kind chocolate cake!

Feb 24, 2012 at 6:00am by Alicia Silverstone

6775903384:Yahoo:photoPin It

About a year ago I sat down at Flore Vegan in Silver Lake with my girlfriend Marina and shared a slice of their chocolate cake. It was so pretty and yum just a decadent moment.

When it comes to vegan chocolate cake in LA, there are lots of options. Some people love M Cafe's version, others love the one at Real Food Daily...but if you live near Silver Lake and need a chocolate cake fix, run to Flore Vegan.

Who makes your favorite chocolate cake?

Hi LisieLou, your cake recipe sounds great and healthy. I'd recommend date sugar which I've read is the healthiest sugar since it's just ground up whole dates and works great instead of brown sugar.

      http://www.amazon.com/Foods-Date-Sugar-Ounce-Bags/dp/B001EQ5I9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342811661&sr=8-1&keywords=date+sugar

I found coconut sugar is delicious and makes a great substitute in baking as it can be used cup for cup in place of sugar. I wonder if molasses and coconut sugar would work as a substitute for the brown sugar.

I haven't yet tasted a great vegan chocolate cake in Toronto yet... I'm sure that will change once the best Raw Vegan chef Doug McNish releases his new cookbook here in Canada!

One more response for Dan: I've been looking for this link since yesterday after I read your post which included this quote from you "Refined oils from plants and especially from coconut are damaging to a human vascular system even in moderation." You might find some interesting information in regards to coconut oil here: http://www.cbn.com/media/player/index.aspx?s=%2Fmp4%2FLJO190v1_WS Also, you will find tons of great recipes with little or no oil at this link: http://fatfreevegan.com/ I have tried a number of the recipes on this site and they are always wonderful. :))

Anna, I am new to this as well, as well as this forum. I haven't worked out the sugar issue yet. This recipe is Vegan, but does have some sugar in it. I'm not big on artificial sweeteners, so I don't know how to sub in for that! If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to improve on this recipe.

(shocker... I actually got this from the Big Y supermarket)

      Vegan Chocolate Cake

      1.5 c cake flour

      1/2 c granulated sugar

      1/4 c lt. brown sugar

      1/4 c unsweetened cocoa powder

      1 tsp baking soda

      1/2 tsp salt

      1/2 tsp espresso powder

1/3 c ripened Haas avocado, pureed

      1 tsp vanilla extract

      1 tsp apple cider vinegar

      1 c almond milk

      non-stick spray

      ICING

      1/2 c unsweetened cocoa powder

      1.5 TBSP confectioner's sugar

2 ripe avocados, peeled, seeded, and diced

      1/2 c agave syrup

      1/2 tsp vanilla extract

      DIRECTIONS:

      to follow!

LisieLou, I would love if you posted the recipe for your vegan choc cake. I'm still experimenting with this vegan lifestyle and it would be great to get some ideas and recipes for especially cakes and such, bc of my terrible sweet tooth.

@ Dan Westford - check out the Happy Herbivore blog. The recipes are oil free and there is very little refined sugar (I usually sub out palm sugar for brown or raw sugar, but many of the recipes are sugar free as well).

      http://www.happyherbivore.com/

I'm trying to avoid oil since watching Forks Over Knives and refined sugar since reading The Kind Diet. Happy Herbivore has really helped me. I hope the website helps you too!

Personally, I wouldn't mind more oil free recipes in Alicia's next cookbook. I still love The Kind Diet though - the book changed my life :)

Sarah - Happy Herbivore's baked goods are amazing! I actually just finished making a batch of HH low fat chocolate chip cookies (I substituted carob chips, just for fun). I make her treats 99% of the time, but every now and then I will have a more indulgent treat for special occasions :)

I had Flore Vegan's chocolate strawberry cake as my birthday cake last year and I think it's going to become my birthday tradition. It's hands down the best cake I've ever had.

After searching the site, I've found many very healthy recipes which I will try with only minor tweaks. I have several books by Alicia and find her to be a brilliant and inspiring writer with excellent insights. That's one reason I'm dismayed by the desert recipe section of this site encouraging consumption of excess sugar and fats.

Let's be honest about some of these deserts. They are so delicious they may kill some of us over time by triggering a taste for sugar and fats. Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. David Kessler (former head of the FDA) state that oils and sugar are addictive substances (in a clinical sense).

You should get the book Dan, the best & healthiest recipes are in there in the "superhero" section. They certainly aren't as glamorous but they are tasty-- i love the Nori wraps, the 'cure-all' soup, & cuban sweet potatos. If you would like to share healthy recipes that are more 'superhero', that would be great!

"Also, have you looked at the recipes on this blog?"

This is a good point! I'm following links sent to me and it seems like those links are all chocolate, fat, sugar, oil, or other "junk food" vegan items. Is Alicia intending to hook people with SAD lifestyles? Refined oils from plants and especially from coconut are damaging to a human vascular system even in moderation. (Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. and others declare that "Moderation Kills.")

My hunch is that reformed food addicts, like myself, should just not click on links to this site sent to us via email. Instead, I'll try to find healthy recipes within the site. I'll let you know what I discover.

Seriously, so vegans should not enjoy a decadent desert once in a while? It is absurd if this is the mentality people are to live by. I am not even close to being a vegan but my copy of The Kind Diet is one of best cookbooks I have ever owned. Once in a while, a treat like the chocolate cake is completely fine. Also the serving size comment was completely unnecesary. If weight loss is the goal steer clear sugar and revamp on whole foods otherwise moderation is completely acceptable. Anyways, I will be making the coffee fudge brownies this Sunday. Super excited! Thanks, Alicia.

Dan, regarding your comment about the "super size" portion of cake...did you also read that Alicia shared with a friend? Also, have you looked at the recipes on this blog? Sure, there are desserts, but there are also salads, soups, veggies, breads, grains with healthy ingredients like kale, squash and quinoa. The way I see it, Alicia is opening eyes and hearts to a new way of eating & living that is more compassionate. Let's face it, the first thing most people say when you say "I'm a vegan" is "what do you EAT?" Alicia is showing that being a vegan isn't just about eating salad and rice (I've spoken with many people who think this is the case). She's showing the possibilities. Sure, it's important to eliminate processed foods, limit sugar, salt and fat and increase fiber, fruit, veggies, healthy fats, etc. As a long-time vegetarian and vegan I eat zero processed food (this includes no tofu or soy products) and I no longer eat sugar, but that took awhile for me to get to. So, when these recipes or posts come up I just know they are not for me. I make a choice based on my experiences. It's like anything...when you TELL people what they SHOULD do there will be resistance....but if you SHOW people OPTIONS and POSSIBILITIES, they might just try something new and start on the road to a healthier, more vital, more compassionate life style. Much love and respect to ALL. And, thank you to Alicia for her passion and her beautiful heart. <3

I would not say it's "kind" food but here every chocolate-related desserts served at the St-Hubert rotisseries are absolutely decadent, their chocolate-mousse cake is completely insane... Of course personnally since I don't have any health problems like cholesterol or diabetes and I like very much food who taste great without troubles, eating in vegan restaurants in a good way to help "swallowing the pill"... I said I would do it, it's just that reading your book didn't help much to convince me...

Thanks for the serious response to my serious concern. I'll try to respond to discussions about food like substances ("treats") with more humility. That being said, I'd like to see more recipes that would be approved by health and nutrition researchers such as Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. and Dr. Neal Barnard. The web site seems to focus on these special treat deserts and very few nutritious recipes without excess salt, sugar, oils, and other processed ingredients.

Someone needs to speak up for healthy eating when it's out of balance. I'd like to do it respectfully and without rancor.
