Hey everyone, I wanted to share this event with all you kind lifers in or around NYC:
It's a fundraiser for NY-Class, (New Yorkers for Clean Livable And Safe Streets) to put an end to horse-drawn carriages in New York City. This is a cause that is very important to me as well as the lovely Lea Michele who guest blogged about it here.
All the food served will be vegan and they're having a silent auction of some great items. Here are the details:
NY-Class Horseless Carriage Cocktail Party
Date & Time: May 3, 2012 7pm-11pm
Location: Tribeca 360, 10 Debrosses Street, NYC
Buy tickets HERE.
Have you taken a bike or taxi in NY? They are pretty cool! How do you think we can put an end to this silly and very sad practice?

To the Drivers who commented: I do read horse "body language".
Especially when a young horse is itching to move, but forced to stand hooked up to harnesses sometimes for hours before moving with it's carriage. It's inhumane and senseless. Work is definitely good for domestic horses. They need exercise. But not in the way you make a living. If these horses were rotated on an hourly or bi-hourly basis, then fine. Even if it was up to 4 hours, okay. But, not without proper turnout and stalls that they can acutally lay down in. And don't start with how they lock their knees to sleep and it's fine. Horses need time to rest off of their feet. The pavement day in and day out is not their natural environment. The heavy steel shoes constrict their hooves, not allowing the foot to expand and contract as they walk, restricting blood flow and causing poor circulation in the entire body. In addition, horses can get desensitized to the noises of the city, but at what cost? The possibility of them being spooked and running into traffic? And what about the vehicle drivers? How many times have they run into the poor horses! And the weather? Some horses do not mind the rain, snow, cold or extreme heat. But which ones? Have you "asked" them recently? You are forcing this upon them. You may think you love your horses. And I'm sure many of you think you are taking proper care of them, but have YOU researched? Horse and carriage was a necessity once a very long time ago, when the horses would be returned to their FARMS after work to rest and play. They are not kept at farms any longer. Your "BARNS" are not suitable for animals of that size. If you make provisions for this, so many would not be against you. If you made changes, you might be able to keep your businesses. If you were confined to the parks, no streets: If your horses were limited to 6 hour days: If the age minimum were 5 years and maximum 15: If after the day's work they were returned to an area with stalls of a minumum 12' x 12' area with a window: And two days a week rest at a local farm with minumum 1/2 acre paddock access, then people would actually listen to your side. -
After relocating for you to New york city quite a while back again, I wanted to go to have in mind the city. Several friends informed me about read here and I chose to give them a try. Many of the ladies had been stunning as well as warm and friendly

I visited NYC (my old home) this weekend, and spent Sunday afternoon at the park because it was such a beautiful day. I was glad to see so many protesters of the carriages near the area where they pick up, but also was saddened by the large number of tourists that I noticed still taking the carriage rides.
One of the friends I was travelling with had mentioned that she had always wanted to take one of those rides and, while I hated to be the "Debbie Downer", I had to tell her about the realities of it. I really wish that there was some way to better inform visitors about the cruel reality of the carriages. :( The bikes are a far better option for enjoying a tour of the park.

What a HYPOCRITE!!!! The multi-millionare co-founder of NYCLASS Steve Nislick owns EVENTING horses!!!! But he is trying very hard to deprive 68 middle class small business people and their families of their livelihoods because they own carriage horses.
Carriage horses routinely walk or trot slowly, and have one of the lowest accident and mortality rates of any working horses.
Eventing horses perform at a dead run and a gallop, and have one of the highest accident and mortality rates-- almost right up there with race horses.
Really MS. Silverstone- you need to do your own research on this or hire a more competent researcher before yougo on record promoting more of this kind of hyprocrasy.
-
Oh, my yes. I find it HIGHLY hypocritical that Nislick owns eventing horses and bashes the carriage horses. All you have to do is compare the safety records, and it becomes immediately clear which of the two activities is more hazardous for the horses. No denying that!
But then Nislick and NYCLASS aren't ABOUT the horses. They're about the possible profit if they are able to drive the horses out of the city. The whole "poor horses" thing is just a convenient hook to hang their greed upon. A way to manipulate the bleeding hearts into supporting them. Anyone who has read anything about the issue, and who has half a brain, knows that.
-
Anyone else find it highly hypocritical that the founder of NY-Class Steve Nislick is an eventer and owns eventing horses? Pine-Top-Farm/2007-04-15-USEA-Horse-Trial/Sonny-Little-and-Abdullahs/2733144_bNzSa/2#!i=145166632&k=jTtVD

I dont know if you actually read these posts, Ms. Silverstone, but you are sadly mistaken. The cause you have put your name to is not a worthy one. Please do some independant research on the Carriage Horse issue. Get more general horse knowledge. Learn their body language. People who can not properly read horses, can Not possibly begin to interpret what they are seeing. Visit the barns, speak to some drivers. Get first hand info. from the Horses mouth! Not their rear ends. See for yourself the love they are shown. The daily care that they recieve. The hearts they touch. Work is not a bad thing. They are the only animals who utilize their minds and bodies the way they were desiged to. They are not trailered to shows, jumped over huge walls, running around barrels.....They are Loved, Respected and revered for the magnificant creatures that they are. Not to be displayed as lawn ornaments on these ficticious "farms" to live purposless lives. That is cruel. If you truely have an interest in this, for yourself and most importantly the Horses, look deeper.....Horses speak to us, but you need to understand their language....
-
We are so thankful for Alicia Silverstone for standing up for these beautiful animals. Horses should be in the countryside - not the busy streets of Manhattan.
All proceeds of the event will go towards building the prototype of the cruelty-free, all electric Horseless Carriage. Tickets can be purchased at www.nyclass.org/horselesscocktails.

I wonder has anyone ever seen an abuser or someone supporting abusiveness admit to it?
I've witnessed NYC mounted police charge their horses into crowds. Horses are not pets and therefore while I've seen horses shoved and kicked I've rarely seen anyone react to that. There's not that much sensitivity towards horses generally speaking.
In the eyes of the abuser and that mindset there never is any abuse. There is nothing "ill conceived" about adopting a new mindset or looking at what's considered normal or acceptable in a completely different way. Maybe that's the only way change can occur.
-
What's so "kind" about an ongoing effort to force 68 small businesses who have done NOTHING WRONG out of operation and drive those families and their horses into poverty?
Someone seriously needs to grow up and get a clue. Unfortunately, there's no real hope of that happening, I am sure. :-(
-
Ms. Silverstone, what do you base your opinion on? Have you been the stables? Have you talked to the drivers? Did you know that not one NYC carriage horse driver has ever been cited for abuse or neglect of their horse(s)? Did you know that in the last 30 - that's THIRTY - years, three horses have died in traffic accidents, and seven others died while on duty from either natural or unknown causes? Can any other equestrian discipline match that? I'm not trying to minimize the death of any horse, but those are remarkable numbers.
I really wish that people that support a ban on carriage horses, particularly celebrities, would do some independent research and visit the stables before jumping on this ill-conceived bandwagon.
The New York City carriage horses are some of the most regulated animals in this country. The fact there has never been a citation for mistreatment or cruelty, even with an awful lot of folks looking for it (including the ASPCA which supports a ban), speaks volumes.

I really do feel privledged to know of and be a part of this group of considerate beings.
I won't be able to go to this event although I'm less than 3 hours away in upstate NY.
I live quite near beautiful Saratoga Springs which is a privledge too. However part of that city's history and current economics includes horse racing. Horse racing is not healthy for the horses nor many of the humans caught in the get rich quick scheme of gambling.
I don't have any easy answer just a prayer that some day people might be able to connect the dots that violence and disrespect, towards any lifeform, creates more of the same.
-
I'm glad this is being done! Horses are beautiful animals and don't deserve to live in such horrible conditions.
-
oh heck yeah, I would definitely like to be there...I totally support all horses coming out to Long Island farms and going to upstate farms! They do not deserve the torchure of city living! No animals do!
