movie to see: fat, sick, and nearly dead

Jan 5, 2012 at 12:00pm by Alicia Silverstone

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead - Official Trailer from Team Reboot on Vimeo.

Doug (you may remember him from my blog about Organic Avenue), told me about this great-sounding documentary called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.

The uplifting story follows a man named Joe Cross on a cross country road trip where he vows to do a juice fast for 60 days (consuming only fruits and vegetables in liquid form). On his transformative journey, he meets and inspires Phil Staples - a 420 pound truck driver from Iowa - to do the same.

You can stream or download the film here, and you can join Joe's online community Reboot Your Life here.

Have you seen it? What did you think? Have you seen any other inspiring films lately?

The health section is proudly sponsored by Kaeng Raeng natural detox. Make sure to check out their 3 or 6 day vegan detox programs here:

I agree with Maharlia Kennedy above. Forks over knives is inspirational and informative. There is a balance one needs to attain when trying to lose weight vs just going vegan. Going vegan is not a diet. I STRONGLY suggest you try and find a plant based nutritionalist if you need help planning out meals. I'm not a doctor but I will be mentoring people through a No Meat March campaign in Jacksonville, FL. I'm volunteering with a Health and Wellness center that will be providing a 30 meal plan and offering coaching. Many major cities may have their own NMM No Meat March campaing. PCRM.org is a great resource. One thing I've learned that is if you are not filling yourself with WHOLE FOODS full of nutrition and instead eat processed foods, the stomach and intestine receptors may not register that you are full. It is fun trying to come up with meals that have 3-5 ingredients and then add to them unique seasonings. One ingredient could be all the vegetables, another could be grains and a third could be legumes. I do drink green smoothies about every other day because I don't have time to eat as many vegetables as I'd like. Sorry to ramble.

Personally I managed to walk almost 5 hours one day this months, I realize that my weight problem is probably more something psychological but with all the drugs I'm taking it's useless to even think doing exercise or dieting, no balance give me the same weight and since a few days I'm so tired and breathless I would say I have a heart problem, adding to that the pain in the muscles, I feel like 90 years old... When I'm not dieting I rarely eat more than 2000 calories in a day... But I believe realizing there's a problem is 50% of the work, today when I watch myself on a glass I'm beginning to see I'm not unpleasant to watch....

LOVE this movie! So glad you posted it. It was such an important componant in the transformation of my diet. Juicing has given me more energy and a leaner body. I've since shared this movie with so many others who have changed their lives through juicing. It's so exciting! I even got my stubborn dad to watch it! Here is my post on it: http://ericainthecity.blogspot.com/search/label/documentary

I loved this movie! We have watched it and have shared this movie with everyone we can. We have also purchased a juicer and do juices for breakfast and lunch then a vegan dinner. I feel so great and its awesome seeing my family starting to eat this way. Its been a great way for them to ReBoot their system and work towards a more vegetarian/vegan diet.

I'm so excited that you wish to watch this documentary! I watch the first part almost every day to keep myself on track and inspired! Joe is so funny and friendly! You can watch the documentary on hulu legally and for free- http://www.hulu.com/watch/289122/fat-sick-and-nearly-dead I hope you watch it and start adding juice to your diet! It has AMAZING effects on your body! Right after I watched this documentary I was the happiest I have EVER been in my life! I had so much energy, I went to the gym and worked out for 3 and a half ours straight! And I ran for the longest I ever ran in a single time period. I was never able to run for longer than 3 mins straight and I ran 10 mins straight without pain! This documentary is NOT depressing at all and shows NOTHING about cruelty or factory farms! It's just about the joy of a pure, healthy lifestyle so it's really uplifting!!!

This documentary changed our lives. We immediately bought a juicer and started juicing everyday. My 5 year old daughter even drinks green juice once or twice a day! We have been vegan for almost a year now and this was the perfect compliment to our new lifestyle. My husband did a fast for 14 days and lost 16 pounds. We all feel so much better and I am so glad to know that my daughter is getting all the nutrients she needs!

I loved this movie! I decided a complete juice fast was too much for me so instead I ordered the Kaeng Raeng I saw on your site. I did six days at the beginner level and then from there went to a vegan lifestyle.

I watched the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary recently and I thought it was interesting. What I STRONGLY recommend watching though if you haven't done so already (and I'm not sure if it has been mentioned on The Kind Life before) is Forks over Knives - this is a brilliant, BRILLIANT documentary and truly motivational! The next on my list as soon as I can get a hold of it is Planeat.

Forks over Knives examines the claim that most, if not all degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, even reversed with a whole foods plant based diet.

If you have health concerns or know a family member or friend that does then this film is for you. If you 'flirt' with being a vegan and haven't made the complete transition and you're looking for motivation this film is for you. If you are a committed 'superhero' or anything inbetween, this film is for you. With no exaggeration this film changed my life!

We LOVE this whole FSND thing! My husband lost 30 lbs and got his groove back! He shaved a minute/mile off his running time and, when he's juicing, feels like he's 20 years younger. I was wondering when I'd see this on Kind Life. :)

How can I get this movie to watch? Is it for sale somewhere? Or at Redbox? I don't use Netflix.

      Thanks!

I recently watched this via Netflix and now I juice regularly to make sure I'm getting the nutrients I sometimes think I miss with food, since you can pack so much more into 16 ounces of vegetable and fruit juice - and it tastes great! I just bought a juicer online and it should arrive today so I can make my own and save $$$. I found the journey of these 2 men inspiring - especially when Joe helped Phil turn his life around and to see where Phil came from and where he got to, changing his body, his health, his work, his relationships with his kids - everything - it was truly moving. I understand the need to do work you feel good about and to see Phil find that and leave his trucker days behind and see him inspire others when he had been at such a desperately low ebb - well, I think about that any time I'm down. I can't recommend this documentary highly enough and am going to watch it again very soon.

I actually watched this movie a few days ago via Netflix. I've been toying with the idea of going vegan for over a year, and I'm just trying to become as educated and prepared as possible before I make the jump. This movie was truly eye-opening and inspiring, and even my hardcore meat-eating boyfriend was intrigued (he now wants to buy me a juicer, lol). It is amazing how the body heals itself when you treat it kindly. I also just watched Earthlings last night, and I found myself crying in disgust and sadness at the horrific things humans do to animals without even a care in the world. I would definitely recommend "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" to anyone who is looking to improve their health and the health of the planet.

Rebecca, when I fast I do it on fresh OJ mostly, sometimes only. I buy oranges by the case and you can usually get a good deal on them by the case if you ask the produce manager. So it's not as expensive as you think. Fasting is not about getting any nutrients, it is about releasing and detoxing what you don't need. Let's face it, none of us are starving (in the lack sense), although if you look at the SAD diet, even fat people can be starving for real nutrition. (fastingcoach.com)

I watched this film on AMAZON last year. It is amazing and definitely opened my eyes to fasting and juicing. I have since started reading the "Crazy Sexy Diet" book and am learning HOW food is digested and where. Am ready to start juicing today. Funny this was sent today also. YOU ROCK.

I watched this documentary about 6 months ago and couldn't stop telling people about it. My fiance and I now own a juicer (same one from the movie) and have added juicing to our regular routine a few times a week to get those yummy micronutrients to help our cells be strong and healthy. I love the idea of a re-boot. The problem is, buying enough organic produce to juice for 7 - 15 days straight is expensive. Erik and I will probably do one eventually.

This documentary is what led me to a healthier life (as cheesy as that sounds). I watched it and within 2 weeks I borrowed my moms juicer and went on a 10 day juice fast. After that, I didnt want to eat meat or dairy anymore. I found one day i was craving sundried tomatoes! I have been overweight my entire life so I could easily see myself in Joe and Phils shoes in another 10 years. Since October, I've lost 28 lbs and thats really just from being kind to my body, nothing extreme. I got the kind diet book for christmas and about 100 pages in. I love eating good foods and feeling GREAT! Lastnight I was walking my dog and broke out into a spontaneous run, that NEVER happens! I definitely recommend "Fat, sick and nearly dead' for anyone that needs a little inspiration.

I totally saw this a while back, it was truly inspiring and the truck driver, oh my goodness. I believe if one is at that point or has a serious illness it's a way to heal the body for sure. As far as an eating disorder, well, look at America as a whole. A new attitude is desperatly in need! Happy New year Alicia!

I watched this movie on Netflix last weekend and was unsure at first but a few minutes into I was drawn into the movie. I loved it and wa so inspired but both stories, the best part was that it was real they included all of the hard work it took instead of just presenting a miracle drink, they fasted for the entire time and put in hard work for amazing results. I want to try it!

I really love this movie. One of the best to share with friends and family. Michelle, I have had several patients who were nursing go on a juice fast. In one case the mother was nursing two children, wondering if her milk would diminish on a fast. It increased and the child who could speak said the milk tasted better! In another, the infant had chronic bronchitis, and he got better on the mother's fast.
