kind classics: natural hair styling products

Feb 23, 2012 at 12:00pm by Alicia Silverstone

Good hair products are always hard to come by... and once you find ones that you love it's very comforting. Scott, a hairdresser that has worked with me a lot in the past, has recommended some great products. He was also kind enough to answer some other questions for me, which are at the end of this blog.

I just love Scott! He is such a great hair artist, and I feel so safe with him knowing that he only uses the best, kind products. He also has amazing hair; and he's vegan! Take a look at what Scott recommends:

Giovanni was started by Arthur Giovanni, a Beverly Hills salon owner. Giovanni makes a full line of cruelty-free, organic and vegan products, and you can find them at Whole Foods. Everything from shampoos and conditioners, to styling and finisher products you can find HERE. I've been using a couple Giovanni products since I started my play, and they are great. One of the products, Vitapro Fusion, protects my ends from hairdryer heat, and the other is Shine of the Times Finishing Mist for calming down frizz, and smoothing funny fly-aways.

MOP (Modern Organic Products) makes Scott's favorites, the C-System. All organic and food-based ingredients, these products can be found in tons of salons and beauty supply stores. Use their locator to find a store near you.

Aveda makes tons and tons of products for every type of hair and hair need, it just depends on what you need. Their products aren't always vegan, but Aveda avoids chemicals when they can, and most of their products are derived from natural ingredients. My favorite Aveda product for my hair is the Volumizing Tonic. After I shower at night, I sleep on my damp, washed hair that I wrap into a loose bun. Then, in the morning, I spray a little of this on my hair if I'm going somewhere spunky, and my hair gets that tosselled and textured look.

Scott recommends some other products in this little interview that I did with him, and also talks about why he decided to go vegan:

What products do you use and why? What are your considerations when choosing products?

I use a variety of products depending upon my clients' needs, however I always try to use the conscientious choice as there is really no reason not to. Many of the larger companies have come a long way and adhere to cruelty-free practices and, in many cases, vegan or vegetarian ingredients. It just takes a little diligence to read the packaging and make the smart decision.

Bumble & Bumble makes a full line of cruelty-free products which are fantastic and with a few exceptions, mostly beeswax, they are vegan as well. The same goes for Aveda, but I have to admit that the fragrances are a little overwhelming sometimes. Giovanni and Jason, both carried at Whole Foods, are also terrific, but as with Aveda and other "natural" products, these have a more limited shelf life and last longer if refrigerated.

I also tend toward a natural alternative whenever possible. Pure shea butter makes a spectacular pomade. I use it for piece-y looks and to smooth frizziness. A little goes a long way. Pure aloe vera gel makes a great hair gel and when mixed with rosewater makes a great spray-on blow dry product. Adds thickness and shine with no alcohol! Also, glycerine and rosewater can take the place of serums to calm naturally curly hair and reduce frizz.

Why did you decide to go vegan?

I was raised in a very meat-friendly household, with more than one choice of meat for every meal. As soon as I left home as a teenager I became vegetarian, and have just naturally evolved into a vegan lifestyle from there. I was never a fan of my many meat options and have always been a lover of all animals, so it just seemed like the right trajectory for me. It certainly was a philosophical decision first and a health benefit by coincidence. I have now been vegetarian/vegan for over 40 years and have certainly reaped the long-term benefits in my health, weight control, skin, etc...I try not to be preach-y about it and always felt that did more harm than good. I try only to live by example and work to educate my friends, co-workers and clients gently and with love.

Hope this was helpful to you guys! I'd love to know what hair products you use. And if you try any of the products that Scott recommended, let me know how you like them in the comments below!

I have been a vegan now for 11 months and damn proud! :} The only hard thing about it was finding vegan friendly personall products especially for my long, wild and wavy hair that tends to get quiet dry and frizzy. For those in Australia I stumbled upon a brand Natures Organics which are completely vegan and produce Shamppo and Conditioners as well as hand soaps, body wasy, skin care, body lotions, household cleaning products from laundry, kitchen and bathroom.

http://www.naturesorganics.com.au/ They are a great company which use responisible sourcing of palm oil and as far as I am aware it is something they look to move from completely in the future. My sister and I still use their household products however have moved on to a new company called Arbonne.

http://www.arbonne.com/international.asp They are a swiss brand but they are based in Australia, America, Canada and the UK. They are completely Vegan and FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council). I fell in love with their products when a lady I knew told me she was a consultant for them and introduced me to their great range. In an instant the Shampoo and Conditioner gave life and shine back into my hair and although I was already blessed with quite youthful skin, it now feels smoother then a babys bottom even more :P

I also use pure organic Argon Oil that I found at a stall in a market place. I rub some together in the palms of my hands through my towel dried hair and really work it through.

There was a thing about Aveda in the Organic Consumers Association a year or two ago... apparently they are not as pure as they appear to be and use some chemicals that are considered carcinogenic. I'm not a big hair products person-- I used to use aloe vera gel instead of hair gel. At the moment I don't use any styling products. You can make your own salt-water spray for your hair though to help out curls-- may give this a try in the summer. As for shampoo, not that into brands-- I just buy the cleanest greenest I can find. At the moment using one from Aubrey Organics. Before that I tried Faith in Nature.

I will have to look into a few of these as I love to switch up my products so my hair does not get used to a certain one and keep my hair healthier. I normally use Maui and Burt's Bees on my family, but always love to find something new.

How would I go about sending samples to Alicia and/or Scott? I am the founder of Greenbody Greenplanet Hair Care and would like to have them experience truly toxin free hair care. Many of the products listed in this post are full of chemicals, toxins and yes, Aveda is now being tested on animals. Please let me know how I can submit!!

      Thanks

oh and also I once learned (I think while at Cosmetology school..?) that just because a company says "we do not test on animals" does NOT mean the products were not tested on animals. The company has to say "NEVER tested on animals". Because I guess legally if you hire out a research company and they test on animals but your particular company does not do the testing, it is still legal to say "WE do not test on animals" when in fact the product was tested on animals somewhere in China or something. So just be extra cautious if this is something that is important to you.

Also while you, or anyone else, is at it look at Lauders corporate page to see ALL of the companies that Lauder owns. Clinque, Smashbox,MAC,American Beauty,Flirt,Tom Ford fragrances and cosmetics,Origins,Coach fragrances, Jo Malone fragrances and so on and so forth.

I have been lucky enough to have found a wonderful product line by my salon here in Western NY at Pharaoh's Hairum who is also a member of the The National Association of Eco-Friendly Salons & Spas! They recently installed a custom-made ventilation system at their Fairport location!! Fresher and Healthier air quality at Pharaoh's Hairum!!! I love the Innersense Line and have been using it since being back in NY from LA, and will make sure it is part of my daily regime. It not only is great for my hair, looks great, feels great, and smells great...but the scents are very uplifting. I LOVE this product. If you can't tell! :D

      http://www.pharaohshairum.com/

IF you google them you can find an article that mentions how they have recently gone all organic from shampoos & conditioners, to hair color to keeping their environment clean. The products they use and have gotten me THRILLED is called Inner Sense. I think I saw they are available at (most) Whole Foods as well as online on their site at: http://innersensebeauty.com/

Vegans who love good hair products must try NUMBER 4 Haircare. It gets the BEST results and are Vegan, Organic, gluten free, Paraben free, sulfate and soduim chloride free. They smell amazing, protect color from fading, protect from heat, keeps hair from building up, and creates intensive shine from the first use.

I have gone no 'poo too, since about a month ago. I am not totally loving this yet, but I think my hair is still adjusting. The money I'm saving is great though, and I don't have to worry about which products are vegan and which are cruelty free, since I'm not using any products at all!

I love everything at Simply Pure Products! I have curly hair and when I get out of the shower I spray the hair spray, lighlty scrunch my hair and it keeps lovely, soft curls all day. I also am in love with the Herbal Ice condioner. I have always had a terribly dry scalp (embaressing) but this product has really changed my scalp, no more embarrassment!

I realized a few time ago after remembering the movie "Beauty Shop" that if my hobby was playing with computer, your was probably playing with hairs, rubbing and taking care of them, these are not things who are made to be cut...

@kendle lolashka you can see most of the product ingredients on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Database. I use this DB to check out products before purchasing them.

I appreciate all the efforts put by peoples like Scott to be pleasant, but there's persons who don't seem to understand that things happened on my side during teenage years because of them... I'm probably going to look as if I was a so-called "sissy" during my high school years, but if I was telling that for all my second year and many many time after that 2 nights out of 3 I was crying for 45 minutes after going to bed at night because of what was happening, if that's not love... I make efforts to forgive that, I believe there are things in life that need to not happen...

I use Surface Hair Products and I love them. They say on the packaging they are vegan which is why my hairdresser recommended them to me. They donate back to charity and advise stylists on green practice in the workplace. Here is the website:

I was not a big fan of Giovanni either, they were too drying for my hair but I love their message.

I really like Acure Organics. I attached a video to the post I did that was great, but I just noticed the company took it down. I'm going to keep the link in case it is a mistake.

In any event, I really like the company, vegan, organic, environmentally responsible etc., and the products work great. I've tries many Giovanni Products and from some reason they don't work well for me, but I know tons of people who love them.

I've been using David Babaii for Wildaid for a few months now and I have to say that it's the best hair care products I've used! The Amplifying Shampoo and Conditioner really transformed my flat, oily hair into a luxuious do. I also like to use the volumizing spray to add an extra kick. The also provide a formula for dry brittle hair.

Kendle & X Haller - I was curious myself and I went to Giovanni Cosmetics web page and clicked on FAQs and they state that they do not test on animals; only their lip balms (beexwax) and Magnetic line (lactoferrin) are not vegan. As for ingredient lists, I didn't bother to surf their site. I have found that Amazon does an awesome job of listing product ingredients and usually check there first (especially for the helpful reviews). Maybe this will help??
