stop the abuse in conklin dairy farm
Kind Lifer M.J. recently sent me a message telling me about some horrible things going on at Conklin Dairy Farms. This farm is based out of Ohio and they were caught on video by Mercy for Animals beating and abusing cows.
It makes me so sad. PLEASE read about this issue further on The Huffington Post. Also please watch this video that shows what went on... But be warned, this might be very hard to watch:
One of the men shown in the video was fired from Conklin Dairy Farms and arrested and charged with 12 counts of animal cruelty. However, the owner of the farm himself, Gary Conklin, is apparently one of the other men in the video, and his dairy farm is still actively run and managed by him! Olivia Wilde also told me about this case while we were in Shreveport shooting the movie "Butter" recently. The sad thing is this is not an isolated case - this is the norm with dairy farms. What you can do to try and make this stop!
- Write directly to Gary Conklin, owner of Conklin Dairy Farms, and tell him how much it disturbs you to hear and see things like this and that it needs to stop immediately.

- Sign this petition online at Change.org, which is going strong with over 42,000 signatures and will be sent to local and state representatives in Ohio.

OMG - absolutely friggin' DIS.GUS.TING!!!! I didn't want to watch this video originally as I thought it was just going to be some bleeding/pussy udders (which is also awful) but this is just so violent - my stomach is just churning with revoltion! But why is this 'the norm' for the dairy industry? Isn't this just a case of some dispicable human beings engaging in outrageous behaviour? Sure not all dairy farmers are like this (and it would be unfair to label them this way). Isn't it like parents or pet owners who abuse their kids/pets - i.e. you put everyone in the same category?

Absolutely unacceptable! I am so disturbed and disgusted, I can't even think straight! How can anyone in their right mind hurt an innocent animal?! Not to mention, a baby? These people should clearly be locked away, preferably for life! And we definitely must consider, what these type of personalities are capable of doing to children as well... Anyone with such violent behavior, is obviously a danger to society in every way!
I've been wanting to covert from vegetarian to vegan, but this is it! I am going vegan for good, and NEVER looking back - starting now! Goodbye butter, it was fun while it lasted... Hope you understand, that I cannot support the cruel dairy industry. For let's face it, it will never truly change! I would rather spend my money elsewhere, and not give it to these perverted abusers! Not even a penny... I can be just as greedy and stubborn, as all the money-hungry big-shots, who don't give a crap about animal welfare, just to save a buck! Together, I believe we can give them a taste of their own medicine! So let's join forces, and not waste another minute!

I come from working on a farm, picking corn, hauling hay & straw cleaning the barn after the cows ect. I haven't been able to stop weeping after watching 15 seconds of the video. We NEVER treated the animals like that.
I signed the petition. I fear to think what these men do to their wives and children and if they are "church goin' folks".
Cheryl H, I thought the same thing, get a cow prod and zap those men in the nads or gabbed with a steak fork, while being tied to a pole by the nose but being a good christian girl I truly believe that we can't do anything worse to them then what will be their judgement when God (or whoever you believe in) has their day with them. Call it what you will but no bad deed DOESN'T go un-punished.

This is just so sickening, I just don't understand how these people can do this and then get away with it. I wish i could sign the petition but i'm in Australia so it didn't work. Keep up the good work and i hope you get a result.

I creid so bad while watching this. It just broke my heart. It was like wittnessing someone abuse my dogs. I honestly hope we can work together to change this. Thanks so much for posting this, eventhough it was very, very hard to watch, I am glad I got the chance to sign the petition.

I just tried to sign the petition, and I received an e-mail saying that the Ohio prosecutor's address is no longer valid. Did anyone else have this problem?

I live in Ohio. So this makes me extra upset knowing this is happening right in my own backyard. I put this on facebook for my friends to see. They are upset, but don't seem to be taking it to heart like me. The sad thing is we are having our state fair right now. If this farmer isn't in jail, he is there showing off his cows with love. The thought of that makes me sick. I only go to the fair to see the animals. Now I really am hurt to think about how most of them are being kept.

I ran into your comment where you asked if there are other organizations who are actively helping expose and stop abuses on animals. The ones that came to mind are www.mercyforanimals.org and United Poultry Concerns.
On a side note it was really great to see Mercy For Animals undercover footage several months ago shown on ABC Nightline or World News--one of the two. I wasn't happy about the abusive footage of course but so grateful that a large station actually cared enough to air it.
Together we CAN and WILL make a difference! Not even ten years ago would exposing this barbaric abuse in dairy farms would be shown on T.V.

Now can we all take a vote or something and get these people kicked off the site?? I think we ( as in Vegans/Vegetarians) get enough flack, this forum should not be a place for us to receive more grief for others guilt and warped beliefs. I come here to talk with like minded people and learn. To you who have come here to argue your anti-vegan perspectives, please be advised that you are greatly outnumbered and we ( or at least) I will tear your "facts" and opinions apart.

Thanks Meg! For saying what all of us are screaming at our computers! Your statements were logical and fair even though I know you were just as frustrated as I. I was raised very religious, so the facts about the bible are engraved in my brain. I love it when someone tries to throw religion or "God" in as an argument. I am not religious anymore, but I am certain with my every being that "God" did not intend for animals to be treated like in the video. You are right - we have abused that power and for far too long!

I didn't notice that..I was too blinded with anger and frustration : ) Yes, they clearly joined in order to pick fights with us. They must have very active lives if this is what they do for fun. I don't know much about the bible, to be honest but I do know that using it or "God" as a means to back up an argument is illogical as you can't prove the existence of God and simply because it was written thousands of years ago that people ate goats, hardly supports the argument that eating meat is justifiable. Actually, the Bible states that we have "dominion" over animals and according to about.com ,""dominion" doesn't mean "exploitation", "decapitation" and "domination", but rather a responsibility for stewardship. " We have a responsibility toward these animals because we have so much power over how they function in the animal kindom. With great power comes great responsibility. We have clearly abused that power greatly.
