During a visit to see my mom for her birthday (I'll blog about this soon!), I snapped these pictures of her empty cosmetic containers. I've told you before how she always uses every last drop of her makeup and beauty products, so I wanted to share these pictures!

I mean come on! That's incredible, right? Does she win the contest for most thorough use of products on the planet, or what? Do any of you use your jars as well as this? Very impressive mom. Yay mom!

My mom does this too! We were taught well. It's catchy. I was teased growing up for much of the frugality and conservation in this home, but I'm so grateful I have the foundation of knowledge about what's important - and how much lotion is still in that tube!

Ha! Cool! Exactly what I have been doing for years too. I use a silicone spatula too to extract every precious drop of my lotions.

I conserve and use up alot of my makeup too.
Great idea. Very proud of everyone who does this.

I sometimes put water in the bottom of an almost empty container and swish it around to get the residue sticking to the sides, it works for everything--- mustard, ketchup, liquid soap, shampoo, or cans of tomato sauce (which become diluted tomato "juice"). Very thrifty. Also try depositing little pieces of soap in a little water and get instant liquid soap. Just like Ben Franklin, probably, waste not want not.

Yay for your mom!! I do this too- saves money and the environment!! I have also been trying to re-use empty containers by putting the homemade cosmetics in. Like masks and body scrubs.
LOVE IT!! Feels good to know you are doing your bit for the environment!! x

When I have just enough shampoo or body wash to do something with but not enough to cover my hair or wash my body, I cut open the bottle & put in the bathtub to make "bubbles." I do alot of sale shopping & sometimes i pick up shampoos or body wash's that I don't end up using what I bought them for (the scents aren't as good as I thought...or the suds were harder on my hair than I liked) & those also become bubble bath. I also use these "leftovers" to wash delicate fabric and "light' un-mentionables. These are just a few ways you can "recycle" products intended for one use...but that you can get more life from them.

Way to go, mom! Never thought of cutting the bottles open, though...thanks for the inspiration! I do try to use every last drop of my personal care products, which often involves me narrowly getting a finger stuck inside a lotion bottle. And it requires Hulk-like strength to squeeze that last little bit out of the toothpaste...but it works! And you wouldn't believe how much product is still left inside those tubes and bottles when the bulk of the public thinks they're "finished." Cheers!

Omg that is me! I thought I was weird for cutting open my bottles so as to waste none of my products. I do this with toothpaste tubes even.

I'm really glad you posted this. I need to do this! The thought never crossed my mind to cut the container in two and get the last bit out. Genious! : D

I also use, squeeze every last drop out of cosmetics, toothpaste, and that is awesome, too Alicia!

I can't believe, out of all the eco things I've done in my life and do daily, I've never cut open tubes and things, but I'm going to start asap, what a great idea!! One of my main strategies is to start at the very beginning: I buy very few products as it is. I make a lot of my own beauty products and keep any throw away-ables to a major minimum.

I have done this probably since high school when I started wearing make-up!! Still do and I actually just argued with my husband that the dish soap bottle still had plenty of washes if he would have just added some water! LOL

I do the same thing. I really like the stuff and want to get the most out of what I buy. Why be wasteful?

I most certainly cut open my tube products just like in the pic! It really is satisfying to get the very last drop.

Hehe! Me and my mum always do that too!! ;D And yes you´d be surprise by the lots of product still in there!

I too, thought I was the only one! About 4 years ago when my husband saw me do this for the first time, he had quite a good laugh. He thought I was nuts. Then over time, being the cheapskate that he is, he started thinking I was brilliant, because I was saving money. Too funny! I even have a special sissor I use for my products, as to not contaminate anything else.
