My great friend, Alex Keeling-Thompson, who previously blogged about some amazing bedsheets that she found, wrote another blog for all of you. It is about her son's experience with getting off dairy, and how much it helped his health. I'm so proud of her story, and find myself telling it all the time. This is a good one for all of you mamas out there. Hope you all had a happy Mother's Day!! Take a look:

Maxime's Story
by Alex Keeling-Thompson

"My son Maxime (pictured above) was three when he developed a chronic cough. At first, it came on slowly and only at night, but over time he started coughing during the day. I took him to our pediatrician numerous times and they had no idea what was wrong with him. Finally, they recommended that I take him to a allergist. Great!!!! Anyone, who can help us! At this point, it had already been three months of 'take this cough medicine' or 'lets wait and see if it goes away after cold and flu season', and Maxime and I were exhausted. I thought the allergist would have all the answers...The first thing on my list was to ask them about the dairy in Maxime's diet. Maxime's pediatrician seemed unconcerned about the dairy and dismissed my concerns about it. Dairy was a huge part of his diet: the cheese sticks, cream cheese on bagels, yogurt and cheese crackers... and this was on top of the milk he drank everyday. Walking into the allergist's office I was confident he would say, "NO more dairy".

During this time, I was a fashion stylist in Los Angeles and had had wonderful conversations with celebrities, hair and makeup stylists and models about healthy eating and exercise programs. I loved to listen to people's stories on photo shoots about how to better your life through good nutrition. But no one influenced me more than Alicia when I met her in 2003 before the launch of her new TV show Miss Match. What was interesting about her was when I met her she really didn't talk about her diet right away. I knew she was a vegan because I had to pull clothing that would honor her vegan lifestyle, but other than that she wouldn't really talk about it.... Unless, you asked about it.... She was so lovely and would take the time to explain to me why certain foods were bad for you, etc. I will never forget that she gave the crew of Miss Match books about healthier eating, and she also gave them to me for my children.

It was around this time that Maxime had his cough, and my mother-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Our whole world was rocked, and my husband and I set out on a mission to read about healing through good nutrition. Alicia was there for us and told us about Mina Dobic's book, My Beautiful Life, and gave us other valuable information at the time. I was on my path to realizing the direct link to health and good nutrition.

This was around the time Maxime was at the allergist office. Finally, someone was going to tell me how to help my son. The doctor examined him and I asked him, "Shouldn't we stop all dairy?" He said, "Dairy's not the problem. The dairy is fine." "Really, Really, then what is it?", I asked him. Well the doctor didn't know at first, and told me to try some over the counter children allergy medicine. Another month goes by and we are back at the doctor's office. This time he suggests Maxime start taking nasal STEROIDS. I said, "Are you sure we shouldn't try going off the dairy first?" "No, it has nothing to do with it", he said. Being a good girl from the South who always listened to doctors, I got the prescription filled and was about to administer it when I read the warning label. The first thing the label said is that this drug may stunt growth if taken over a period of time. What? What?! That was the doctor's answer to my problem? Giving nasal steroid that may stunt my son's growth... I am 5'4 and my husband is 5'5 on a good day. We don't have any height to lose in our family. This wasn't the answer to his health issues!

The next day I had a meeting with the doctor and asked him, "How long do you want Maxime to be on this steroid?" He said for an extended amount of time and that he wasn't really sure. That's when I became open to using holistic doctors and combing traditional medicine with a holistic approach. The doctors Maxime had been seeing were some of the top doctors in Los Angeles and I don't fault them at all, but our family needed a different approach. Every instinct in my body told me not to give Maxime the steroid, and I am so happy that I didn't.

The next week a friend told me about an amazing doctor in Santa Monica, CA who dealt with allergy patients and took a totally holistic approach. Her name was Dr. Susanne Bennett and during our first office visit she gave me a whole new diet for Maxime. Top of her list was no dairy!!!!! No dairy, no yeast, no nuts etc., just for the first few weeks to find out what the culprit was, and also to get all toxic cleaning supplies out of our house.

At first, it was a challenge to cook differently and buy all new products at the store. I was working full time and I remember the first time shopping spending two hours at whole foods just reading labels. Ahhhh, it was taking forever and it was a whole new way of looking at food. But guess what? In two weeks he was better and in a month he had NO cough. I took all the dairy out of his diet and he was a changed child. He had been puffy in the face with dark circles under his eyes and now he looked great and had no cough.

I strongly urge all parents to first always trust your instincts when it comes to your children's health. Please before a doctor suggests medicine for a ADHD child or nasal steroid try taking dairy, sugar and processed foods out of the diet first. I can't tell you how many of my friends have their kids on medicines and I ask, "Have you ever tried taking the dairy and sugar out of the diet?" I'm not judging them but hoping that they will try healing through whole foods before medicine that only masks a problem. I wish and hope for a future where doctors spend more than two weeks in college on health and nutrition and wake up to the correlation of nutrition and health. That's why it was helpful for me to seek out a holistic alternative. My mother-in-law sought out traditional medical care for her breast cancer and changed her diet. Through those efforts and prayer, she is totally cancer free. Knowledge is really powerful and can help so many people in a health crisis. I thank Alicia for helping our family."

I love Alex and I love Maxime! I'm so happy that Alex wrote this blog"¦ She is the best mama, I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day my great friend!!

And are you kidding me with Maxime's cuteness? He has had to suffer the kiss attack me from many times. I miss him, as they live in Alabama now"¦

It makes me so angry that the professionals are blatantly lying to us when it comes ot our children's health! They don't even bother to research the real facts.

On the other side, I love holistic approaches. But can everyone afford them? no. Does everryone even know they exist? no. Medicaid needs to start supporting these types of practices for low-income folks.

i was a nanny a few years back for a little girl who was CONSTANTLY SICK with respiratory infections, etc and you should've seen the look on the mom's face when i suggested she try cutting dairy out of her diet to see what would happen. you KNOW what her pediatrician was pushing. the little one was just miserable most of the first two years of her life! the mother would have rather kept her on constant meds than do a little research into her child's health. her other child had TUBES PUT IN HIS EARS before age TWO!! because of the chronic ear infections he also had.
i think it's so ridiculous doctors have no clue about the basics of health. or is it something more? my almost two year old son has been vegan since conception and he hasn't been sick ONCE! when all the other babies around him are constantly suffering from something (ear infections, colds, runny noses, vaccine reaction (however minor), etc.) he's smiling away ready to play. i just think it's sad we have to be our own advocates for our children but we do, in order just to make sure they get the best start, not to mention the best out of their childhoods. i'm just SO grateful there are groups like this and so happy you post such cool stories alicia!

Because of various factors in how our foods are produced today, allergies are becoming more and more common and are not often enoughor quickly recognized as allergies. Here's another mother's story that became a crusade: http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2010/05/robyn-obrien-fighting-for-allergy-children/

What a wonderful story! We are in the process of getting dairy out of our home. I have a four month old who had horrible cradle cap and eczema the first two months of his life. His poor little head looked like a giant scab and was starting to crack and bleed. His back had red welts on it where the eczema was irritated and he also had it on his neck and on the back of his little legs. I caked on creams and tried everything, but nothing was working. I was desperate, so I decided to give up dairy. His skin was better in one week and completely clear and perfect in two weeks. Now he doesn't need any lotion at all and had beautiful, glowing baby skin! After my husband and I learned how dairy was effecting the baby, we are working on taking dairy out of our home for good!

My son was 10 when we finally realized his dairy allergy. He had countless numbers of ear/sinus infections and way too many antibiotics to count! We just did what we were told to do. That is until I read an article about dairy allergies. I spoke with Hubby and we decided to have him tested for allergies. Since taking him off of dairy, he has had not even one infection! He misses no more school! {due to the infection itself, followed by stomach upset from antibiotics} It was hard for him to adjust at first, and I make all of his food from scratch, but his health has improved! So much so, that our family is now completely dairy free!
Never trust the doctor's aadvice completely! Always second guess and look for second opinions! If we did that years ago, we could have saved our son years of pain and illness!

Welcome back to Alabama Alex and Maxime...!
ahhh, the south where pork and fried foods are abundant. smiley-surprised.gif
One cool thing though, is that we have a longer gardening season for those fruits and vegies !

My two year old has dry skin that only improves w/ hydrocortisone cream...stress!
I am thinking of cutting back on dairy after reading your thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

Patti - for more info on the fluoride question go to:

    http://www.fluoridealert.org/

there are lots of links at that site to research/articles regarding the safety (or lack thereof) of fluoride, and a great book on the subject ( it reads like a spy thriller!) is Toxic Deception - all about the history of this chemical and how it ended up in our water and toothpaste -

First off Maxime is totally adorable! Thank you Alex for sharing your story with us!
It's so wonderful that you kept fighting for your child and weren't willing to rest and allow the doctors to be the only voice. It's great that you followed your judgement and bettered your sons health. Where I live it's seems most people take the doctors word as final. Yes doctors went to school and studied things I certainly didn't but I know my body and the way I feel and that counts for something. It seems that many people believe that well "If the doctor said....." than that can be the only course of action. I do think that traditional medicine has a place, and there is definitely doctors out there that mean well but I do not take their word as final. It's best to research things for yourself, get a understanding of your health problems, look at what your eating and drinking- Basically look at the whole picture, not just take a med that will basically only mask the problem and could potentially lead to other health problem. This is just one more reason why I love this site, I love reading success stories like this and love being surrounded with caring, like-minded people.
Thanks Alicia for sharing Alex's and Maxime's story!

this is fantastic! i'm so glad she listened to her instincts! i've been allergic to dairy all my life and went through numerous tests, lost sick days, lost days in general when i was a young child. i had complications that caused severe pain. no one ever thought to question the dairy. i was given antibiotics for years. it wasn't until i was 25 that the doctors began suggesting a food allergy. i wish more people took this seriously.

This is a great story/example. I know people who would probably really benefit from cutting out dairy--or even just cutting back! But like luvmadevisible said, "spreading the good word gently" will, I hope, make an impression.

As an aside, Ann, I see you mentioned questioning the fluoride and I have noticed others in the forum making a point to state they bought the natural toothepastes without the fluoride. I hadn't heard about any ill effects with fluoride. What's the scoop?

    Thanks!

it's so great to see women questioning their doctors and following their guts! The number of little kids who I see who would so benefit from getting the crap outta their diets is amazing - and dairy is the worst because the whole industry bombards us with this propaganda about how milk/dairy is necessary for a child, doctors second that cry and we are left with a lot of sick kids (who turn into sick adults!). And they make you feel as if you are a bad parent for doing differently......its not just the dairy - question the fluoride, the sugar, the ever-increasing number of vaccines - don't buy the hype! Its got nothing to do with our children's health, and everything to do with the almighty dollar.......

This is a fantastic post... I thought dairy would be the hardest thing to give up on my journey toward becoming a full fledged vegan.. but it wasn't as hard as I thought & frankly, removing dairy from my diet is probably the single best thing I have ever done for my body. I had chronic sinus issues and allergies myself - and can now say I am completely allergy free. I also long for a day when doctor's embrace a more holistic approach to health and healing and view food as the medicine it really is. I lost my own mom to cancer more than 16 yrs. ago, and I find it so disheartening that there have (sadly) not been that many advances made in treating the disease. If the cancer does not kill you - the traditional treatments (radiation & chemo) certainly will... I read Mina Dobic's book as well and found it so inspiring... I try to spread the good word as gently as I can to anyone who is open to alternatives and will listen. I agree that knowledge is power... the information is out there - we just need to arm ourselves with it so we can make better/healthier choices for ourselves & our loved ones going forward!!
