Ricki Lake's documentary The Business of Being Born is such an important film. I saw it when it came out in theaters years ago. It blew me away! Ricki and her team did such an amazing job conveying such an important message.

Watching it, I felt so empowered and excited about what was ahead for me. It was so inspiring to see the power and beauty of what our bodies are capable of. This film is an absolute must for every single woman and every single man who cares about a woman. Please, please watch it!

The Business Of Being Born is available on Netflix instant viewing. You can also get more information at Ricki's website. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, Citizens for Midwifery provides information about where you can find a licensed midwife in your area.

Please, please see this film, and please tell me what you think afterward! If every single woman saw this film, I feel positive there would be much less suffering and complications in child birth.

Have any of you seen this film? What did it do to you?

As a British woman who thought childbirth in the UK was heavily medicalised, I was shocked to learn about childbirth in the US through this film. Midwives are standard practice in the UK unless there's a problem during birth, in which case a doctor will become involved, and home births are increasingly encouraged. I just can't believe that women in the US are being robbed of what should be one of the most empowering and wonderful times of their lives. I sincerely hope that this documentary ignites the flame of much-needed change.

I love this film. I had concidered a home birth before but this film made me even more confident in that choice.

Thanks for recommending this movie! It solidified what I already knew from personal experience and fired me up about the need to spread the word about midwifery. My oldest child was born in a hospital in 1994. I had educated myself and had a birth plan. I was walking around at 8 cm dilated, and feeling great! I was progressing quickly and in control of my pain. Then, an ob/gyn resident ordered me into bed, ruptured my membranes (against my wishes), and would not let me out of bed again. It took me 6 hours to progress to 10 cm. (I had made it to 8 cm in less than 2 hours, by listening to my body.) I was hysterical and begged to be let out of bed. When finally I could push, he was born in 5 minutes. My body knew what to do!

So, in 1995 when I was pregnant with my second and last son, I vowed no doctor would touch me. (I had found out in the mean time that Medical Assistance in PA DOES pay for midwives.) In 1996, I delivered my almost 9 lb son in 30 minutes at a free-standing birth center. We were home 5 hours after he was born. Thank God for Midwives! We must spread the word!!!!!!

I had a midwife when I had my son 13 years ago. The only reason I had one was because he was born in a military hospital. It was the most difficult thing I've ever experience. The woman let me rip because she did not give me an epesiotomy. I felt every bit of the ripping since the woman didn't believe I shouldl receive anymore medication. I ripped in the front due to his rather large head. I hate to be gross but, even though she sewed me up, it came apart and now I have a perminent inner labia tear. I could wear jewelry if Ii was into that sort of thing. Maybe my experience was because it was a military hospital, I can't say for sure. My best advise wouldl be to know your midwife well before hand.

Oh, this was just the best movie. It came out right after my son was born at home in a birthing tub with my midwife and husband supporting me. It was by far, THE BEST BIRTH EXPERIENCE I COULD'VE EVER IMAGINED! This film erases most of the fear for women that is (unfortunately) attached to birthing, allowing the women to REALLY see birth for what is truly is: a beautiful and much-needed experience (that also happens to be really hard work; like a marathon ). This was my first birth and when I tell people that it wasn't painful they think I'm exaggerating, or flat out lying.

I really hope all women who are pregnant or thinking about having a baby see this film. It's even great for women who have already given birth to see, as it has the awesome power to change their minds and question what society and modern medicine like to shove down women's throats as the only safe option.

I saw this film and it changed my life. I am not sure when I do get pregnant if I will do it through a hospital or naturally. My BFF did all of hers through a natural midwife birthing center. I got to see first hand the difference between the two. I just don't know what is right for me yet. Won't know til I get pregnant and on the boat. Either way I love how this film changed my life. Saw it a year ago.

I second the thanks to Laura, for recognizing as a medical professional that there are things that need to be fixed in our system, and that from her own professional experience in two European countries that it is hardly dangerous to have a midwife to help birth your baby. We in the States just have to get with the times and not pressure women with fear.

TBOBB convinced my husband and I to look into midwives. My daughter was born at home, in water. My dog slept beside the birth tub while I labored. She is my first baby and I will have all my babies at home. It was empowering and perfect.

My head midwife (I had three at my birth) is a Certified Nurse Midwife, was a trauma nurse in the army and a chief nurse in an ER. I had an oxygen tank, an IV (I was throwing up and dehydration was a concern), and medication on hand. My daughter was given Vitamin K because of some head bruising, I required stitches. My midwife said that I would be taken to the hospital for much smaller issues because I was a first time mom. My primary care physician (who disapproved of my choice, but felt I should have the birth I wanted) told me that my pregnancy was normal and I was fine to go ahead with my home birth, and agreed to be my back up should we need to transfer to the hospital.

My point is that home birth does not have to be as it is perceived in our culture. It's not anti-establishment or reckless. It is often done thoughtfully and carefully, with mothers who researched and understand what interventions may be truly necessary and health care providers who are trained and capable. It does not have to be, and rarely is, "entrusting two lives to the untrained" as someone said in a previous post.

The trained midwives I have met seem to know more about birthing 10+ lb babies and maneuvers to safely birth breech position as well as the dreaded head and arm combination than their slice happy obstetrical counter parts. I'm grateful for the producers of that documentary, they introduced to me to a world and a birth experience I would have otherwise missed.

I loved this documentary! I think it is so important for our bodies to do things themselves without always being interrupted by drugs. A friend of mine was administered three epidurals and was in labor for over 24 hours because she wasn't dilating! I was terrified of having a child until I watched this documentary and saw how miraculous and beautiful the whole process is.

Krysten, there are birthing pools in hospitals here in the UK - this is why the programme I mentioned is so fascinating. We still have a midwife system here thank goodness. We lived briefly in the States and this is how I came to watch The Business Of Being Born, as I thought I would be most likely having my first child in the US. I would definitely still consider a home birth but I do think the birthing pool at the hospital is a happy medium and the 'best of both worlds'.

I am a L&D RN and in my last year of nurse midwifery school (CNM). I worked abroad in both London and Germany working with a midwifery based maternity care. It is night and day when comparing the US vs Europe in both practice and outcomes. The US is so far behind. The Business of Being Born is such a true and accurate portrayal of our broken system. I hope everyone watches it and educates themselves on what is best for both them and their unborn child. Women need to know that they do have a choice, to trust their body and to be empowered to take charge of both their body and their decisions. Kudos to you Alicia for spreading the word about the movie. I am hoping as a CNM that I can make a difference in our birthing system here in the US.

My whole life I was terrified with the thought of giving birth. It wasn't until I was 7 months pregnant that the notion of "how would my child want his birth to be?" that I let go of my ego and fears and decided I would explore the path the a natural birth. I did watch "The Business of Being Bord" but to be honest watching some of the birth scenes made me a little scared.. who wants to watch a woman moaning in such pain? What REALLY helped me to relax my mind was reading the book called Hypnobirthing. It has some amazing information, and the recommended cds that go with it were awesome. (Steve Halbern I think is the composer to the music ones). I listened to the positive birth affirmations and the Comfort Zone cd everyday and night leading up to the birth. The day after my due date I went to bed and woke up to a big kick and gush. water breaking (no contractions beforehand). I did go to a hospital, but it was a very progressive hospital with birthing suites with private whirlpool tubs (and a doctor who "doesn't do routine episiotomies"). The mood was delicious and I listened to the Comfort Zone on repeat over and over.. I was ok until about 7 inches dilation and then the contractions got really intense and yes, painful (I often wonder how those people can say they had a pain free natural childbirth, they are very lucky if that is true). They overwhelmed me at that point. A little shot of nubain got me through until I eased that baby out.. with not one tear. The doctor said "wow that was textbook. There really must be something to that hypnobirthing thing". Anyways, next time I have learned to come with a doula to try to help me get through the tough 7-10 inches completely naturally... My husband was an ok coach but I think a doula would be better equipped to get me through the hard parts. Overall I wouldn't have changed a thing!

i was curious about home births about a year ago and i took out a book from the library... i cant recall the name right now. it was about a woman who is a certified nurse midwife and her stories. it was fascinating and really eye opening, but i can say that after reading it i will never ever ever have a home birth. there were just too many times when she said things like "had the baby continued to be in respiratory distress we would have of course gone to the hospital just 10 minutes away..." um. no. had the baby been in respiratory distress you bet your ass i would have wanted a doctor standing RIGHT THERE to step in. i think there has to be a middle ground somewhere- i dont know much about birthing centers but they sound like they might be a good compromise. i agree that reading the book opened my eyes to how WRONG a hospital birth can be in so many ways- they make it cold and scary instead of natural and wonderful. but i think when i came down to it i want to know that if ANYTHING went wrong there'd be a doctor next to me and a NICU down the hall.

I did not see this movie but I'd like to share my births with you. When I was pregnant with my second child, I remember my then co-worker talking about her sister having a nurse-midwife deliver her baby. I asked her the midwife's info and bought the book 'Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" by Susan McCutcheon (VERY GOOD, VERY INFORMATIVE BOOK!!!). To make the story short - I had three (yes three!) wonderful natural births. They sure were MUCH better than that c-section I got for my first child. Imagine my shock when I heard my sister scheduled her 2nd c-section for her 2nd child when the pregnancy was going well!

i had watched this movie years ago, but when i found out i was pregnant last march i hunted it down again. what an amazing and empowering movie. it seeled the deal for me... i was having a home birth. this was my second child, and seeing as my first labour went very smoothly...and extremely quickly(2.5 hours) i was feeling pretty confident. i wanted an all natural water birth. fast forward to nov 30th (3 weeks before my due date) and 7am i'm getting contrations. call my midwife, she has clinic that day and of course thinks it's early labour. she asks me to come to the clinic. got my husband up, called my parents (dad is coming to help with my 10 year old and mama is coming with me) we grabbed the car seat (which of course wasn't installed yet) some diapers and some clothes. i was pretty sure my son was going to be born at the clinic. rush there, she checks me and sees that i'm 7 cm!! in panic mode she says get back in the car and get home!! she tells the patients in the wating room and the other midwife i'm about to have this baby so she had to leave. she gave us blankets for the car and told me not to push....walked in the front door, made it upstairs and on the bed. my mom ran my tub, since the birthing pool never made it and i hopped in. 5 minutes in the tub and one crazy hard push and my gorgeous little man cosmo was in my arms. it was incredible!! after everything was done i got help over to my bed and just enjoyed him for hours.... it's not for everyone, but for me i wouldn't have wanted it any other way:)

I didn't get to watch this movie until after my son was born and it made me so relieved that I had a natural, drug free birth. I know that it is not possible for every female to be able to have one, but if you can, I suggest it. It sure is one of those documentaries that every mom or mother to be should see, next to a great food documentary.

For UK Kind Lifers, there's an amazing programme on every Monday on Channel 4 called One Born Every Minute. I'm totally gripped by it and have already decided I want to use the birthing pool. They focus on three women every week and it's fascinating viewing. So excited for Alicia:)

My Mother was an OB-GYN and then went and obtained a Ph.D. in ethics. Her dissertation was about coercion and force of pregnant women. I absolutely agree that there is a problem with some doctors forcing women to do some things that are perhaps not medically necessary. However, I believe the statistics of needing c-sections because of pain medications is very low, and I personally feel the benefits of accesss to immediate medical care ooutweighs the negatives of a hospital birth (just my opinion). I am 100% for a woman choosing what she feels is right for her, but I don't think it makes a woman somehow heroic if she chooses a home birth over a hospital birth. Reasonably, they both have pros and cons. I would like to see a change where women feel safe, cared for and listened to in a hospital setting.

Pixie, thank you. Yes I remember I was terrified beforehand, even though I really wanted a natural homebirth. I remember even considering the C-Section many times as the fear became so big. However, I just kept working on it with breathwork sessions & it took until about a week before the actual birth until I finally felt "ready" to handle it. And then when the time came it was so easy I can't tell you - the contractions were no worse than a period pain, and I mean that genuinely. The pushing was physically hard work, but all the way through the pain was hardly noticeable. It was definitely the most wonderful 8 hours of my life to date & I would gladly do it all over again, only this time I would welcome it as I would "know" what was to come!
