Once upon a time, my husband's favorite treat was Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream. I want him to have his treat for Father's Day - but kind-style! Does anyone know of a good vegan alternative to this? Is there a veg Heath Bar I could mix up with an awesome veg ice cream? Or is there a Ben & Jerry's like vegan ice cream company I don't know about? Help!

I found from this site http://aveganlife.blogspot.com/2006/02/i-emailed-ben-and-jerrys-and-they.html where someone nemed Allie Byrne emailed Ben and Jerry's about making a vegan icecream and this is the response she got.
I emailed Ben and Jerry's and they responded within a half hour!
Here is the question I sent to them via their online form:
Customer (Allie Byrne) - 02/17/2006 01:04 PM
I recently just went vegan, and I must admit
that your ice cream was the hardest thing for me to
give up. Is there any way that you could make
vegan ice creams, using soy milk and etc in place
of dairy and eggs? Living in Vermont, its very
hard to resist your ice cream and you always have
had the best flavors and ideas. I know you have
vegan sorbets, but I've never seen a grocery
store carry them. I think this would be a wonderful
addition to the Ben and Jerry's line of
products.
Here is the response I got:
Response (George) - 02/17/2006 01:53 PM
Hello:
Thank you for contacting us about making
a non-dairy frozen dessert product. We appreciate the
opportunity to respond.
We have received requests for soy-based
or rice-based alternatives to dairy products,
and we're
happy to consider them. For the time being,
however, we have decided to continue with our line
of milk-based products, with the exception
of our sorbets, which are dairy-free and making a
return to grocery store pints this spring.
While we do recognize the environmental claims for
vegetable products, we are strongly committed
to supporting the small family dairy farms of
Vermont, feeling that their survival is
crucial to maintenance of Vermont's scenic beauty and
the vitality of its rural communities.
We have not ruled out introducing a non-dairy line of
products in the future. We are keeping
track of requests we receive, however, and will be glad
to keep yours on file for periodic review.
Thank you for taking the time and caring to write.

from post to post got more jealously because of all the vegan food options you've at the US... in germany you've to do it your self. that's what i do...
pls have a kind look at my blog

Sorry for being a bit off-topic. I just picked up on the Father's Day aspect. And my post is just something few would think about... It is a far cry from ice cream. LOL!

This is something that I hope not to get any flack about, but I'm just being realistic. MANY men LOVE guns. They have been a fascination and hobby of both mine and my father - for all his adult life. There's a plethora of things most gun owners really want, but don't have, or won't buy for themselves due to the expense.
This isn't an easy one, because you've really got to listen and pay attention to every word. Maybe it's a new holster. Concealed carry is extraordinarily popular today. Maybe he has a cheap nylon one, but has been admiring a soft leather one from afar for years.
The catch: There's sooo many different types - you don't want to get the wrong thing. Listen, listen, listen... Get him to show you ones he likes. Be clever as to how you approach this. Try asking what he'd recommend for YOU. It'll likely get him talking about what HE likes and wants. You know how... If you get him to a catalog or online to show you, you just hit paydirt.
A late "special" gift WILL be appreciated! If like my father, the one I knew he REALLY wanted set me back $150. It was worth every cent just to see the look on his face!!!

I would adapt the recipe of the heath bar found on this site: http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Heath-Bars/
substituting as follows (below)
chocolate chips (1 or 2 bags should be fine) 2 cups (1 pound, 4 sticks) of butter 2 and 2/3 cups granulated sugar 1/3 cup water1/4 cup light corn syrup
2 or more bags Sunspire (vegan and grain sweetened) choc chips
2 cups Coconut butter/oil
3 cups Maple sugar (syrup might not solidify as well)
- omit the 1/3 d cup water
1/4 cup brown rice syrup
Once chocolate covered bars have been cooked and cooled I'd cut them up and add them to your favorite dairy free/sugar free vanilla ice cream, swirling in a coffee substitute syrup as follows:
1/2 cup hot water
1/4 cup grain coffee
1/4 cup maple syrup
1Tbsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. almond extract
Recipe might take some tweaking, if so then so little time left to prepare.

I'm going to annoyingly suggest one more time that an ice cream freezer is the ideal toy for this-but like all good questions it has started me thinking about getting back into making frozen dessert.
The NE has a heat wave coming according to the weather wizards so it's the right time. I have an old style wooden ice cream maker but the salt ice mix can be messy. There are ice cream makers out there now that don't require ice-see this one for example. I have seen hand cranked ones that are small and like the one in the link don't require that messy salt/ice mix. But I'm not finding any though search right now.
I just believe that making frozen delights yourself can be a lot of fun and lends itself to a lot of experimentation too. It's all good.
Happy Dad's day and happy summer to all the kind family here!

This is what you need...
Coconut Bliss Brand in Cappuccino, + Toasted Slivered Almonds + Chopped Dark Chocolate + Raw Caramel Sauce
Raw caramel sauce: In a Vitamix or other strong blender, combine:
- A few medjool dates, soaked for 15-20 minutes
- 1/4 c. Raw Agave (or Brown Rice Syrup if you're trying to be SUPER healthy)
- Dash Himalyan Crystal Salt
- Splash coconut milk
- 1 Tbs. coconut oil
Blend until smoot, slowly adding oil last to emulsify
Combine all and enjoy :)
It's especially epic if the caramel sauce is warm.
The salty caramel and almonds combine for the sweet, salty, crunchy Heath effect.

I would add some of these http://www.lagustasluscious.com/shop/caramel-and-toffee/heathen-toffee to some Mocha Almond Fudge! That would be pretty perfect, I think.
-
I too adore making frozen banana ice cream...very healthy, u can eat all u want...adding in frozen strawbs is great...even topping w/vegan choc sauce...but it will never compete w/store bought, if that's what ur looking to replicate at this moment.
-
I'd combine So Delicious coconut versions of Mocha Almond Fudge w/Turtle Trails or Butter Pecan...most likely TT. I'd also get him some vegan vanilla chewy caramels from www.allisonsgourmet.com

Hi Alicia! I've been brainstorming the answers to your questions all night and day today( since I am a sincere "Kind Lifer" and take anything from you to heart--I love to blog!), I've thaught about the the recommendations for you and they are:
Create a raw vegan ice cream made with these raw chocolate caramel desert type things-I've seen a recipes on you tube through the "Supreme Master Television" and then you could make an ice cream from the cookbook "Sweet Gratitude". I have this raw vegan and gluten free desert book, everything SOoooooooo delish and they're even much more funner to make!!
You could use frozen bananas with chocolate and agave to give the chocolate caramel effect. This vegan ice cram would be really sweet though, yet still wonderfully delicious.
You can make your own vegan chocolate's or caramels or make your own vegan chocolate caramel bar...I even thought that you could use homemade chocolate peanutbutter cups and just substitue the vegan peanutbutter cups for the chocolate and caramel flavors.
You could also make frozen soy yogurt or ice cream and put in espresso or coffee if you like it without so much caffine...since it is a dessert type thing.
or there is vegan ice cream with espresso, it's called an 'affagato' in Italian and just put homemade or vegan chocolate(s) with your own homemade vagan caramel.
Basically the options are endless...to make the chocolate you could also use regular or raw carob powder to reduce the caffine by replacing chocolate with carob powder...it will still be great!
Well anyways, don't worry, it it's from you I'm sure it will be wonderful. Just create the recipe with your heart and it will turn out delicious. Maybe you can post your recipe. Oh yeah, your ice cream email got me into making my own VEGAN ice crem and frozen yogurt...I've decided I'm going to listen to my concious since its been telling me to be totally vegan...I just can't tolorate the dairy at the yogurt shops...I'll have to resist dairy frozen yogurts and ice creams and stick to kind lifer and vegan options.---Well, wish me luck...and I wish you luck too.
Sincerely,
Julie Swartout :-)
Happy vegan everything :-)

I am not sure if you can buy this in the States but if you are ever in London you HAVE to find a stockist for Booja Booja ice cream - it's unbelievably good (and mostly raw!)
http://www.boojabooja.com/ice_cream.asp
I am fairly certain they employ some kind of witchcraft to make 4 ingredients taste like 'real' ice cream!

I have tried coconutbliss nondairy frozen dessert, Stephie...it's a good vegan alternative to ice cream...
I am amazed at the suggestions and ideas on here trying to help Alicia with her Father's Day dilemma...:) I don't have a suggestion, as I have retrained my taste buds...lol...to like plainer but healthier food items...my version of a kind ice cream would be to blend in an organic banana with organic soy beverage to make a sort of smoothie...not ice cream but oh well...lol

I haven't tried it myself, but discovered a vegan "Heath Bar" recipe here!

I am excited about spending the summer with this recipe book which has vegan, soy-free, sugar-free ice cream recipes: http://www.thespunkycoconut.com/2012/05/dairy-free-ice-cream-cookbook-released.html
-
If you are willing to put a little work into making the dessert yourself, you can make your own version of Ben and Jerry's.
For the icecream base, here is a nice chocolate coffee recipe:
http://freeeatsfood.com/2011/09/09/vegan-coffee-ice-cream-with-chocolate-chunks/
Instead of adding the chocolate chunks in the recipe above, you can add your own homemade vegan English Toffee squares. One recipe you might use is as follows:

Happy Father's Day!

Hi Alicia,
Try making your own. A Cuisinart ice cream maker makes it fun and easy. I can email you a recipe for coffee ice cream made with cashews, coffee and pure maple syrup. Just let me know. Here's my email: emily at emilywebber.com. Here's a link to Allison's toffee candy for a yummy add-in: http://www.allisonsgourmet.com/vegan-confections-fudge/vegan-toffee.html.
-
I found this place that is on Sunset. It is vegan and raw and has a mocha flavor and a coffee flavor. You could get the coffee flavor and whip in some vegan toffee with your mixer.
http://www.kindkreme.com/menu.html
I hope this helps!

I would start with Luna & Larry's Cappucino for the coffee flavor and the creaminess, and then I would add in the crushed almonds listed in the ingredients for a Heath Bar. Then you could try mashing up a Go Max Go Twilight bar (covered in rice-milk chocolately coating; layered with thick, buttery-tasting caramel - like english toffee!). I can almost always find them at Whole Foods in the candy section.

Good luck, Alicia!

I know a couple of vegan coffee ice creams, but none with a heath-like add in, hmm..
but my favorite coffee flavored one is So Delicious Mocha Almond Fudge.. it comes in a coconut milk based variety, almond milk based, as well as soy milk based
Luna & Larry's makes a Coconut Bliss variety called Mocha Maca Crunch also, which is coffee, chocolate, with cacao nibs and maca.. that might be a good option too ( http://coconutbliss.com/coconut-bliss-products/mocha-maca-crunch ) -
Make your own using frozen bananas and a Yonana machine. http://www.yonanas.com/
I haven't seen a Coffee Heath Bar recipe, but I might have to experiment. Even with plain bananas, the "ice cream" is sooo good.
