lea michele on horse drawn carriages...

Jan 26, 2011 at 12:00pm by Alicia Silverstone

A while ago, the lovely Lea Michele wrote a blog for us about her feelings about horse drawn carriages. I recently came across this video that she did for PETA about the same issue, and wanted to share.

Lea I love you! Thank you for making this very wonderful and heartfelt video. I hope the whole world sees it!

I agree with Barnyard, you make some excellent points. The biggest thing we need to improve is how we are caring for these animals. Over and over again I see the same common thread and that is we treat animals like they are inanimate objects that we can discard when we don't want them anymore. But they are living, breathing beings just like us and they need to be respected. We need to think about the impact we make on an animal when we take it out of its natural enviornment, but above all, we need to make sure that we are providing it with the basic things we require for ourselves - quality food and nutritional and a warm and dry shelter to rest in that is safe.

This saddens me deeply... I love horses more than most things... My boys are ASB rescues that were on there way to slaughter... I have always wondered where the horses stayed after they were done working... I hoped that they were taken home and given days off by rotating them with other horses... I don't have a problem with giving horses a job but like anyone else they need to be compensated for their work!

And YES when they don't meet the needs of their thoughtless owners, they are dumped in kill pens and shipped out of the country for inhumane (extra horrible not that any kind of slaughter is really good) slaughter... I'm sure there are other rescue's but If anyone is interested in rescuing a horse from a kill pen or donating money (the smallest donation helps potential homes bail out the horses and ship them home) check out this website... AC4H.com (another chance for horses) Christy is amazing and every week theere is a new batch of horses in the kill pen... She does her best and we all try to pitch in as best we can but she can't save them all... a lot of these horses are amish buggy horses who no longer meet their needs... my boys are both ex-amish horses

The owner of one stable in Manhattan is being evicted, and the building will be torn down to make way for new developments. I wish we could use this as an opportunity to improve conditions for the horses.

I've been lucky enough to have shared my life with horses since I was a little girl and most of them do love being ridden and worked and can get quite agitated if for instance circumstances have meant they're to miss out for a few days. However, pulling a carriage on the rock hard streets of the city would be a no no even if it were just for the fact that anything faster than a walk is hard on their hooves and legs. They don't sleep lieing down, well the foals do until they're about a year old and then they just don't seem to want to anymore, maybe it's their instinct kicking in where in the wild that would leave them vulnerable to attack. However, they do like to "play" in their paddocks and roll so why it isn't illegal to keep a horse permanently in a city stall is just beyond me. Wouldn't it be classed as animal cruelty in any State?

However, are ALL carriage horses treated the same way? Maybe in New York but what about other places..are they all worked 7 days a week? Just because a horse pulls a carriage does this mean they don't get to live in a pasture? I have to add (even though it's getting a little off topic) that Peta are very quick to point their finger at ANY animal in so called captivity but I actually feel that the human/animal relationship CAN be an improvement on the wild. We have the ability to provide animals with everything they need, and for horses; large open spaces for running and grazing, warmth in the cold, protection from predators, healthy balanced diet, dental and medication. If a wild horse breaks its leg, it's going to suffer a long time before death comes from starvation or until another animal eats it alive, lets face it, nature is harsh, it is possible for an animal to have a much happier and fulfilled life with human involvement.

I wouldn't just say NYC because the horses on Michigan Ave in Chicago go through the same thing. It breaks my heart to see them standing on the side streets freezing and looking so depressed. Their stables are at least one floor and they don't have to go up 3 stories like in NYC. I'm from Chicago but live in LA and it's the same when I go to Studio City farmer's market and see the "petting zoo". I want my child to be able to see these animals and show them love but at the same time I don't condone how these animals are being treated for our entertainment.

Wow.... I never really thought of it that way. I myself have never been in a horse drawn carriage, but always thought it would be romantic for my bf to take me on one. Now I realize there is nothing romantic about these horses suffering needlessly.

The first time my mom came to visit me in New York years ago, I had a huge fight with a horse drawn carraiage operator. He asked me if I wanted a ride. I asked him why he felt it was okay to make a living exploiting animals. He said he treated his horse better than his girlfriend. I then went into a fury, where my mom had to pull me away. What I don't understand is how so may people think its okay. It infuriates me.

Wow! Lea did a great job with the video...what an eye opener! I would never take a ride in a horse drawn carriage, and I am completely against this practice. I do hope that this is seen by the masses.....I agree with Brian, that this would make a great Super Bowl commercial! It is heartbreaking to think of these horses having to live their lives this way, being worked like this, kept in these conditions, and treated this way....being used and abused for greed. This is really awful that people do this. I don't know why this is legal.

I've always thought this to be an awful practice! My mom lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia where they still have horsedrawn carraiges in the downtown area and they always look so decrepit and sad. Many of the horses are far too old to be working. Not only that they're not designed to carry those heavy carts like larger horses... like Clydesdales. I used to ride horses and understand they need to be exercised but they also need time to roam and lay down and rest like the video says.

I totally agree about the super bowl commercial. It would take nothing less to open peoples eyes~

What is wrong with people? I've seen pictures of the poor horses that have to do this day in and day out. All you have to do is is look at them and anyone can instantly read their body language. They look so sad and miserable. I expect that when the day comes that they can't do this drudgery any longer, they probably get trucked to the slaughter house. I wish people were more enlightened smiley-yell.gif

I've had horses my whole life, and let me tell you, there's nothing more beautiful than a horse galloping free in a field of fresh air (or large corral) to stretch his/her legs, to eat fresh-growing field clover, or to lie down in a field or in the comfort of a sizeable stall with thick straw as bedding. Horses also like to roll in dirt, and they certainly don't have these creature comforts if they live in the middle of a city! I have boycotted horse-drawn carriages since I was a small child based on sheer common sense that these city horses have probably not laid down in years, except for the times that they may slip and fall on the street. They may have never known what it is like to stretch their legs in a field of grass. We humans have NOT said goodbye to slavery -- it's alive and thriving in New York and other cities! We must all do our part and spread the word about the cruelty of horse-drawn carriages. Thanks Alicia, for allowing us to voice our opinions!

My older sister grew up on a farm in Wyoming, riding horses, milking cows, etc. When I declined her invitation to see Cavalia (a touring Cirque du Soleil show that features dozens of white horses), her response to me was, "They like it. Horses like to work hard and be trained to perform." You've got to be kidding me. If she really knew what those horses have to go through and how they are treated when they aren't "performing" I could only hope that she would recognize the severe injustice these animals receive, all in the name of profit and entertainment. Fresh off of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." This goes for all of Earth's living creatures. "The time is always right to do what is right." -MLK, Jr. Live, love and let live.

heartbreaking. but it is inspiring to see that something is being done to stop this, that there are so many people who care. sadly, what is shown in this video is a four star treatment compared to what animals in india have to endure...and very few people care.

Now this is a super-bowl commercial I would like to see..

Before the first post, I wondered where they were kept and how they were cared for but I never thought about the working conditions for them. Now that I see an example of what can happen, I will NEVER consider a carriage ride.

Does anyone know if there is something we can do about this???? Boycotting is a no brainer but how can this be allowed to happen to these poor helpless animals? If anyone knows of a way to help put a stop to this I would gladly do it.

The whole idea of keeping animals for the sole purpose of making money is horrible and results in poor conditions, neglect and suffering. If we wish to share our lives with animals, for any reason, they should be treated with love and respect and be provided with the same physical, mental and emotional conditions that we afford humans.

A few years ago, I was walking through central park with a coworker and I said to her: "Isn't it so cruel that these horses have to work all day with no breaks, while walking on pavement breathing in fumes from cars? It's just awful they should be in a field running not in new york city."

and she said to me "No I think they like it. I mean they're doing what they love, pulling things and walking."

I will NEVER forget that! Even today I walk past them lined up along Central Park South and it breaks my heart when I look into their eyes. They just look like they're in pain. The poor babies. I would love to steal them and take them away!

Oh my gosh, Pim, you said it perfectly - that last sentence is what I think when I watch these types of videos or walk my dogs past endless homes that have dogs barking frantically or I hear my neighbor's poor dog barking for hours on end to come inside...

I love when people have been blessed with lots of money and visibility make great use of their fan followings and take a stand against injustices in our world. Great job, Lea Michele (are we supposed to refer to her with both names?!?) lol

I definitely didn't think about this- since I'm no where near a big city with horse drawn carriages. But thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I've always thought that taking a ride in a carriage was a bit strange. How romantic can it be riding in a carriage, in heavy traffic, with a coachman/woman sitting right in front of you?? And then pay a ton of money to go down a block and back?? I've definitely never been a fan.

And I'm definitely not now! Thanks for sharing!
