind of sick when you start thinking of it that way) into thinking that this crap is actually food, and then people get "addicted" to it. Same with a lot of big business advertising. I felt pretty duped when I started to understand that advertisers were influencing my choices so much, and in the food business McD's is one of the worst. Going veg and cutting my fast food intake to almost zero was one of the best things I could have ever done!

I think this is certainly evidence of a big shift that is happening and big shifts yet to come; however, there is still a huge problem. Though changing our diet, health, and lifestyle so that we can live experientially and be a walking example of what we are talking about, we must become active in making this sort of thing accessible to the public in the form of both knowledge and food. If anyone has watched Food Inc., read Fast Food Nation, or a combo of both/other similar works, it's obvious that McDonald's is a staple for many as they cannot afford anything better both with their time or their money. How are we helping educate them? More importantly, how can we make a kinder diet more accessible to them? It's great to be the philosopher, observing changes such as this one all day, but we must take the next step at this pivotal moment and begin springing into action.

I couldn't have said it better than kind lifer, Janet Vandenabeele!
It's true! I get condescending questions everyday on why I'm veggie! I work for Tijuana Flats Burrito Co. and everytime I order my veggie black bean burrito without cheese or sour cream, atleast one of the cooks makes a comment about "how Im going to die", if I remain veggie. I don't even bring the fact that I'm vegetarian up, and they still poke fun at me! And like I would take health advice from the cook who smokes, dips, and takes steroids on a regular basis and flaunts it. Sometimes no matter how nice you are and just smile and say nicely, that "my diet is actually very healthy, and i get all the nutrients I need", they will still attack you. I should be the one making comments to them, about how they are ruining my planet and promoting cruelty to innocent animals by consuming meat! But that definitley won't get me anywhere, so I have learned to just ignore the ignorant ones who bash me for doing what I truly believe is the best for my health and the environment!

I raised my two girls on really healthy, whole food. When they entered grade school, though, they came into contact with the whole fast food crowd. Sometimes, a friend's parent would take them. Soon, they started asking for the kids' meals. I told them that I would take them up to once a month if they could tell me, honestly, that the food tasted good. They looked at me as if they hadn't even thought about the taste. It was just cool to eat there. With disgust, I brought them to McDonalds and got them a kids meal. I sat with them as they ate it and asked how it tasted. They both said the same thing...it was was gross. They never asked again to be taken to McDonalds, Burger King, etc.
If you let them decided for themselves, kids can make some very good decisions. Of course, if they had liked the taste...I knew they wouldn't. :-)

I loved your passionate post, Kelsey! I feel the same way. McDonalds is absolutely disgusting.

I used to work at McDonalds when I was in highschool, and I can tell you some horror stories. Someone once returned a salad because it had a dirty latex glove buried in the lettuce. I saw managers go from handling money to handling food without changing their own gloves. I've seen stuff hit the floor and still be served. I was once yelled at by a manager for trying to dump out four hour old coffee that was apparently "still perfectly fine". Places like McDonalds are managed by undereducated people and employed by mostly high school students who are too afraid (like I was) to say anything about the disgusting practices that went on there. I often said that McDonalds was my motivation to graduate college, so I wouldn't be stuck working there forever. Even though I would still eat the fries from time to time, I swore off buying anything from McDonald's after I read about the horrific things they do to egg laying hens, as well as the rest of the poor animals who died for the golden arches. I refuse to be an advertisement for them by carrying around even a Mcdonald's cup. Fuck McDonalds.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that many people have become so estranged from their food source that they don't know that eating is supposed to be a delicious, nourishing, safe, beautiful, natural experience. Colorful, vibrant, alive.
In today's modern world, eating amounts to gut-fill which contains as few calories as possible (how does that fuel someone???) and as much entertainment (i.e. stimulation) as possible. Doesn't matter what it actually IS or who prepared it...

This is awesome! It's very encouraging to see people voicing their opinions and it having such an immediate effect. -
Unfortunately, this just tells me that FAR too many people are willing to accept things like toenails in their food. Really? That's just accepted as normal? As ok? As something that just happens? I'm sorry, but that's just not ok.
Since becoming vegan, I have not only begun to feel better about myself and my mealtime choices, but about the way my food is handled before it gets to my plate - whether it's the transition from my own garden or that from farm to grocery store to me. I know the way a lot of my food is "processed" (in quotations because the vast majority of it isn't really processed) isn't ideal, but I also take comfort in knowing it's definitely better than the processing of the crap that passes for food in places like McDonald's.
Now, those posts about how people went veg after getting sick off McDonald's... Things like that are heartening. Hopefully others read those posts and get the same idea. McDonald's is bad news for EVERYONE involved.

@Cabbage1979, there is beef-derived flavor in their fries which makes them not vegan. In fact I don't think anything in there is. Buying anythign from McDonald's is paying for their cruelty, especially eggs. :(

Lately, I've been having a serious issue with their "Happy Farmer" commercials. Let's be real, all those commercials are completely false advertising. They show images of a few cows happily roaming in a field, when we all know that's not how it really is. It almost disgusts me that they can lie that blantanly in advertisements.

The core of the problem, which goes beyond McDonald's, is that the vast majority of people are not conscious eaters. They shove garbage in their faces and mock others who make the conscious effort to eat Real Food, or vegetarian food, or planet or animal-friendly food. They think the minute someone tries to eat healthy, they are a "fanatic," not realizing that we are the ones seeking balance in our lives.
And if you're vegan and out of the pantry about it? They think it's perfectly fine to insult you and tell YOU you're eating unhealthy! People who shove 40g of fat in their face without thinking suddenly become nutritionists, interrogating YOU about your protein and B12. Really? Really?
Fortunately, I think it's changing, and the bacon-and-butter trolls are just the last gasp of resistance to the obvious. Good on people for fighting McDonald's and other Big Food purveyors of death and disease!

People taking a stand against a cruel corporation like McDonald's? I'm Lovin It!!
This just shows you that We, The People still have the power to change things through our words or boycott. It IS sad that there are still SO MANY people flocking to McDonald's every day but that's why we can help. Let people know. Spread the word. Knowledge is infectious. Our words and actions are powerful. Here's a fun little tidbit my friend posted on Facebook this morning. Very timely. Warning: this is utterly disgusting and may make you want to hurl or cry...or both.

This goes to show that not all 'press' is good for a company, especially when it's negative! I think people will still go to McDs if you've never had a bad experience. Hate to say it this way but there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who have McDs in this country...and beyond! And these may be just a few of the incidents. I will say, at least they HAVE made an effort to offer other alternatives to burger, fries, and a coke!
-
I have been vegetarian for almost 3yrs now....I WILL NOT EAT ANOTHER MCDS BURGER OR ANYTHING FROM THEM EVER AGAIN....I REALLY DON'T EAT ANYTHING FROM ANY FAST FOOD PLACE... it was a decision i made a long time ago and i love that i made that decision...
-
@Cabbage1979 sorry to disappoint but McD is infamous for "recycling" all meat by-products in nearly all their"food"...that includes fries which have beef-derived flavour enhancers.
great post! but it's sad to know that so many people haven't seen Food Inc or Supersize Me or who are still addicted to McD. All McDs near where I live are always full...
apparently, there is a town in the US where people are trying to keep McD out. but battling against this kind of money-and-disease-making monster is really tough...it was on the news recently and the ones in favour of McD there looked..well, they looked mcd'd

My daughter, then 12, and I boycotted McDonalds 5 years ago. She watched "Supersize Me" and made a conscious effort to not eat there. Now, I took it further. I don't eat fast food at all. In fact, as a vegan in NW Arkansas, there are only 2 restaurants that cater directly to vegans. So, my choices are quite limited. On a good note, it keeps my weight in check! This is not to say that I can't find something to eat if I go out with friends, for work, etc. But, it is challenging and I honestly don't mind.

I still have a perfectly good (although dried out) hamburger and bun I bought at McD's in January 2008!! I bought it for my kid's science experiment - it was intentionally left in the rear of our minivan - for 3 months. It never smelled bad, it never turned green - nothing...it just dried out. In fact it still smells fresh. We keep in in a drawer in the kitchen to freak out our non-veg friends!
-
Hahaha! Things like this make me feel like, amidst how much still needs to be done for the world to be a better place, perhaps progress is being made and little by little people are starting to wake up.

I thought this was hilarious! They were obviously trying to force a positive "trending" but it completely backfired. I'm hoping that this means that people's attitudes are changing and that the general knowledge about what is and what isn't healthy is getting cleared up!

Oh McDonalds. Funny though, regarding their disgusting ammonium hydroxide to make the pink slime, they just announced they're stopping it (and doing what instead, who knows)..
