Good hair products are always hard to come by... and once you find ones that you love it's very comforting. Scott, a hairdresser that has worked with me a lot in the past, has recommended some great products. He was also kind enough to answer some other questions for me, which are at the end of this blog.

I just love Scott! He is such a great hair artist, and I feel so safe with him knowing that he only uses the best, kind products. He also has amazing hair"¦ and he's vegan! Take a look at what Scott recommends:

Giovanni was started by Arthur Giovanni, a Beverly Hills salon owner. Giovanni makes a full line of cruelty-free, organic and vegan products, and you can find them at Whole Foods. Everything from shampoos and conditioners, to styling and finisher products you can find HERE. I've been using a couple Giovanni products since I started my play, and they are great. One of the products, Vitapro Fusion, protects my ends from hairdryer heat, and the other is Shine of the Times Finishing Mist for calming down frizz, and smoothing funny fly-aways.

MOP (Modern Organic Products) makes Scott's favorites, the C-System. All organic and food-based ingredients, these products can be found in tons of salons and beauty supply stores. Use their locator to find a store near you.

Aveda makes tons and tons of products for every type of hair and hair need, it just depends on what you need. Their products aren't always vegan, but Aveda avoids chemicals when they can, and most of their products are derived from natural ingredients. My favorite Aveda product for my hair is the Volumizing Tonic. After I shower at night, I sleep on my damp, washed hair that I wrap into a loose bun. Then, in the morning, I spray a little of this on my hair if I'm going somewhere spunky, and my hair gets that tosselled and textured look.
Scott recommends some other products in this little interview that I did with him, and also talks about why he decided to go vegan:
What products do you use and why? What are your considerations when choosing products?
I use a variety of products depending upon my clients' needs, however I always try to use the conscientious choice as there is really no reason not to. Many of the larger companies have come a long way and adhere to cruelty-free practices and, in many cases, vegan or vegetarian ingredients. It just takes a little diligence to read the packaging and make the smart decision.
Bumble & Bumble makes a full line of cruelty-free products which are fantastic and with a few exceptions, mostly beeswax, they are vegan as well. The same goes for Aveda, but I have to admit that the fragrances are a little overwhelming sometimes. Giovanni and Jason, both carried at Whole Foods, are also terrific, but as with Aveda and other "natural" products, these have a more limited shelf life and last longer if refrigerated.
I also tend toward a natural alternative whenever possible. Pure shea butter makes a spectacular pomade. I use it for piece-y looks and to smooth frizziness. A little goes a long way. Pure aloe vera gel makes a great hair gel and when mixed with rosewater makes a great spray-on blow dry product. Adds thickness and shine with no alcohol! Also, glycerine and rosewater can take the place of serums to calm naturally curly hair and reduce frizz.
Why did you decide to go vegan?
I was raised in a very meat-friendly household, with more than one choice of meat for every meal. As soon as I left home as a teenager I became vegetarian, and have just naturally evolved into a vegan lifestyle from there. I was never a fan of my many meat options and have always been a lover of all animals, so it just seemed like the right trajectory for me. It certainly was a philosophical decision first and a health benefit by coincidence. I have now been vegetarian/vegan for over 40 years and have certainly reaped the long-term benefits in my health, weight control, skin, etc...I try not to be preach-y about it and always felt that did more harm than good. I try only to live by example and work to educate my friends, co-workers and clients gently and with love.
Hope this was helpful to you guys! I'd love to know what hair products you use. And if you try any of the products that Scott recommended, let me know how you like them!

I've been using ABBA which I like the result of, it shows to be good but has anyone heard anything negative about this?

may not be very helpful if your in the US but in Australia we have fantastic salon quality hair products called De Lorenzo. they are Cruelty Free Accredited, Vegan, plant based and organic certified. They make hair care and wonderful salon colours as well as their own developers. I have been interested to try WEN products however notice they are not cruelty free accredited ( as this is free i dont see why they would not apply if they meet the criteria). I noticed some comments that people had called their number and confirmed verbally that they contain no animal products or tested on animals however there was also confusion about operators thinking the question was if animals made the product. I would not be confident on that person knowing about animal cruelty frankly. I have emailed WEN and will advise if i get an answer.

The owners of JAM Vegan Bakery use Aubrey Organics vegan products, because they have no chemical fragrances, no SLS or other crazy chemicals, and the products make hair beautifully clean. The face cleansers are also virtually chemical-free, and most are Vegan!
For body wash, we use Dr. Bronners All-In-One, which are Vegan, Organic, and Fair-Trade! We love Ethically-made beauty supplies!

@Jennifer, even though this was over a year ago, just in case you happen to stumble upon this like I did, Renpure Organics is vegan. The only products that aren't are the ones that say "Silk Protein" on the front of any of the bottles. I use their Argan Oil shampoos and conditioner. I like it.

@ Allison Crane, I also use Wen by Chaz Dean. Just started last month. Love the way my hair looks and I only need to wash my hair every 3-4 days.

i use Chagrin Valley soap and shampoo bars..which are all natural, and most are vegan. but they make your hair AMAZING..unlike Lush, these do not contain sulfates and whatnot. they are a small family business located in Ohio but i think they ship everywhere..and, you can order sample sizes first to see if you like them. =D
http://chagrinvalleysoap.com check them out..they truly are awesome!

I have been using Wen by Chaz Dean, which is an all natural hair cleanser, so far I love it because my hair feels softer and my scalp seems cleaner, it is hard to describe, but it gives you a different feeling than regular shampoo. Has anyone else used this product?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good vegan hair color line. I am 32 and I have noticed that I am getting A LOT of grey hairs! Because of this, I have to get my hair colored more often. As a result, my hair that was once shiny and healthy, is now drab, dry, and has lost its natural shine. The other downfall to having my hair colored so often, is that it is soooo expensive...PLEASE HELP! :-)

Environmental Working Group Skin Deep cosmetic safety database gives ratings on all type of beauty products. It's scary to see how many products labeled organic and cruelty free are still so hazardous. Some Pureology products still have methylparaben in them and one rates a hazard of 9 on a scale of 1 to 10! -
Does anyone know if Renpure Organics is any good? Are they vegan? I know they don't have any sulfates/parabens/colors and dyes and say they aren't tested on animals but vegan I'm not sure. Any help?

I buy the John Masters ( they have a web site) in bulk - he sells HUGE bottles of the shampoo and conditioner, free shipping and no chemicals, no animal testing, organic....and most important - they are great products! So its like $60 for my conditioner....but that huge bottle lasts me more than 6 months! and, may I add, even if it didn't, I am SO worth spending money on myself to avoid these dangerous chemicals....I'm just sayin'.......I would rather cut out other costs in my life. -
I absolutely love Pureology. It takes a chunk to buy it in bulk, but ponying up the dough that way is more cost-effective in the long run, and it's so concentrated you only need to use a tiny bit. -
I've used Pureology before. It is excellent just a little pricy like you said. I love the smell of the their products too! -
I am a hairstylist and I use as much Pureology as possible! I love the Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner the best. Pureology is all vegan, not tested on animals, sulfate free (won't fade color), and organic. I can tell a difference with how the hair feels after one shampoo! These products last forever because they're concentrated so you don't need to use as much. I also love the styling products.. especially Texture Twist and Blowdry Amplify. It's a little pricy... (shampoo and conditioner is about $25 a bottle) (styling products are between $18-$22) but it's soooo worth it!! -
We have David Babaii products readily available right down the street :D I just started using his styling products. I'll look into the shampoo n conditioner as well. I'll look into Giovanni as well.
Thanks for all the suggestions and info everyone. -

I found a shampooconditioner at Ulta called David Babaii for Wildaid. It smells really great! It is 100% cruelty free and evens says it on the bottle. It is Sulfate and Paraben free and color safe! 10% of profits go to WildAid too. O and totally VEGAN to boot. -
The MOP products have a lot of toxic chemicals in them. A lot of "organic" products do. I've been told that although Aveda products have some toxins (parabens, sulfates, etc), they are all natural and plant derived. So I guess that's better than man made...
Thoughts? -
i love love love using calben pure soap. It is the ONLY cleaning products I use in my house and body! (well, of COURSE I use baking soda as well)
I Use the....
Glass GlowLaundry SoapDish SoapBar SoapHair Shampooand I may be missing one!
Try it out, www.calbenpuresoap.com
Definitely obsessed!
Made for the 3rd planet closest from the sun =) -
nvey eco make-up is all certified organic, i haven't done enough research to know if it is vegan- but i'll ask our salon rep and let you know what is, and what isn't. -
Try Kevin Murphy products, everything other than the "Protection Line" (in the protection line, they use crustaceans) all of there other products are paraben and sulphate free as well. And, for every can of "session spray" (their version of 'aerosol' hairspray) that a client purchases they plant a tree. -

Has anyone tried the product WEN? I have really funny hair, very fine, dry and curly. The WEN products have worked great for me. I am not sure if they are vegan or not, but will check their site next!! -
When I was checking out Aveda the customer service person sent me a list of products that were Not Vegan, and what they contained that kept them off the vegan list.Volumizing Tonic contains honey.I'm wondering if this has changed?
