Kind Lifer Carol's life was being turned upside down by a hidden culprit that couldn't be pinpointed. Check out how she turned her life around:
I happened upon your book at the library when I was searching for vegetarian/vegan cookbooks. My daughter, Georgia, has had a very strong aversion to eating meat ever since we introduced solid food. You see, she's only two years old, so getting her to eat a balanced diet is difficult enough, but throw in a lackluster desire for meat and mealtime is beyond difficult. So I set out on a journey to find meatless recipes to cook for my family. Little did I know that picking up your book would change our lives in more ways than one.
At the time I picked up your book, my daughter was suffering from chronic rashes. We had been to the doctor six times in two months. They just kept saying, It's dermatitis, and wait and watch, but nobody had ever pinpointed the culprit. A dermatologist had diagnosed her with eczema and a staph infection, but again, the culprit remained at large. As a mother, nothing is more torturous than watching your baby suffer. My daughter was so uncomfortable all the time. Her skin was rough and dry no matter how much lotion we applied.
When I read pages 39 - 40 of The Kind Diet where you talk about how undiagnosed milk allergies can be the cause of other conditions such as eczema, a light bulb went off. I called and left a message for my daughter's pediatrician that night. My daughter was diagnosed with lactose intolerance when she was a few months old, and I wondered if it was in fact an allergy. The next day, with her doctor's approval, we started her on a two-week dairy free trial. The day we started the trial her skin felt like Braille. It was rough and red and flaky. It took a mere 48 hours of a dairy free trial for her skin to clear up 80%. I am not exaggerating; 80%! By the end of the two weeks her skin was completely healed.
Countless doctors and specialists, and none of them ever mentioned diet. Your book, your words, changed our lives. Your book helped me find the culprit. We have started making the transition to a kinder diet for the whole family. Thank you so much for this book. You have truly made a difference in the world.
I can't tell you how happy I am that your little baby is feeling better. This makes me so happy! Thank you so much for sharing your story.

I had terrible eczema for about 15 years. It kept getting worse and doctors kept putting me on different steroids and cremes and nothing worked. I finally decided to go vegan to challenge myself to stick to a new years resolution....and the eczema is gone! Within one week it was significantly better and within 3 weeks it was 100% gone. If I am bad and have dairy (even the tinest amount!) I will have a rash the following morning. It's crazy how that was the cause of it...but I am so glad I figured it out!

Our baby had horrible eczema too as an infant, I started limiting dairy (this was when I was still on the fence about giving it up completely and he was only nursing) and I noticed it going away but even with limiting dairy, it still stuck around and about a year ago to the day I was trying to moisturize his back that was red and cracked while he cried, that was it. I quit completely and haven't looked back and he has never had dairy directly (after starting solids) because we just assume that if he reacted that way as a baby that it's only a matter of time it would effect him as a toddler. He's our kind baby and has been the catalyst for our continued efforts to better our diet.

This really is so great to hear! I had eczema throughout my childhood, I'm so happy to hear that you were able to help your sweet love out. That is really a wonderful thing. Since I've been off dairy I have had very minimal out breaks, including heat rash. I can't express how happy I am for you and your little girl :) Congrats!

Carol, another thing that makes a huge difference is using natural laundry care products with No chemicals in your soaps or lotions. Tide "Free and Clear" has dioxene in it. It causes cancer in kids and is not safe. I have been using natural Melaleuca products for 20 years and have cleared up all the skin problems for my kids and grandkids. They also have natural baby shampoo and baby wash which is the same ph as water and chemical free.
Johnson and Johnson and Baby magic have formaldahyde and dioxene in them and are banned in Europe. These products are 30% off when you shop from an account online and it is only $1 to open up a shopping account. If you are interested, just email me at cindy@total-welllness.info and I can help you in that area. Chemicals are so bad for kids and toxic too.

Great story,
I can definately relate - my daughter has had eczema issues.
I managed to get completely off my asthma meds after adopting a kind diet - I suspect giving up dairy helped. And I don't suffer from seasonal alergies and sinus problems anymore either.

Hi! My 3 yr old daughter has an "dry patch," as she referes to it, on her leg that I cannot get rid of. I tried eliminating dairy, and although this helped, she still had the eczema. I think I need to get an allergy test for her because I have tried everything else...food diary, eliminating lots of common allergy food items. Since she is off of dairy, her lungs have improved. For the first few years of her life, she would struggle with colds, and them ending up in her lungs and then end up giving her albuterol. I haven't needed to give her a treatment in a long time. She was labeled as slightly asthmatic. Not any longer. I know allergies and eczema can go hand in hand though.
It is hard to find those good doctors, but their out there though I have yet to find mine. My daughter was simply prescribed a steroid cream and was told "this will treat the symptoms." OK, awesome, but I want to get to the root of the problem. I used the cream for about 2 weeks, cleared it up but once I stopped using it, it came back. grrrrr. Then I boycotted the cream. "F" the steroid cream, yuck! Don't want to put that on my baby.
Hopefully we will find out soon what is causing her eczema, any which way it goes, we will remain dairy free. That stuff is just too nasty for the body.

So true! My son, age 6, has suffered from eczema since age 2 but I was always afraid to try taking him off dairy. Recently, an allergy test confirmed he has a milk allergy and within weeks of taking him off dairy his skin is so much better!
And it's not really that hard to have a child dairy-free. There are so many milk substitutions and he doesn't miss it at all.

Im so happy to hear about your success and taking charge of your families health instead of relying on MD's. It seems the tide is finally coming in on how health is nearly 100% related to your diet. I only wish MD's would stop focusing on profit margins and put the health and preventative care of their patients first. Anyway, congrats!
btw: Harvard Medical School ust released thier 20 year study of diet and health. Conclusion: Harvard Medical School now recommends cutting out 100% of all meat and animal based food stuffs out of you diet! Now that says something

Jacqs924, I had colic too as a baby and just now cut dairy out of my diet. I feel so much better- no more rolling over in pain after every meal! I wish my parents had tried the dairy free approach you are trying.

There is nothing quite like the power of a mama! Yay to you for taking matters in your own hands. I am a big proponent of taking charge of our help. I think doctors can be wonderful (I love mine), but I am also a VERY active member of my health.

Our bodies should have a alkaline base and any meat and dairy products ( animal ) is acidic and will cause all kinds of skin disorders, along with lots of other nasty problems in our bodies. It's good to know that we will stand for what we believe and some have proof that it does work and keep doing what is important to make our families have the best life possible :)

Glad you figured it out, Carol! I had a similar experience. I was told when my daughter was 4 weeks old that she had colic (by friends adn family) and i refused to believe she cried for no reason. I did some research and tried eliminating a number of foods. Dairy was the culprit! Not only did her 'colic' go away, but she also had terrible diaper rash since she was born and within a couple days it was completely gone. When I talked to a lactation consultant about it, she told me that dairy causing those things was impossible. Well, fine, but I'm sticking with my dairy free life.

This is an awesome post! I'm so happy that Alicia's book helped Carol identify her daughter's allergy when doctors and specialists couldn't. I am starting naturopathic medicial school in the fall and stories like this re-afirm my confidence in naturopathic medical philosophies. Getting to the root cause of illness and maintaining a healthful diet are cornerstones of naturopathic medicine and I look forward to having a career where I get to be a problem-solver while providing individualized treatment for my patient. Skin conditions are most often a direct reflection of what is going on inside the body and at the perfect age of 2, there should be a clear cause for such problem.

I agree! I have learned the hard way that you need to take your health into your own hands. I started making my natural bath & beauty products out of an effort to find something to help heal my daugher's eczema. I limited her dairy, put her on probiotics and treated her topically with my shea butter balm. It worked and she hasn't has a flare up in years!

How frustrating that her child suffered unnecessarily because no doctor considered diet. Food allergies and eczema are two peas in a pod! Another example of most docs forgetting that food is medicine and the wrong diet is the body's biggest source of imbalance. So glad they found a solution -- good for her for figuring it out!
