lil kind life: bear's coachella style

This year, my husband and I took Bear to Coachella to enjoy some tunes out in the desert. We lived in a trailer for three days and had our food and kitchen in there. We shared showers with the other campers and had a good, fun camper experience. This was our third time doing this! Outside, Bear wore noise-canceling headphones to protect his ears and because of the insane heat out in the desert, we all made sure to wear sunscreen and suchplus Bear got a new hat! Here's the story:

Bear's Coachella Style
By Christopher Jarecki

We were headed to Coachella for a few days, and Bear needed a hat. I went to this great vintage store called Blue Bird on Larchmont in LA, and for four bucks, got him a great one.

I have tons of other stuff to rage against, but for some reason, the price of new baby clothes really gets me goin'. So, we get most of his clothes as hand me downs from friends - but if your kids' hand me downs aren't doing it, check out your local thrift store and stick it to the man.

lil kind life: 10 ways to help your kids go green

Here, here! Check out my blog about Blue Bird here. I also want to add that the main reason we prefer hand-me-downs and second-hand clothes for Bear isn't just the fabulous price, but mostly the eco factor. There's no reason to buy new stuff, especially for kids who grow out of their clothes so quickly. But for everything you buy, check out used first - the planet is begging you. The people who lack clean water, clean food, and clean air are begging you.

Also, I find it super sweet that my husband went out and did this. I didn't even ask him to buy a hat for Bear. He just came home and said, "I got Bear a hat for Coachella." What a great daddy for having that thought and going out and getting his baby son a hat! I hope it inspires other guys to go out and take care of their babies' needs. It doesn't cost much to go to a vintage store and find something cool - like hunting and gathering, but for good stuff! I love the idea and level of involvement. I thought it was really sweet!

Here's a video and some more pictures of our family weekend at Coachella:

Bear loves his dad's guitar! The sandals I'm wearing in the picture on the left are in my Open Sky store. They're made of 100% recycled materials and look & feel great. A must have if you need new flip-flops for summer!

We had the most delicious tempeh wraps from this organic stand. The people in the picture above were walking toward the area where they could refill their water bottles. The grounds were really clean, and they had different bins for compost, recycling and landfill waste. It was so great to see the effort to be more mindful.

How can we get more music festivals be more eco-minded?

Hi Alicia, I feel the same as you do! So much so I started a FB Buy Sell and Swap group in my local community for Kids Clothing, Toys and Maternity.. I have 700 local ladies that are so commited to not seeing items go to land fill! We even have a little ruling that if something hasn't sold in a couple of weeks we try to send it to needy families! We have one lady that collects all old baby blankets and sews them in to 'Angle Baby Clothing' (thats the term we use when really tiny babys that dont get to make it to our world and are born pre term 'asleep') she donates the clothing to hospitals so parents at that time of need dont have to worry, their beautiful loved one will have beautiful clothing for their final journey. It is great that so many mums are commited to the pre loved items..

I agree about the cost of baby clothes bing outrageous! But as a seller and owner of an online Vintage clothing store, I personally have worn vintage for years, so when my twins came along, I was accepting everyone's used baby clothing... this really helped cut the cost and waste when it cameto baby clothing... I have even received a small play tower w slide, 2 trikes, 2bikes, wagon, toy box.... When we are done, I find the next person with a child and give it all to them. My twins are now 15 months so, now a neice who has a 5 month old will be getting a lot of it!

Alicia, Thank you for all that you share on your great site. You set an example for others and I think it is so needed in this wasteful world that we all live in and must share. Your simply refreshing from the Hollywood "look at what I do and have" scene. It is rare to see someone be real, giving and educating people by example. That is what your site and book is doing for this planet and the animals.

I got into second hand shopping years ago when I volunteered at a local new thrift store to raise funds for our local hospice patients. My mom had been a patient at hospice and I wanted to find a way to give back to the organization. What a great place to give back to!! But what I learned over the years is that EVERYTHING comes in to thrift stores or consignment stores and for so much less. So I started making a deal with myself and buy only nice used furnishings, clothing, whatever I needed unless I could not live without it. I find I rarely need something brand new and outrageous prices, and the bonus is I always am saving money, and so the savings really add up and can always use a little put away money. Plus I make a point to donate to my church and animal causes and those causes are worth saving for.

We can all learn to live with a little less stuff, expecially children who outgrow their stuff in a few months, including toys. What a wasteful world we live in, so it is great to hear that you do so much of this too and teach your friends and family by example that we don't need to perpetuate more stuff in this world. It really costs so much in the long run with environment, animals, people, landfills.

      Thank you Alicia

it was so wonderful to read and see how your trip went to Coachella, Alicia...it's the kind of place where I would like to go...I used to live in a trailer with my mom and sister, and we lived in a rural area...mom was hooked into buying clothes at the thrift store for small amounts of money, so I wore secondhand clothing at a young age...I still wear secondhand clothes...I can find some really nice, funky type clothing secondhand rather than spending lots of money on new clothes...yeah, that's what I'm into: organic, vegan food...I'm so glad you have this website that we can share our passions...

I bought those flip flops from your open sky store because I live in flip flops and am always on the lookout for ones I can wear all day without my feet hurting. These planet flop flops are so comfortable and I love them!

As for buying clothes second hand, my 13 year old daughter loves going vintage shoppingwith me and she gets the cutest clothes for a great price.

Little Bear is so adorable! We buy our baby all used clothes as well. It just doesn't make sense to buy new clothes, money or environment wise. My community has a lot of consignment sales in the spring and fall where you can buy seasonal clothes from each other, along with a lot of other baby needs. The prices are low, and we are all buying from each other, so it ends up being more like a swap!

And thanks for posting about your family trips. We love to take our 11-mth-old with us everywhere, and often get a lot of negative feedback from family about how we shouldn't be taking him out so much, etc etc. I love to let him see the world, and feel vindicated when I see other families out as well- the babies are so happy! This weekend, we are taking him to the vegan festival in NYC, and I can't wait to try food from all the places you wrote about in your book!

I'm not going to lie, I tend to buy a lot of clothes for my kids. Probably 20% of it is new, where the 80% of it is used. I do buy my used clothes online through ebay or on these other baby selling websites (like a big mom2mom sale website)

There are some things I fall inlove with when i see them at the store, and I just have to have them..

I think that is exciting you guys brought Bear with you. I loved Coachella when I was there in 2006!! I wish i was living back in California so I could have my kids experience coachella as well

Welcome to the hand me down club! Being a Mom of four boys that is basically all my kids wear, as well as myself! I go to several different thrift stores and can always find something that someone in my family can use! Now shoes, that's a different story! They are hard to come by, I don't know if it's just here in Miami, FL or all over but I've not have much success in this department.

      Happy hunting,

      Debi & boys

Has anyone seen Pregnant in Heels? I watched it for the first time this past Tuesday and I was HORRIFIED! Talk about wastful spending on baby clothes (among other things) and not giving a rat's fuzzy about their impact on the environment. :-(

I LOVE the idea of buying kids clothing used. I know my mom does it quite often for my (much) younger brother and sister. It's silly to spend a ton of money on clothes kids are just going to grow out of. I have also recently found some awesome second hand clothing stores in my area so I've been trying that out too! It just makes more sense. You and your husband are such an inspiration to all families. Your book and this site have changed my life in ways you cannot imagine!

I agree wholeheartedly with getting your kids secondhand clothing. There are so many reasons: Good for the environment, Stress reducing for parents because if the 25 cent shorts get hopelessly stained, it's no big deal, Good for the kids to grow up knowing there are alternatives to "new" and "retail". The list goes on, but you get it. Bear is precious, by the way!
