let's check out jamie oliver's food revolution!

Apr 11, 2011 at 8:00am by Alicia Silverstone

Chef Jamie Oliver is working hard to make America's school kids healthier. His show Food Revolution is about getting kids away from processed foods and introducing them to healthier ones, by teaching them the joy of cooking with fresh ingredients. While Jamie's not specifically promoting a plant-based diet (hopefully one day he will wake up to the brilliance of that!), I support his effort to make kids healthier. Incorporating more whole grains, fresh fruits, and veggies into kids' diets, and reducing their sugar and fat intake is definitely a step in the right direction.

Jamie is so passionate about his cause, and so spunky! Hopefully he'll be able to reach an audience that would never consider a plant-based diet. At least he may convince some people to make some major changes in the right direction. After all, getting friendly with healthier foods is the first step toward being more open to a plant-based world. Baby steps are better than no steps!

So, let's support Jamie's Food Revolution by tuning into the show! It premiers Tuesday April 12 8/7c on ABC - watch it live or DVR it and catch up whenever it's convenient!

Let's all discuss it as the show progresses, and see if it's making a difference. Are the people featured in the show getting healthier? Are they taking steps in the right direction? What do you think will happen? I didn't see the first season, so I'm really curious about this one! Did any of you see season one? Any clues as to how this season might go?

I can't wait to hear what you think!

WOW did anyone watch The Jamie Oliver show last night? Deno was so rude to Sophia and seemed like he did not care what she had to say about her family having diabeties and how fast food was a factor. It really breaks my heart. It is also sad how he showed that most students do not know where the food comes from. If a school has Health as an encore class then teachers need to disucss not only the human body, but also food.

This is very devasting to hear that only 1 school in LA is allowing Jamie to come in and speak and start a revolution. When I become a teacher I know that in my curriculum I will incorportant eating healthy. But if I see how my students are eating in and outside of the cafateria, I hope that I can make a difference or some how get Jamie to come to the district and start a positive change.

In addition, I like how the preschool I worked in the parents bring in a heathly snack like apples.

As Jamie Oliver would say, "if there is crazy scientific names within the ingrediants, don't buy it. Know what your eating".

Thank You Alicia for The Kind Diet and having a website that we can share stories & thoughts. I know I am not the only one to say this, but I truly appreciate it <3

Tara - last I read, they are postponing airing it until June, partially due to a lower number of viewers compared to the first season. Instead, they're playing reruns of Dancing With the Stars - 'cause apparently that's what America wants. I just hope they don't do away with it altogether, because they kept pushing it back and now it's until June. Such a shame - maybe a lot of America (at least the TV watching crowd) doesn't really want to see the truth - they'd rather watch 'celebrities' dance.

As with kristen, I've been watching Jamie on tv for a long time. I think he is just brilliant, and he consistently puts himself out there to help and educate others whilst also challenging the social norms that many institutions (educational or political for example) and cultures have towards food. I can't think of any other 'celebrity chef' who has done what he has done to the same extent and feracity. If he was to specifically highlight vegetarianism or veganism in one of his next shows, I'd be well impressed :)

I am so glad Jamie is doing this in America! He had such a big influence in the UK, especially with what they serve to kids in schools. I hope he can achieve the same success in America! I always find though, that the sort of people who should watch these programmes, dont! I heard yesterday that 1 in 5 children in the UK are overweight! Its awful what people are doing to their children through ignorance! And mostly it gets ignored by doctors, yet my little girl is petite (like me) eats a very good diet, yet they are concerned about her and she has to go for checks every few months to see if shes growing! And she is, its so silly!

I watched seasoon 1 and was super excited to see an inspirational show on tv that is moving the consciousnes of how america eats in the right direction. Especially since I work in the school system, I am loving that Jamie is starting in the schools because I think the food in the schools needs a total overhaul. I don't eat any of it, and when I have kids they won't eat any of it either. I would love if there are some healthier options to finally come to the schools. Here's hoping Jamie comes to Memphis next, the bbq and obesity capitol of the south!

I am stoked about this! Although I do not have children my concern is no less than any parent. This issue needs to be pressed.

I watched the last FoodRev, and was really pleased with it. I am used to seeing Jamie on the tele over here, and this is by no means the start of his fight. It started with changing the UK lunch systems and educating parents in the UK about how they were going to outlive their children because of the poor eating/exercise habits they were being taught. My main issue with the US FoodRev is how the program is sensationalized, and often speaks down to the viewer, as if they are a child themselves. It seems to be a theme with UK programming that makes it across the water (like Kitchen Nightmares etc). Really shocking that US programming exec's feel that they need to spoon-feed their population information. None the less, it is awesome that Jamie is out trailblazing again. Bless is wee cotton socks, such a hard worker for children/human welfare and education! xo

What an inspirational first show! How sad it is that we live in a world that promoting healthy nutrition is shut out of some of our children's lives. I hope that Jamie is able to make his way in to the school system by the end of the season, but if not, I hope that this show will create enough of an uproar to allow him in now. It's never too late!

I think what Mr Oliver is doing is fantastic. He is asking the questions that most of society is satisfied NOT to ask. Or worse yet, don't even know they need to be asking! He is taking a stand for our future generations, who deserve healthy nutritious food and to be taught, at school the benefit of healthy food choices. And thank goodness he has some big names behind him and some financing because unfortunately it not only takes a lot of passion to push a movement like this through but also requires funding to sustain the battle against these powerful organizations.

If we teach the power of nutrition to our children our "healthcare crisis" would no longer be a "crisis". Speaking of healthcare....they are the next sector that need a food revolution. Just look at what we serve hospitalized patients! it is not nutritous, wholesome organic foods that heal. It is processed garbage that has little to no nutritional value if you ask me.....ice cream and pudding and jello? What nutritional value do any of those have for someone who is facing chronic life threatening illnesses. NONE! As a former nurse I know nutrition is at the bottom of most medical doctors list of things to address with their patients....when it should be their first.

It saddens me that organizations, like public school systems, would rather keep people in the dark than to educate them about how to better themselves and their lives. We can't be complacent and we need to speak up about how important good nutrion is. But I guess if we start with ourselves and teach through our actions we are doing our own small part to contribute to the health of ourselves, our families and our planet. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind???? I can hope right?

It's great that he's doing this! Some people are stubborn but it's still a positive step toward opening peoples' eyes to the realities of the typical American diet. I know if I ever have kids, I will not be purchasing school lunches for them at all, but would instead pack them healthy, satisfying lunches from home.

Here is the lunch menu for my daughter's elementary school lunch tomorrow:

baked or sweet potato bar; soup & crackers, yogurt, carrots, fresh fruit and milk

I know she won't eat the potato, but she loves their soup (its usually either chicken noodle or tomato). They have also been serving baked tilapia and encouraging the children very hard to at least give it a try and I have heard from the cafeteria people that more and more children are opting to buy their lunch when the tilapia is on the menu. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my daughter to at least try it yet but I'm hoping. Anyway, I am very fortunate that I live in a place where obviously at some point people took note of the school lunches and in general it appears that they are trying for healthy stuff. They usually offer about 2 or 3 different types of fruit hoping that one will appeal to each child and sure, they have corn dogs and regular hot dogs on the menu about every 1 1/2 months, but hey, even at home I don't eat healthy 100% of the time. I wish I did and I try, but I am only human. But I think that with the American diet in general, most people eat crap most of the time and only once in a while eat healthy. If you eat crap at home, your not going to care if your kids eat crap at school. Unfortunately those parents aren't going to change, so I think there probably needs to be a nation wide movement to get healthy lunches in school so these next generations can understand how important a healty diet is to their life.

I just watched the first episode of this season and I could feel Jamie's frustration. Sadly it seems he was met with alot of anger. I guess that is what happens when you go up against what Americans call food. It is sad but just reinforces the better way of eating that I have chosen to consume and made my life passion. I'm suprised to see such unreasonable people.

      Love, Sarah

Hehehe the Pea Man! I watched the last season at Huntington and was seriously appalled at how the message didn't get through to so many. Particularly the episode where he made 'commerically-made' chicken nuggets and all this sinew and fat went into it, even bones shredded up and those people still happily ate it up. That's scare tactics at it's rawest state.

I felt so so bad for him whenever he was humiliated, knocked back ...I really hope he gets through to the people of LA. He's put so much effort into making reforms and it'll be severaly dissappointing to see him not come out on top of this one.

Hazel, I think maybe people are becoming shocked about the situation now (kids not being able to bring lunch from home) because they are realizing how bad school lunches are. Most parents probalby think that school lunches would be healthy because you assume that schools are supposed to be doing good and responsible things for your kids. One of the biggest problems is the lack of involvement that parents have because they do not look into this! Find out what your kids are eating! Also, they are probably just realizing how bad this stuff is from the show. This is probably stuff that they feed their kids at home, like chicken nuggets, fatty lasagna, preservative filled fries and whatnot. Hopefully they are also realizing that they are feeding food that is just as bad to their kids at home.

I have to admit, that I was really shocked when I visited the States last year. For Europeans it's hard to understand your culture of eating: the portion sizes are just unbelievable, we (my hubby and me, it was our honeymoon) are really, really good eaters, but we didn't manage to finish our meals. I was especially shocked because I saw that we weren't the only ones. Sure, some people took something at home, but all the waste that was produced, just because nobody was able to finish the portions.

And ,apart from the really great californian cities, it was hard to get something healthy to eat. We just weren't used to it. My husband cried for vegetables after the second week (two weeks before he couldn't believe in his luck to get to eat that much meat...).

It disturbes me to realise that it must be the same in the schools. It's really impossible to understand this, growing up in Europe (although it's probably not the same in every country). We got apples every day in the 80s, there are do's and dont's for parents to pack in the school lunches (it's kind of a cool system: veggies and fruits get green, whole grain etc. get yellow and really fatty and sweet things get a red. It's allowed to put some yellow things in a lunch, but no reds...).

And I have to admit that I love Jamie Oliver, I love his cook books and his super cool attitude. Although he cooks meat, he always treats it with respect. And he tells people that you have to be able to kill an animal if you want to eat meat. I think that is kinda cool. I'm sure, loads of people would change to a kind diet if they had to kill animals.

So: Jamie - go for it!

Roxanne, I agree that so many things are wasteful. Unfortunately, many places can not give away left over food because of policies set in place by their business. Everyone is so afraid of someone getting sick from food that they donated and subsequently getting sued that they will not allow food to be given to good causes. I work at a wildlife rehab and I tried unsuccessfully to get Shoprite to give us the produce that they would be throwing away. THey told me no, that there was nothing they could do because it was corporate policy. This is for wildlife, not even people or pets. Not that they don't deserve the best, because they do, but most people wouldn't expect to get sued if wildlife got sick from some bad apples. One kid literally said that all I could do was try to fish some out of the dumpster. Ridiculous.

Oh that's good. I watched the first one and the main thing i remember about it were the school workers throwing away whole apples just because the kids may have touched them. The amount of waste drove me crazy. They could've given those to the homeless, or at least turned them into compost, but they just threw them away.

A little while ago they were having troubles trying to get the ball rolling in L.A, i forget why. But i'm so glad there's gonna be a second one.

Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey have had shows where they are trying to desensitize their kids about killing the farm animals they urge them into caring for a loving. They say stuff like, 'this pig is gonna make our Sunday dinner, so thank him'...

I never watch Jamie's shows. Except this one. Least i can be almost fully assured that wont happen in this one.

Kimberly - from the articles I've read, as far as I'm understanding it, that school rule has been in place for six years. For some reason, people are upset about it all of a sudden. But you can google 'chicago schools and lunches' or something like that to find out more. I also started a thread about it under RANDOM. It's a strange situation, and definitely something to think about. Though, if the government made everyone eat broccoli, can't say as I'd complain! Interesting side note - my roommate watched this Japanese food documentary and was going on about how this town/city had exercise integrated into its culture. At a certain time each day, a bell would ring (or something like that) and everyone in the town would stop whatever they were doing and move around and exercise. I could hear Americans now, up in arms about their freedom being imposed on. No one wants extreme government intervention, but on the other hand, I don't want to be paying for the medical bills and environmental destruction caused by a whole lotta other people's bad choices. It's all very complex, and interesting to think about in terms of origins of the issues and solutions.
