Candle 79 Chefs
My friends Joy and Benay of Candle Cafe and Candle 79 work very closely with NYCHSF, a great organization that is working hard to bring healthy veg food to schools in New York. Their advisory board includes some amazing members, like China Study author T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, MD, among others.
NYCHSF is already in 17 schools in New York City and in all of the elementary schools in Ithaca, NY (hooray, Ithaca)! In NYC, they have a waiting list of 48 more schools that would like the plant-based entrees and nutrition education NYCHSF offers, but they need more resources to be able to expand.
If you'd like to help out, you can donate to NYCHSF here.

Thanks for all the posts! Feel free to check out our website: www.healthyschoolfood.org and the recipes that are on our site. Also, you can use Wellness Wakeup in your schools - it's written by registered dietitians and is all plant-based. Look up our phone number on our website and feel free to contact us.

Wonderful to hear about this healthy change in attitude about food served in public schools! It's about time! May the force be with them!

Meanwhile, didn't the FDA decide the pizza counts as a vegetable in school lunches? So nice to see what they great people are doing. Good ideas spread, so hopefully it'll spread quickly.

Wow, this is very cool. I watched Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution segments last year as he tried to get some healthier foods into schools in Los Angeles and he had to go up against their school boards that seemed like archaic goverment agencies that would not allow healthier changes to be allowed in their schools. This Candle Cafe is an inspiration if they can expand their program to go national just imagine what a difference they could make in the children getting good, quality plant-based meals. I hope to hear more of this group and wish them the very best in their healthy endeavors.

Yay! This is so great! I'm also working with an amazing group of people here in the SF Bay Area (Palo Alto) to start overhauling the public lunch system. Thanks to groups like NYCHSF, we can see what works and what doesn't to help our initiative work here! I'm happy to say that so far our school district has agreed to provide a vegan dish once a week (my kids are SO HAPPY b/c they've never actually tried the school lunch...mama says "no" usually, plus they are disgusted by what they see their friends eating anyway).

I met Candle Cafe in New York City at the Green America Lunch where they supplied the most amazing salad for the guests! Really good food and really really nice people! - Caroline at Eco Swim by Aqua Green www.ecoswim.com @eco_swim
