During Thanksgiving, my family ate a lot of naughty vegan treats. We had sugary desserts and other veg dishes that are yummy but not very healing or nourishing. At the end of the week, we crashed, and said, no more! So, what did I make to bring us back to our superhero ways?
Alicia’s Post-Thanksgiving Detox Soup
I made miso soup from ingredients I had in the house: celery, bok choy, light and dark miso, carrots, leeks, dried shiitake mushrooms soaked and sliced (very healing), scallions, and cilantro. I had pre-chopped the scallions and cilantro. I keep them in a little glass jar to use whenever I need a garnish. It saves time! We also had some sweet rice mixed with short grain rice. It was nice with a little homemade gomasio. This is all I ate all day, and I felt so much better. It tasted so good and healing.
Introducing Bear to Almond Butter
I gave Bear some leftover tempeh and an apple. I also made him a rice cake (without salt). I added some almond butter and a tiny bit of brown rice syrup. He loved it. He kept saying mmmm! We just introduced him to almond butter at 1.5 years old. I think it’s good to wait until then for nut butters. Tahini is okay earlier on. I also made him some nori rolls with almond butter and rice. He had that along with some bok choy sautéed in sesame oil.
That’s it! We had a day of healing, simple superhero food to get back to normal and heal from the sugar devil!

that sounds like such a delicious soup! can't wait to try it. when I need to detox I like to drink lots of green tea and ginger tea. I also try to get in a good run and eat copious amounts of greens juiced or in a smoothie with berries and nondairy milk :-) -
I really love this website, your very inspiring!
I'd love to make the almond butter and rice nori rolls your talking about, it sounds really good.
Did you just make that up? -

I try to eat better these days anyway, Alicia, but to detox, I drink a lot more water, eat fresh fruit and veg, brown bread instead of white, and avoid alcohol, fried foods and sugary stuff. Have a lovely day, peeps and of course, Alicia! xo. -
Crystal, Alicia mentioned in her book that a lot of the restaurants use extra salty and or MSG in them. I noticed the difference when I first made mine. I added a couple of shakes of Himalayan salt. The soup wasn't bad per se but like you my taste buds have become used to that extra salty variety from the restaurants. Something I'm sure we can adjust to -
I'll start (or end) the day with broccoli, brown rice, and miso. If I need a little extra help after that I'll eat an umi plum. But for me, overindulging will mean a piece or two of super dark chocolate, grain-sweetened chocolate, or 1-2 whole grain cookies I baked myself. I really avoid white sugar and too many flour products, even whole grain, because you're right, you really do feel lousy after eating them.
I'll have to try some of the snacks you've offered Bear to my daughters. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Warmly,
Kuwanna -
We like to do mini juice fasts (from organic, freshly juiced fruits and veg that we juice ourselves) but this miso soup sounds like a much tastier way to detox!! I am obsessed with miso soup.

I love miso soup when we go to sushi restaurants but never have luck making it at home. What kind of miso is best and how much do you add? -

I've been wanting to make homemade nori 'sushi' rolls with short grain brown rice, carrot, cucumber, avocado, and asparagus. What is a good way to incorporate some protein in it? Or would a side of miso soup be good with a little tofu in it to accompany it? -

Okay, there is nothing I hate more than mushrooms. Is there something else healing I could substitute for them? -
Oh this soup sounds amazing! I think most of us ate way to much over the Thanksgiving holiday. This soup looks like it is so nourishing. Thanks!
