Jessica Didn’t Need Surgery After All

Dec 11, 2012 at 10:28am by Alicia Silverstone

Kind lifer Jessica was told she’d need to remove her gallbladder to alleviate chronic stomach pains. Instead, she switched to a plant-based diet. Here’s her inspiring story about what unfolded from that decision:

dBXrE0MTHqOZxpsUYpy2qGBU.jpeg:Amazon:photo

“
I went from a longtime vegetarian to a full-fledged vegan on my 27th birthday. A friend bought me The Kind Diet as a gift and I read the whole book over a two-day span. At that time 3 years ago, I had been experiencing intense stomach pains. Doctors thought it could be a problem with my gallbladder and scheduled me for surgery. I asked repeatedly if it could be something I was eating, but was given an insistent no. I started to keep a food journal, as well as eliminate all animal products from my diet. Within days the pain stopped and has never returned. I followed my instincts and figured out the root of the problem. Becoming a vegan allowed me to discover foods I never knew existed. Plus, I managed to save an organ in the process!

Since switching to a plant-based diet, I feel amazing. I had a flawless first pregnancy, delivering a 10-pound baby boy who is now thriving as a vegan at 14 months. I found such a passion for nutrition, I decided to go back to school and leave my job as a designer in New York City to start my own health coaching business.

Now my life’s work is to help people to eat real, plant-based foods to solve health ailments, lose weight, detoxify, and live naturally happier lives. Many of my clients, friends, and family members have become completely vegan. Others have adopted mostly-vegan eating habits. I have seen cholesterol lowered, acne cured, weight lost, cravings vanished, inflammation decreased, fertility problems solved and a lot more joyous people happy to be making less of a carbon footprint on our amazing planet. I have entered into a whole new holistic way of living, using essential oils, raw foods as medicine, and eco-friendly products. I have truly adopted a kinder life!

Alicia, you are such an inspiration because I came to realize I could love life on a plant-based diet. I went from a flirt to a superhero in two weeks…and never looked back. My life has been changed for the better and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like if I hadn’t read your book. Thank you!”

Jessica, I’m so happy for you! Thank you for sharing your story.

I too was told I needed my gallblader removed due to gallstones. When I asked for any alternate treatments I was basically told nothing. I was already on a vegan diet but cutting fat (which is the worst trigger) basically made my attacks stop. However, because the stones are larger, I have to do something else. After a good friend recommended it I've started seeing an accupucurist and chinese herbalist who put me on something to dissolve stones. I still have a surgery scheduled and have to decide if I am going to cancel soon. My only worries are that it takes a while to dissolve stones and you DO need some fat in your diet. :/ But the more I reserch the more I find people who have their gallbladders removed DO have problems after. My sister in law was one. Has anyone else ever tried herbal disolution of stones with success?

Thank you so much for your story Jessica! I had been vegetarian for a few years, but noticed that I was getting severe stomach ache whenever I ate. Yet when I ate a plain, plant based meal, I would have no pain whatsoever. I became a vegan as a promise to my fiancée I have to admit, but just a short time after ward, I noticed that the severe stomach pains had all disappeared! I have now been vegan for only 3 months, but already I can see and feel the benefits, and nothing will change my mind about being vegan!

Wow! This is a great story, thanks for sharing. My gallbladder was removed three years ago, after an orgy of Christmas Cookie consumption. All I remember is pain that was bad enough that I just wanted it gone. I asked the doctor about the side effects and was essentially told that it was a common surgery and that I'd be fine. Three years later, all is not fine. Before surgery I never had issues with diarrhea or urgent need to use the bathroom. I also really love vegetables...particularly raw vegetrables. These are almost impossible for me to digest now. I'm still seeking solutions. And I still get stomach pain. I wish I had done what Jessica had done and looked at the long term instead of the short term.

I have an appointment with a surgeon in 2 days. They want to remove my gall bladder. I called today and cancelled the appointment. I just don't want to have an organ removed. I've been doing research for the past few weeks and have decided to cut out everything but keep a plant based diet. I'm already borderline vegan, I haven't had dairy or meat in years. (with the exception of seafood) I'm letting go of sugar, fats, coffee, soda, white flour, etc, in hopes that I can heal this myself. If it doesn't work, okay. I'll have the surgery. I am hoping to make a lifelong commitment to my health. I'm in this for the duration. I believe in the healing power of foods.

Wow, thank you all so much for all this good info!!!! I can definitely look for and try these things. I do worry about the effects of taking pain meds regularly and try to take as few as possible. I am haveing some better days, maybe from my changes. Taking Nopal cactus juice, tart cherry juice, pretty much went vegan, no refined sugars, juicing and smoothies, nuts and seeds, fruits and veggies, a lot of raw, different supplements and some herbs, tea, raw honey, filtering my water, fewer chemicals in my home and on my body. Not sure about chiropractic, cause I am screwed together. Not sure they can really manipulate my neck. Besides that would really hurt. Will try Arnica, meditation, colonics. I got very upset when watching "Veducated" on Netfli- cause of footage of slaughterhouses, but I calmed down and know I must stay stress free and calm. I really really appreciate your input and will look for some of these things tomorrow.

      Hi Peggy,

You can go to the health food store and ask for the pain reliever called "Arnica". They come in a little blue vial.

My massage gal told me about it and I was astonished with how well it worked. Maybe try the heavy juicing/raw foods/enemas first to jump start and then try substituting one dose a day of your pain meds with the Arnica instead. You just put them on your tongue and they dissolve.

Hope this helps...being in constant pain isn't just awful it really is 'life-threatening' because you can't enjoy or do the things you want to do. I hope you get better very soon.

Hi Peggy! I just want to say I have had two back injuries and my mother in law has had her back fused as well, the only thing I have found to help with the pain is something called NUCCA chiropractic. I was told I had to have surgery on my lower back and may need metal rods, then I was told I would be an ideal candidate for disc replacement. After much research and debate, I began searching for a natural cure for my back issues. NUCCA has been a life saver. Dr Robert Brooks is my doctor and people fly in from around the country to see him. It has been three years and a baby later since they told me I had to have surgery and 90 percent of the time I am pain free. He literally saved my life. :) I hope this helps!!!

Hi Peggy, this all sounds truly awful for you. I personally do not have any faith in conventional doctors. If you think about it, they will always see the answer as being what they know ie a surgeon will always think to cut, a local doctor will always think to hand out prescription medicine. If you keep going to them hoping for a different outcome, you are never going to receive it!

I think there is something to be said for a raw plant based diet. I would not normally suggest toally raw as this is HARD, but in a severe case like yours that is what I would do. I also strongly believe in power of fresh JUICING on a big scale, obviously no meat, dairy etc, and wait for it... colonics/enemas. I know you are trying to get off the prescribed painkillers and I agree you need to find an alternative. These pills are toxic in your body, and you want your body to be able to focus on healing itself, not having the additional task of fighting the toxins. Obviously if you are in immense pain you can not come off them just like that, but if you go raw, amp up the juices, and take regular colonics/enemas, you are giving your body a fighting chance to heal itself.

I also think these doctors are not having a positive effect on your MINDSET. You need to be seeing people who are personally invested in getting to the root of your problems, not treating you like a number and giving up on you. I know this may sound freaky, but I am a total stress bucket, and have been looking into meditation to relax. If you can focus on relaxing your mind, it will have a posiive effect on your body too, as we hold a lot of tension in our bodies - and you have enough pain and stiffness going on without adding to it!

I know it all sounds sooo straightforward on paper, but hey, unlike the conventional doctors, none of these things are going to do harm, and will actually do good. It may also help you feel that you are taking some power back and are actively doing something yourself, instead of putting all your hopes on these unreliable doctors.

GOOD LUCK and I wish you well!

Point taken, Vanessa. I am discouraged because I have been doing what my doctors have told me for 22 year, from surgery on down. I will no longer let them hurt me. I sit across the room from them so they cannot grab my head and jerk it right or left. I have looked to doctors to help me and they haven't. They have been rude in some cases, insulting, non-believing, and have made mistakes on me and on my appointments, and my prescriptions. And here I am all these years later in more pain than ever. After 2 surgeries, my surgeon said, "I have perfect record, you are done, don't come back." So what the heck am I supposed to do now? Now my pain dr. says I have fibro, and my neck pain is NOT from my old injury. Don't know what to do now, but I do take pain pills or I would have no life at all. I also wear a cervical collar when I leave the house and take a high-backed chair to all family functions to support my head.

I'm 7 weeks post emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and I have been a vegan all year. I asked how the heck I got gall stones when I am on a plant based diet, and mine was due to a severe case of acute pancreatitis. My gall bladder had to come out immediately, there was not possible way it could stay in. You cannot always heal your body with food, sometimes you need to look to your doctor and get some extra help.

I had my first gall-bladder attack a few months ago. Dr. sent me for radiograph, then sonogram, then MRI. Said, "yeah, you have a gall stone." Then she wanted me to see surgeon so he had my name JUST IN CASE I ever need him! Ridiculous. My main concern is chronic pain. I have an old neck injury and have done everything imaginable to take care of, including 2 fusions. Nothing has helped. Now dr. says I have fibromyalgia. I have changed my diet in hopes of relieving some of this pain. Does anyone out there know about any changes or supplements that may help with chronic pain? Can't do ANY neck movements, wear a cervical collar, hard to drive, pain 24/7. I have given up meat, dairy, refined sugars, and working on giving up gluten. Any ideas much appreciated. Thank you!!!!

Deb, you are wrong. Many illnesses are not caused by environmental factors. Mutations can happen randomly (thus evolution) or passed on at birth. And it's just mean to tell someone with, for example, a mutated BRCA 1/2 mutation that she can cure her breast cancer with proper nutrition. That's just victim blaming.

I used to have terrible "gallbladder attacks" that would leave me doubled over in pain. I remember once laying in my car in a parking lot outside of a restaurant crying because it hurt so bad. I started keeping better track of when it was happening and realized it was what I was eating. Mainly meals heavy in animal products, particularly animal fat. It just so happened that during this same period in my life was when I was learning more about animal rights, which lead me to a vegetarian and then vegan diet. About a year after changing the foods I was eating it hit me that I hadn't had any problems with my gallbladder in months, a year even. I'm thankful to not have experienced that pain in over 7 years!

To Susan and Shannon and others..It is an absolute fact that ALL illness is caused either by poor nutrition and/or toxicity in the body's environment.

Have you ever heard of the Gerson Therapy? Max Gerson was a very special and genius doctor back in the 30's who was waaay before his time. He understood that the body is a self-healing machine. Think of all the times you may have scraped or cut yourself or burned yourself while cooking or playing or whatever. Your body closes up the wound and creates new skin all by itself. You didn't have to go to a doctor for it. That's occurring without, where we can see it.

Problems occurring within are no different and Max Gerson identified that. In the presence of proper nutrition and removal of toxic influences the body does it's perfect job of creating new cells to heal and bring back the perfection it was designed to live in. He used plants and massive amounts of fresh vegetable juice to obtain these results for his patients. He believed that drugs only added to the body's toxicity and turned to nature and a Garden of Eden of healing plant foods to kick start the innate power of the body to heal itself from the inside out.

Max Gerson was actually poisoned when his research began to become mainstream knowledge. He cured Albert Schwitzer's wife and daughter along with a thousand other people's terrible 'incurable' death sentence ailments beginning 80 YEARS ago. He was such a threat to 'modern medicine' and doctors and pharma that someone wanted to shut him up. This 'shutting up' still continues today. His daughter, Charolette Gerson continued his work when she was old enough and to this day runs the Gerson clinics in Mexico and...in another country--can't think of it right now but it is NOT in the United States. Know why?!

It is AGAINST THE LAW in the US to say there is any treatment for cancer besides radiation and chemotherapy. Against the LAW. There has been a cure for cancer and so many other awful illnesses for almost a century but it has been suppressed.

If you don't believe me go search the Gerson website and watch the documentary. There are many documentaries featuring Charolette Gerson (who is around 85 now and looks amazing) and testimonies from many, many people who were given a death sentence by their doctors years ago. Cancer, Hodgekins disease, cervical cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, diabetes and on and on. These folks had nowhere to turn and then found the Gerson Therapy. They have boggled the minds of their US doctors because they were given months to live and cancers and tumors and all of their illness disappeared. They tell their stories and have lived for years beyond their predictions of imminent death.

Gerson believed that if the body was flooded with God-given nutrients it would heal itself. It's a proven fact. Thousands and thousands of people on the edge of death have recovered.

Certainly, modern medicine has a vital role in our lives today. If I'm in a terrible auto accident and need to be put back together and given drugs for the pain--I want that solution. But as far as internal illness goes we in the US just don't get the information we need to help HEAL our bodies. We're not ALLOWED to have it according to our laws. We are told to put more toxicity in to cure the problem of being toxic (or malnourished)in the first place.

Okay, 'nuff said! Please check it out--share it with the ones you love and know, God forbid, that if you or yours should ever face illness like this you have the best alternative available.

I appreciate hearing the stories of those who changed their diets and changed their lives, their looks and their destiny. Just pick up your fork and your big 'ole glasses of juice and eat and drink your way to the CURE because it does exist.

      Oh, and be Merry :0)

Though I believe that a whole food diet is a preventative measure for disease, I believe the "kind cures" section of this website is very irresponsible. You have asked people to post their "cures" and now somebody claims they know somebody who cured their cancer through diet alone. Somebody could read that and decide that they don't need medical treatment, which would more than likely lead to their death.

I keep reading about "curing acne" on this site, and people should be careful with the wording they use. There is no cure for acne. If a vegan diet, or any other diet cured acne you could go off the diet and the acne would never return and that is not the case.

What a wonderful story! I have a friend who, at age 24, was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was a vegetarian at the time, but quickly switched to a vegan/macrobiotic diet with only pure, whole, plant-based foods (in other words, "Superhero"!). Without medication, surgery or any sort of treatment, she was cancer-free within a matter of months...and still is! Some call it a fluke, some call it a miracle, but she gives all the credit to changing the way she eats! She was offering her body the nutrition and power it needed to combat the toxins in her system, rejuvenate her body and turn her health around. She swears by this lifestyle and even attended the Toronto Institute of Holistic Nutrition in order to help others become healthier, too!
