Hi Alicia,
I really want to raise my future children on a Kind Diet but am afraid that they will grow up short in comparison to their counterparts!I know they will probably be healthier but height ( for men) is unfortunately rather important these days and it's well accepted that mankind's increased consumption of meat has led to us being taller.
Please advise!

My question is the same as Jessica's about giving a baby milk after breastfeeding ceases. My husband was raised on milk and thinks its crazy that babies don't need milk after a year. Its all our niece and nephew drink! I'm curious as to what kind of milk you would give to Bear, if any, after you stop nursing. If not milk, what other drink would you recommend for a young baby? Thank you!!

I'm so excited that you're doing this, Alicia! I was frightened away from doing a vegan diet during pregnancy by my doctor. Now, knowing more, I really wish that I'd stuck by my guns. I now have a friend contemplating pregnancy, and she's nervous at the prospect of staying vegan, too. I've forwarded your link to her.
Just a side note on concerns about iron deficiency. Quite often, an iron deficiency isn't indicative of a lack of iron in our diets at all. Our bodies require iodine in order to process iron, otherwise it just flushes through our system without assimilating. The food which contains the perfect balance of iron/iodine is unsulphered black strap molasses (unsulphered to prevent uncomfortable gas/bloating). I love a teaspoon of molasses in my morning oatmeal, although while I was morning sick I will confess the smell bothered me a bit.

I also want to know how to handle food aversions. I was vegan for 6 months before getting pregnant, and all I could seem to eat was cheese. It was really hard for me to eat much of anything that was good for me. It all made me soooo nauseous!!!

My husband and I are planning to make a go at one more baby in October. I really want to be more than prepared before the pregnacy so there is less anxiety about it during that time. I basically would like to know what's the best resource for all my pregnancy needs that I can carry with me or keep close by whenver I need a diet reference? Also how a vegan diet truly compares to a western diet during pregnancy? Is there any new research on the subject? Looking forward to chatting with all of you.

I'm 8 weeks pregnant, and am finding that almost no foods are appetizing (smoothies and PB&J on whole grain bread have been my go-to meals). I'm still eating enough calories, but worried I'm not getting enough protein. Do I really need the 60-75g daily recommended during gestation? That seems like a ton.

I've heard conflicting reports on barley tea during pregnancy?? Also Kombucha Tea. I'm enjoying them both so far and I'm 25 weeks with my third. Any thoughts?

I'd love to hear more on iron and pregnancy-- my iron is low even though I eat loads of iron... and I already know to eat my iron rich foods with vit c containing foods to boost absorption and already take a vegan pregnancy multi-vitamin that contains iron... any other tips?
Did you take supplements?
Also, in what ways do you recommend dealing with food aversions and morning sickness? What do you do when food aversions interfere with getting certain nutrients? And when they continue throughout the pregnancy?
Thanks!

Did you feel pressure do eat meat or dairy when people found out you were pregnant? Any specific incidents you can recall?

In lieu of WIPES, when my 6'2" boy was a baby, as often as possible I used wash cloths . . . polka-dotted for his face, and plain for his bottom, with a water spritzer at the changing table. Granted, some "messes" call for disposable wipes, but for a large part we avoided the extra expense and waste of wipes. I'm surprised that I rarely see this idea, so here it is!

Alicia - first off, thank you for changing my life! I now have a 9 month old boy who I'm still nursing but am curious on what types of "milk" you plan on introducing Bear to when the time comes. Are hemp, almond, rice, coconut, and soy all safe for babies over a year to put in bottles in place of cow's milk? Any tips would be great. Thank you!

When I was expecting the first time I was still eating meat and a not so kind diet. I still have my child eating meat. But the meat comes from a family friend who owns a farm. I am doing this for my husband who also eats meat. We want her to make up her mind when she old enough to do so. But now I may be expecting for the 2nd time. Because I am no longer eating meat, will this hurt the baby if I feed them meat when they are of age?

I am a new mom of a 3-month old baby boy. I breastfeed, but need to supplement with formula. A recent news story talked about high levels of arsenic in brown rice syrup, a main ingredient in many organic baby formulas. What are your thoughts on this and what kind of formula would you recommend for kind-lifers who need to supplement or are unable to breastfeed?

Do you use reuseable diapers? Should we be afraid of them? Any tips to make the diaper/cleanups more manageable? Have you found something kinder or more economical than baby wipes?

Oh, this makes me so happy! I just found out I am pregnant. I plan on having my baby at a natural birth center that offers CNM and is located within a hospital (I live in a apartment, not interested in having a homebirth) because of information I found on TKL. I watched The Business of Being Born and found it very inspiring. My girlfriends thought I was crazy when I told them the births looked so much easier than in those scary birth shows on TV, it actually made me less scared.
My first question I'd like to see answered is about vegan snacking... Im about 5-6 weeks and only seem to be interested in snacking... sitting down for meals is a waste because once I'm a few bites in I'm not hungry anymore. I was thinking about kale chips, making some hazelnut chocolate butter in my vitamix for toast, and maybe rice cakes. I also love the toast with avocado and saurkraut you mention in TKD...actually craving saurkraut is what made me take a pregnancy test! But I was looking for some more ideas.
My second question is...what kind of products did you find helpful after you had your son? I want to give my child a good environment to thrive in, and my pregnancy wasn't planned so I don't know what I should do. What kinds of toys, activities are ideal? And for body care, I am curious about the kindest baby hygiene products. I've seen California Baby at WF and Target.
I have found your other blogs helpful in regards to nutrition and breast feeding, so I thank you for taking the time to gather information and share with us! I love this site! For now I am taking my pre natal vitamins and DHA, sleeping more, drinking lots of water, and staying active in school and at work. I look forward to enjoying my pregnancy.

I just recently had a baby. He's 5 weeks old today. I'm nursing and would like to know more about how to follow a kind life diet while getting enough essential nutrition for my baby. Is there anything different or extra I should be doing while nursing? I also want to learn more about losing the baby weight safely. Any tips? Looking forward to the chat!!! :)

What are the supplements a vegan should take during pregnancy? DHA-3? B-12 sublingual? Prenatal vitamins...? {Note: this is especially important for the first trimester when battling nausea and definitely not able to "eat the rainbow" of veggies and whole foods.}
