mary cordaro, the healthy home guru

Aug 30, 2010 at 1:42pm by Alicia Silverstone

Mary Cordaro is a healthy home guru and can cure "sick building syndrome" or "sick home".

She focuses on creating a healthy, green workplace and home using the fields of Bau-Biologie (Bau-Biologie translates as "building biology", a discipline from Germany dedicated to improving how our homes impact our lives and the living environment) and Building Science with very low consumption so that you are truly living an ecological lifestyle indoors.

It all started in 1989 for Mary, when she was working on trying to create an eco-friendly environment in her own home. She wanted to use materials that had very little effect on all of us and the planetary health. Since then Mary has gathered a team of specialist to test and eliminate contaminants, electromagnetic fields, mold and chemicals in indoor spaces. Mary continually works with architects, contractors, designers, health practitioners, and medical doctors to find more ways to improve our indoor environment.

Mary is available for consultations and she also sells water purification systems and air cleaners which are found on her online store. The water purifiers and air cleaners offered from Mary Cordaro Inc. are sophisticated and state of the art. They are more effective than most conventional filters and will do a great job at protecting your family from awful chemicals that pollute your indoor area. You can also learn more about healthy indoors in the multi media section of her website. I finally switched my water system over to one I got through Mary. I was stubborn, and it took me a long time to do it, but I did and I'm very happy with it! I'll blog soon about picking out a water filter for your home, and why I struggled so much with this decision.

Mary is expensive...so private consultations are not for everyone. But she does have great info on her website for free, and she teaches classes.

Homes can have 50 times more contaminants than the outdoors...so if you are sick, or have any suspicion that your home has mold in it, it would be very important to call Mary ASAP. It's so worth it.

I've learned some great things over the years from Mary, and I will be sharing that info with you. But for those of you who would like to have a coach for your home – someone to make your home the healthiest and most environmentally friendly you can – and you have the dough to pay for it, she is an amazing resource. She charges by the hour, so you can get a lot of info from her if you need it!

I am glad someone brought up the hot dogs. My sister has an aggressive form of cancer and still eats those things! I get so upset, but there is nothing else I can do besides beg her not to!

As for healthy living...I am all for it. We searched high and low for a great mattress, cause you know those things have high levels of toxins right where you are breathing for 8 hours or more, when I came across this little gem at www.thebedboss.com and a coupon for 35% off any mattress!! When you go to check out type in the coupon code ultimatediscount and it will take 35% off... if it is still good. I believe they are made of bamboo and aloe... I can't get my kids to stay off my mattress now!

Love love love this blog! Thanks Alicia!!!

Any who, we're seriosly considering moving, of ripping out the wall, neither of which sound great! I need to write some good news so... I'm in love with my neighbors new horse!

WOW! Thanks for sharing this info with us about these plants. So, if I read this correctly, your room in the basement will be ripped apart and cleaned out so there's no mold etc, but, what about the upstairs? You said it's a lost cause? What does that mean? And, I had a thought while writing this, since it's water damage, did it happen during a storm, or was in a sump pump malfunction? Is there any way that this could be covered by insurance? Did you check into this yet? Just a thought. I'm going to check out these plants. I have a Mother-in-law tongue, I just haven't heard of the other two. Thanks for the info!

Hello kind life peoples... so we got the contractor man if for estimates, the same guy who redid my room he's really good and pricey by the hour but the amount of work that guy can do in an hour is nuts, seriosly you'd think he was a vegan... on some good for you steroids. but anywho it'd still cost alot so theres chances we'll be ripping things apart, he'll be reconstructing it some and we'll be painting priming ect. at least in the basemant (where theres water damage) the upstairs is kind of a lost cause. ssssoo THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT I FOUND THESE THREE PLANTS ( I DID SOME REARCH TO ) AND THERE CALLED ACEAN PALM (OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES), MOTHER-IN-LAWS TOUNGE (HEHE)AND A MONEY TREE. WE GOT THESE THREE TOXIN-EATING SUPER-AIR-MAKERS AND I ALREADY FEeL BETTER HERES THE LINK FOR MORE DETAILS IF YOUR IN A SIMILAR BOAT. http://www.greenlivingonline.com/article/grow-your-own-fresh-air

Mold is usually pretty pricey to get taken care of, but it is extremely important. Some spores of mold can get into your lungs and cause huge problems. Definitely get that looked at soon!

WOW! Water damage and mold. That is not good. You may need to get a contractor to look at that for you. I can't imagine that it would be inexpensive at all. Do you rent or own? If you rent, your landlord should be looking into this for you. Mold can cause a great deal of health problems. I really hope that you can figure this out for your families health.

Megan! Good for you!! I love to hear the wonderful stories about people who went to a plant based diet and had their health restored, or atleast drastically improved!! Did you see the clip on President Clinton's going to a plant based diet? His stint started clogging up with cholesterol again and he researched it, read The China Study and other items and decided to start eating vegan. Mostly he wanted to be healthy for his daughters wedding, but, the end result was that he's now vegan for health reasons! Yay! President Clinton!! And, Yay Megan and all of us who are taking our health back!!

I have a nutritionist and she thinks that being a vegan is wonderful. I have been loads happier, feeling great, and my asthma has been practically non existent. I have not used my inhaler in weeks! I have no complaints! (Neither does my DOCTOR) Everyone has their own beliefs, but being a vegan has worked wonders for me. YAY meat? I think not.

alicia did a wonderful job touching on alot of health benefits veganism can have in her book, bbut in addition to, The China Study documents the actual studies and facts meat consumption has on human beings.- side note on any given day you can go on the American Cancer Society website and they post the top 10 cancer causing foods-the last time i went on hot dogs were #1 all in a gross class all by themselves, and meat in general was #2-you can't argue w/facts :)

    Rock out vegans :)

I am not really familiar with just how far a vegan lifestyle goes to prevent or aid in the treatment of diseases such as cancer but am a vegan myself. I chose it purely for compassionate reasons and am just learning about all the other great side effects to being vegan. On that note, my husband does have an aunt who is terminally ill with cancer. Now entering it's final stages her doctor has suggested that on her journey she lead a vegan lifestyle because he believes the purity of it will help strengthen her body to last a little longer. The cancer has also attacked her GI tract and he says it will help keep the tract cleansed and her body nourished to fight what she can.

I disagree with Jay. The vegan lifestyle is very healthy if done right. It is important, as Alicia states, to mix it up with beans, grains and veggies. Jay, I suggest that you do a little more research. Try reading Dr. Neil Barnard's books and take a look at Dr. Dean Ornishes' diet to save the lives of patients with heart disease, diabetes II and yes, even cancer. There are studies now available. Alicia has done her research on writing TKD. I am a retired RN and my husband is a practicing physician and we have both chosen to live a vegan lifestyle. We are in our 60's and are very healthy and happy that we made this informed choice. We both continues to read and improve our knowledge on this subject. I gentily suggest that you do your homework and save your life.

Alicia, I believe a vegan lifestyle is a good path to go on. Everyone has their own beliefs and opinions I know, but THEY can practice them themselves. Preaching so everyone can change is not going to help. if you're a meat-eater and know you could never go the route of a vegetarian or vegan path, so be it! Continue on on that way. IF however, you WANT to be vegan or vegetarian then go for that!

There is no forcing, only free will,.

Don't worry, Alicia, I BELIEVE IN YOU AND YOUR CRUSADE. :D

    Alicia,

I'm sorry, but a vegan lifestyle is not healthy for the human body. It deprives our physiology of the essential nutrients it needs. The human body and human race are still evolving, regardless of the advancement of the soul, spirit, or essense that occupies it/them. Unfortunately, our bodies still need the energy from the flesh of dead animals. We need these nutrients to build our brains so that they can better channel our minds/higher selves. It's sounds absurd, I know...but sadly...it's true. At this point in human history, the only thing we can do is limit our meat intake to a reasonable level so that fewer animals die. On the other hand, vegetarianism is okay, but veganism is NOT healthy. In the future, after the brains and DNA of man are fully developed and utilized, there won't be a need to devour flesh. Until then, moderation in terms of meat consumption is the right path. This point of view is subjective, though. Anyway, check out this interview on Coast to Coast. It's extremelely informative in regards to alternative health, and it provides an unique slant to standard thought.

wow. this comes at a perfect time (though i'm anxiously waiting for your thoughts on water filters). we are in the process of looking for a new place and are seriously talking about investing in a water filter. we just learned a little bit about the kangen system and i haven't had more time yet to research alkaline water (though i know organic ave that you mentioned in a previous post sells it with their juice cleanses). my inclination is that alkaline water would be really balancing since we're so acidic in our society, but should i switch out all my water w a filter or am i better buying 1 a day and just regular filtering my tap??? is it ok for babies? so many questions.

I think thats why its so important to do whatever we can to make our immediate environments as low-impact as possible, because the bigger world is really bad and its upsetting - when you really think about it it does seem insurmountable.

I love that there is a post on this topic - its so very important!

We can all do simple stuff, like making our bedrooms a "safe" haven by having no electronic stuff, no digital clock two feet from your head on the night stand, natural organic bedding, no synthetic carpeting etc.... - you figure you spend about 8 hours each day in this room, make it a place to have a break from the toxins you are around the rest of the day!

looking forward to checking out the links everyone is posting, and to future posts about this topic!
