New Year's Day can be less of a holiday and more of a hangover day for a lot of people. So in honor of NYE recovery day, I'm sharing my Cure All Tea recipe from my book (p. 290).
Cure All Tea
Ingredients
- 1 kukicha tea bag (if you're using loose-leaf tea, follow the package instructions)
- 1/4-1/2 umeboshi plum, pit removed and chopped very fine
- 3-5 drops shoyu
Steps
- Steep the tea in 1 cup of boiling water
- While the tea steeps, place the umeboshi plum into a teacup with the shoyu
- Pour the hot tea over the umeboshi plum in the teacup and stir well
- Drink hot
- The umeboshi pit is also good to suck on if you want
Also, remember when you have a hangover, you might think you want a bunch of heavy junk the next day - but the cleaner you eat, the better you will feel quickly. Green juice, brown rice, or steamed greens like kale are great hangover foods. But in my ancient party days, I noticed a huge difference between a veggie burger and fries and cakes versus the clean food.
What are your favorite hangover cures?

Water, lots of it, and organic potato chips, plain.
Rehydrates, balances lost electrolytes, and later, orange
juice, fresh-squeezed.
I was never much for drinking, but on the handful
of occasions when I overdid, this was a big help. -
I'm wondering where to get the whole plums? None of the health markets here in Portland, Maine have them. I did get the pickled whole umeboshi plums (Eden brand), but they are so salty I didn't know if they would count! thanks!

Coconut water has a lot of potassium. It's best to drink it before you go to bed. Doesn't completely help the stomach situation, but definitely helps with headache.

Kombucha is my favorite hangover cure. In fact, I bring ottle of it with me to the party - that water I've had a couple of drinks and am feeling my buzz, I have a glass of Kombucha to bring me back down to earth. Its a liver detox which makes it the perfect antidote to alcohol.

Yes you can use tamari as a substitute or in addition to. In Japan they sell a drink called Umesho that is shyou and umeboshi you can mix in hot water for a tea that is very alkalizing. They call it a "pick-me-up". Kudzu tea is even more alkalizing and soothing after consuming alcohol or too many sweets has been a terrific hangover cure and remedy for many folks I've given it to, even people who eat terribly. It's a powerful drink. For mail order resources that might be a tad easier to come by and less costly than Whole Foods, please see my links at www.SusanMarque.com Be well!

@Nicole: You should be able to find Umeboshi Plums and Ume plum products at Whole Food or your local health food store. I found Ume plum paste in the 'Macrobiotic' section of my Whole Foods but, unfortunately, they don't carry the whole plum which has different healing properties.

That tea sounds wonderful Alicia I have to remember to purchase some of those items.
thanks for the recipe.

My cure would definately have to be drinking LOTS of water-- it hydreates you fully and it is probably the best!
I would also like to try umeboshi plum. Can you find them at Whole Foods?

I have found the Cure All Tea to be very helpful anytime I'm just feeling physically blah. I also just like to drink roasted Kukicha tea on its own when I feel I need some balance.

Alicia, your Cure All Tea sounds delicious, not just for hangovers, but just as a wonderful tea to have before bed. I can't wait to try it. Thank you.

Alicia, I read your book quite a while ago, a friend is borrowing it now. I was just wondering what you do to work out? Yoga? I could not remember if you mentioned anything in your book about that. I'm 38 as of Dec 23 and want to keep looking young. My fiance is a lot younger than me so he is my motivation besides my care for my well being.

@Adam - I think you need the plum or the paste. The vinegar, while great for you, probably isn't as potent. imo.
@Esperanza - Unfortunately no. Not the same medicinal/alkalizing properties. If you are looking for a cure, coconut water or lemon water will help alkalize as well.
Happy New Year,

You can find a lot of Kind Diet ingredients, including umeboshi plums and a variety of teas, at Asian food stores. And they're usually not too expensive there. :)

I've found almost everything I can't locate in my home town in Amazon's grocery store (although the prices are sometimes prohibitive). :-)

I live in Wi. But if you have Health Huts there or other health food stores they carry the tea. I can't find the plums though, or at least I can't afford the ones I have seen!

@Angela - are you near a Whole Foods Market or Asian market of any kind?
You can also order online

I have no clue where to look for or find umeboshi plum or kukicha tea. Not finding them in the stores I shop in her in Georgia. Any help?

I LOVE umeboshi and wonder how I survived 33 years without it. So glad it's part of my life.
