kind classics: beware of plastic water bottles!

Sep 29, 2011 at 6:00am by Alicia Silverstone

Here's another one from the archives...enjoy!

wRDF2oMQUZHQgFMWcyZ5zsEm.jpeg:Amazon:photo

A new study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that of the ten most popular brands of bottled water, all but one (Nestle's Pure Life Purified Water) fail to provide answers to the three most important questions you should ask before drinking water:

1. Where does water come from?

2. Is it purified? How?

3. Have tests found any contaminants?

Furthermore, these bottled water companies are breaking the law. In 2007, California passed a law (SB 220) requiring that water bottle labels list the source of the water and two ways for consumers to contact the company to obtain a quality report. EWG found that only 24% of water bottle companies are in compliance with this law. Companies hiding data about their bottled water include Aquafina, Gerber Graduates Lil' Water, Naya, Bristol Farms, Archer Farms, Volvic, Alhambra, Trader Joe's Pure New Zealand Artesian Water, Fiji, and many more (see full list here).

So where does EWG think bottled water actually comes from? Tap water.

Cities are required to provide all of this information about tap water to consumers, and you can find answers to all of your questions about your local tap water here. By opting out of bottled water and drinking filtered tap water, you will know exactly what you are drinking. On top of that, you will be helping the environment, instead of contributing to plastic waste, much of which ends up in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Every blue moon, if you're stranded without a reusable water bottle, it's okay to buy bottled water. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I have my little glass bottle with me (pictured above), that I refill at home everyday. The other one percent of the time, I have to opt for water in a plastic bottle. I usually try to stubbornly refuse water if it's in plastic - even when I'm super thirsty. But I'm just saying, sometimes you can't - so don't beat yourself up if you're in a situation where the only water available is bottled water. Just take your reusable bottle with you everyday, and do the best you can. Don't give up if you mess up - just try again! You can read more about bottled water in my book (page 134).

I'll be posting a series of blogs on water filtration soon, so stay tuned.

How do you stay hydrated at home and on the go?

BPA's are not just in plastic bottles, anything in an aluminum can has a plastic liner that leaches BPA's and other toxic chemicals. That includes beer cans, soft drink cans, canned veggies or any canned foods. Also just because it is labeled BPA free does not mean it is safe. All plastics leach toxic chemicals. Get rid of all plastic plates, cups, bowls etc. Replace them with glass, ceramic or stainless steel.

I found a great product, thanks to Sophia Bush, called th water bobble. It's a water bottle with a filter in the mouth piece. They are certified BPA-free, Phthalate- and PVC-free, and made from recycled PET. They are also recyclable should you ever tire of them. This way you have clean, drinkable water evyerwhere you go, without the burden plastic bottles put on us and our Earth.

It is really hard now knowing exactly what is good for us or what is bad. This was a good article that made me think about what I drink from now on. We want to be safe and help the environment, so it is sometimes a difficult choice.

I haven't tried this myself, but my neighbors have installed it and love it. They installed it themselves too, didn'sound too difficult. It being from Shaklee you know its safe tested and tested again, and 100 percent guaranteed!

Ok so what is the best home water filter system that we can get that is cost effective and also able to easily be moved to my next house without crazy installation issues? I currently use a pitcher, but I would like something that I can use for cooking and other home tasks as well.

i am so happy that i finally bought a water filter! it totally intimidated me at first, so that's why i kept putting it off! but carrying those big cases of water from SAMs Club was simply taxing and i dreaded it, and i just knew that something fishy was going on with the bottled water industry! oh! and, the recycling men are probably very happy to carry away no more plastic! :) thank you so much for this article. http://www.nicoleandgwendolyn.com

Thanks to this story, when you had it up the first time, lots more people have realized that filtration quality and container materials matter more than ever! It is so important to do your research, and its great to get som help from a site like yours! I have the Shaklee waterfiltration pitcher, it works better, and is greener than any of the other commercialy available ones. It even filters our lead! http://sunnyside.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=89099

Here's the water bottle I use. I'm a big klutz, so I figured the "unbreakable" glass would be the way to go for when I drop it. Because I definitely will drop it sooner or later. I wish I had gotten two though, because sometimes I end up being bad and buying water when my bottle needs to be cleaned and feel super guilty :(

I also really love this water bottle sling from Chico Bag (probably the only reason by water bottle hasn't been dropped yet.

Very interesting! And, based on real science. Everyone should be familiar with pubmed, and believe peer reviewed studies not just newspaper/internet crap.

Lots of studies on BPA/water bottles on pubmed.

I use a camelbak 0.75L, BPA free. Cost me 25 euro [32 ish dollars??]. Worth every cent. Also, my water intake has tripled since getting it [so easy to drink from and keeps water cold].

Question: What exactly do you refill your water bottles with?? Tap water? Filtered water?????

PS There is no credible evidence in standard medical or scientific literature to support claims that alkaline "kangen" water is better for your health than drinking regular water

Thanks for the advice! I also checked out the site Kendle recommended, www.greenvirginproducts.com, and I'm excited to try out the all-natural laundry detergent substitute that is supposed to be cheaper and equally good if not better.

Oh, and in reference to Beata's comment on the alkaline water, I try to stay to stay alkaline as well and I find that just adding pure lemon juice to my regular filtered water does the trick.

      Dan, so true!

Phthalytes are in so many products (lotions, perfume, anything plastic, etc), it is KNOWN to be a hormone disruptor and so there are restrictions on it in children's products. However, there aren't restrictions on it in products targeted to adults. Add to the fact that "safe" levels are just guesses. And industry lobbyists have sucessfully delayed enforcement of related restrictions and testing requirements!

Thanks Kendle for the heads up. I have heard some things about Sigg too, from the pro side and con side. I don't use it often as I have pretty easy access to water wherever I am in the city. But I have it just in case.

I don't like stainless steel bottles as I can taste the metal. I have the same problems with spoons and forks! That's why I use chopsticks. Weird I know.

Probably will switch to glass if I find a really good one. I don't like to buy new things unless I really need it and think it will last a long time though.

Corporations use government standards as an excuse to promote products that their own scientists recognize as dangerous. The struggle against addictions to tobacco is being waged, but alcohol, and excess oils, fats, salt, additives, and sugars in our processed foods pose great risks to human health. The lack of standards based on science extend to our water supply as well.

For example, there is no scientific basis for the "safe" fluoride level of 2 parts per million that is the typical standard used in many municipal water supplies used in many bottled waters. This water often contains 2 PPM floride, but no one can say for sure that this is a safe level. Chlorine used in water treatment poses another risk. Plastics used in containers are also known to cause serious health issues in laboratory animals. An immediate ban is being blocked by government leadership that is more concerned about political repercussions than protection of the citizens.

My choice is to always use glass containers for food and liquid storage. I use Perrier water bottles for water and canning jars for food. I fill bottles each week with water from a deep mountain well and use this for cooking and drinking.

Beware of Sigg Aluminum bottles. Sigg was caught red handed for lying to consumers about the plastic liner in their aluminum bottles. They knew they were leaching bpa's for over 2 years and yet continued to claim they were bpa free. They have since reformulated the plastic lining and claim it is now bpa free but they wont disclose what the lining is made of. (you can trust us, wink wink) Aluminum is toxic so a plastic liner is sprayed into their bottles. Stainless steel is not toxic and no liner is used. Avoid aluminum as much as plastic.

I second that request by Meg! However, I thought I had heard about Fiji water (the company) having to find other sources?..This at least a year ago so maybe they resumed pumping afterwards?

Have you guys watched the documentary, Water Wars? So eye-opening. I avoid all the big beverage companies like the plague now. I know we are all trying to be kind to animals, but let us also be kind to people living in places where big beverage companies are exporting local water and charging residents for this basic need!

Ok, done with that slightly off topic ramble!

I usually have access to water fountains (Vancouver's downtown area is great for that) or I use my trusty Sigg water bottle. I do use a Camelbak when hiking/cycling though. I don't drink water from the pak if it's gotten warm or has been in there for more than a couple hours though to avoid leeching.

Al plastic leaches chemicals even the ones labeled bpa free. Bpa's lead to reproductive problems. Glass or 304 stainless steel bottles are the way to go. Do not buy a stainless steel bottle unless it says 304 stainless steel as there are different grades of stainless steel and the cheap grades have a metalic aftertaste. Here is a site that sells 304 stainless steel bottles made in the same factory as Kleen Kanteen bottles at less than half the price including a lifetime replacement. Go to www.greenvirginproducts.com I own 1 of the Kleen Kanteens and 4 of the Green Virgin bottles and my kids all want the Green Virgin bottles because of the cool logo.
