GIVEAWAY: Recommit For 2013 with The Kind Diet

Dec 20, 2012 at 6:02am by Alicia Silverstone
mZXue5FnFgR1gVBJ3zYn1ANc.jpeg:Amazon:photo

It’s been a crazy year for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to restoring some balance to my life. Although the end of the year can feel hectic, it’s a good time to reflect and reset.

This time of year can be intense. The weather is cold, and we naturally want to be inside to think and grow, and kind of hunker down. That’s what’s naturally supposed to be happening, yet we’re being pulled outward so much at this time of year, to go out, party, go shopping etc…

With that said, it’s very important to allow yourself to hibernate if you feel like it. You really should listen to yourself and trust your instincts at this time of year. Don’t be guilted into going out if you don’t want to. You can be festive when you feel like it. Do what you need and want. Take care of yourself and be mindful of this reflective time of year.

Toward the very end of the year and in early January, the days start to get longer and our natural inclination to hibernate starts to wane. There will be plenty of time to celebrate in the New Year. So, right now, be festive if you want to, but if you feel like hibernating, let yourself do that too.

Recommit To Your Kind Principles

The New Year is a time to regroup, make new commitments and deepen already existing commitments – Maybe you have been flirting and you want to try going 100% vegan, or maybe you’ve been following a vegan diet and you’re ready to try on a more superhero lifestyle.

Now is an excellent time to reread The Kind Diet, or get a copy if you don’t have it. Wherever you are on your journey, I’d like to help. I’m giving away three signed copies of The Kind Diet to encourage everyone to start 2013 on the right foot.

UPDATE

Congratulations to our winners...

Crystal
The Kind Diet has done so much for me and my Mom. We have both been vegan for 7 months now and have never felt better. The committment I'd like to make with her is to try more superhero meals together. I'm guilty of eating a few too many vegan treats and would like to get back on track. I would like to say that my vegan treats like your pb crispy treats are a fave of my sister and other non vegans. I would like to further committment myself by recycling more and introducing the reasons behind our lifestyle to others by viewing Forks Over Knives and Food Inc. If I could get one more person to join my Mom and I in 2013 I'd consider it a huge accomplishment. Also thank you Alicia for reminding me it's ok to hibernate and take care of myself.

Sheila
I am going to commit to go total SUPERHERO !! I went vegetarian after reading your book from the library. I feel great, have lost weight and almost off all meds !! I am ready to go all the way. i want my kids to follow in my footsteps to a long, healthy way of living. Owning my own copy to read again and have all the recipes at hand would be amazing and greatly appreciated. Thanks Alicia for motivating me to change my life. Wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy new Year to you and your family !!

Kara
I went from omni to vegan after seeing the documentary Earthlings, but I'm new to this and have occasionally strayed into vegetarianism. My commitment for 2013 and onward is to be vegan and STAY vegan! Veganism has made me learn how to cook, and that's where I've been having the most difficulties. I've never been one for cooking, and have never paid attention to my own nutrition before. I want that to change, and I would love a copy of you book to help me out. Thanks either way, I love your blog. :)

Hi!! Happy New Year!!The way I am re-committing to The Kind Diet in 2013 is 1) volunteering to be a foster for "More Paws to Love" animal rescue 2)Find a cookbook for using the "dehydrator" that I have had for a year...smh. The dehydrator will allow me & kids to eat more raw foods!

Hi, After reading The Kind Diet almost immediately I started a vegan diet and I was pretty happy with it too. Obviously eating has emotional strings to it and with thanksgiving's arrival I fell out of the Kind Life garden. Are all those pre-thanksgiving images akin to a serpent?

Well after my fall from grace and gradual return to eating the way I feel good about I find that my body does respond very well to a non animal based diet. I have less stuffed nose episodes and less of what stuffs me up in my body-for instance, but I feel better too.

It's disconcerting to realize that I am able to be manipulated by the marketing and seductive food images out there. I may have to consider shopping in stores that don't do that-particularly during the holidays.

Another idea that arises for me is a 12 step program for those who want to avoid animal products.

I have dedicated the first two weeks of the new year to going completely vegan, and invited everyone to join me on the journey by invitation and sharing my favorite recipe of my day on www.stephanieannferguson.com
A signed copy would make a great giveaway to a lucky person looking to lead a Kind Life!

I'm going to take more time for me. Starting to try different workout routines like kickboxing! I live in AZ so this is the perfect time to take in a hike and see more nature. The kind diet is easier. I've survive the holidays at the office where food was everywhere but none of it vegan. I helped withe recipes here and many loved them! Like Alicia taking more time to write. Most of all my biggest resolution is to have more patience! It's rough but can be done. I've learned to step away and do something. It helps stay on the kind diet and ease the mind. Happy 2013 everyone! Sam

Proud to be Vegan. This is the one thing in my life that I can share without a second thought. I had been a vegetarian for about six years before I realized that being a vegan was a more compassionate way to live. Not that being a vegetarian was wrong or anything, it was a start, but being vegan has made me feel complete. Now I understand so much more about animal atrocities and how we must all do whatever we can to put and end to it. I think one day children with read in history how the world founded a life of compassion for all Earthlings. And that the world became a healthier and happier place. That this act of compassion put an end to famine and brought better living conditions all across the world. Becoming a vegan has made, is making me a better person every day. Alicia's blog, The Kind Life is probably the icing on the cake I needed. It was after I found her blog that I met another vegan that also touched my heart, Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, and helped me, along with Alicia to understand animal rights. I will be forever in gratitude and thankfulness.

My name is Naomi and at the start of the new year I had declared that I wanted to be the healthiest I have ever been. So after reading Alicia's book "The Kind Diet" it gave me all the tools and knowledge I need to convert to a Vegan lifestyle. I am on day 4 and I am slowly converting my two children and husband as well. So far my kiddos have been much more gracious then my hubby. But small changes make a great difference. I dived in 100% and I am loving it. Knowing that by not only am I helping aid myself to great health I am helping with our wonderful planet. Yah!

I am the proud mother of a 6-week old baby boy. Our family has been vegan for the past 3 years and now we're raising our son vegan as well. While I am overjoyed by our veganism I would really like to start exploring macrobiotics and I've heard your book is wonderful for those who are wanting to move toward this lifestyle. I want to find the best thing for our family and especially for our son. It's time we started raising more superheroes!

I am going to continue to eat vegetarian but I am going to clean up my diet a bit and try to eat different vegetables and fruits that I may not normally eat. I use cheese substitutes, almond milk, and butter substitutes already, but I am constantly worried about my protein intake so the book would definitely help with that. The book would be great for new recipes and inspiration to continue this journey.

Okay the biggest thing I want to commit is a New ME and a New Life. Looking for a new job, change my bedroom completely, and more changes in my diet. I am vegetarian but now want to learn to eat more raw foods, juices, alternatives to diary products (already switched to almond milk), and more! Thus this would be a great book!

      Hi!
I am starting the new year by gradually making changes in my diet and would love a guide on where and how to begin doing so. I know that when I eat meat my body does not feel as clean or as energized as when I have taken meat out of my diet so I am excited to begin a new lifestyle by eliminating meat. I am looking forward to transforming myself this year and getting to see/feel the changes of THE KIND DIET on my body and mind!

      Thanks,

Hello. I am 24 and a mother of 2 young daughters. I am committing to a 6 day a week vegan diet during 2013. I am doing 6 days because I don't want to overwhelm myself and I want to be able to feel like I am enjoying myself. I also want to see the effects of meat and dairy on my body more clearly. I am doing this so I can finally lose the baby weight I have put on. I am also going vegan so I can maybe help cure myself of several mental disorders that I have. Or at least rid myself of some symptoms. I want to show my daughters what being healthy is all about. I want to reduce my carbon footprint and leave a healthier planet behind me when I die. Going vegan seems to be the best way to do that. I am not against eating meat, however eating properly raised a slaughtered meat is difficult to do and expensive. It is better to abstain than to give in to the food industry as it is. Anyway, I would love to have The Kind Life. I've heard many good reviews of it. I think I've read an early edition at one point in time, but it has been a long time. The Kind Life would help me make this New Years Resolution a reality! Happy New Year to your family, Alicia! :)

I've been becoming more and more aware of the effects food can have on the body through documentaries such as Forks Over Knives, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, and Food Matters and the writings of Dr. Colin Cambpell. Over the past few months I've really been trying to incorporate healthier choices into my diet such as choosing meatless options, taking the time to prepare delicious plant-based food, and experimenting with juicing and green smoothies. Yummm.

I'm not a committed person. Every diet I've ever tried has always ended up in failure. I can't even commit to hobbies or regular TV shows. Through my recent acquisition of knowledge, I don't want to keep eating the way I'm eating and I'm really looking for help in making an educated and positive life choice in terms of the way I eat and the way I treat my body.

For 2013, I want to become a healthy person. The stress of college over the past 4 1/2 years has not only been a root cause of weight gain but it has played a huge factor in the deterioration of my immune system. With some proper mentorship from The Kind Diet I feel as though I can take my first steps towards making a permanent and positive life decision. Hopefully I can make that start with my own copy of The Kind Diet!

      "TWENTY-THIRTEEN! FRESH AND CLEAN!!"
That's my new year's commitment! I love eating fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and making fresh juices! it makes me feel proud to put good food in my body! but its time for me to take my diet to the next level. I'm ready to clean out and remove the dairy and meat from my menu! I continuously struggle with acne and fatigue, and unfortunately, a more than occasional white sugar/white flour binge. It makes me feel terrible, depressed, tired and gross and I wonder how other people live like that everyday! I want to be an inspiration to others, especially friends and family! After having a child with autism and putting him on a gluten/casein free diet, I can see how the gut and brain are so connected. And after doing the 'Daniel' fast this past year, I felt like my brain was literally sparkling:) I need your book for that final motivation Alicia. I want to get fresh and clean for 2013! Thank you for being such an inspiration to other mommies like me!

This holiday season has found me at an all time heavy weight, battling fatigue, acne and general dissatisfaction with the way I treat myself via the food choices I have been making. In 2013 I am committing to thinking beyond the temporary, sensory pleasure of what I put into my mouth with an awareness of how every bite I take impacts not only my own health but the environment, animals, other people. I am going to pursue veganism for the month of January as a start.
ps I also used Christmas gift money to purchase the Juice beauty skincare line this week with great hopes for clearer skin! thank you Alicia for offering a kinder path!

I feel like I have not been very kind to myself for many years and its time for change. I have always struggled with eating meat and dairy and always felt like it was wrong and felt sick afterwards, but never had the push to make the change. I just had my second baby in October and I think it's time I turn to a new life style change and transform my family to a plant based vegan diet. I have no energy and finally started to really question my eating habits and with raising a two year old and nursing a two month old, my commitment this new year is to finally take the plunge and make some changes. It's hard to get started ... Too many blogs ... Books ... Info out there so where does one begin. The Kind Diet sounds like we wouldn't have to dive right in all at once, but could go through the stages and over the course of the year make major transformation to a plant based vegan lifestyle. The Kind Diet would be my inspiration and motivation to seriously take control of my life and feel good on the inside and out. I need motivation and direction and this is it !!!!!

One of the commitments I have made for 2013 (I have 4) is to extend a daily random act of kindness. This giveaway made me think: How can I extend kindness not only to others, but towards my own body and health? I think The Kind Life book might give me more food for thought! Thank you!

One commitment for 2013.... sounds easy enough but my mind is full of chaos when I think on the answer. I guess the best thing I can say is that I want to commit to simply being better. I've been an on again off again vegetarian for almost three years. I manage to stay with it a large majority of the time but being surrounded by meat eaters makes it hard sometimes. I'm a stay at home mom of three beautiful girls. My oldest is about to turn 5 and my twins just turned a year old. I'm so tired of being tired all the time. I'm 26 and feel 86 sometimes. I'd continue to list my other issues but as most of you are former meat or dairy eaters you know how i feel. I've been to Doctors and they all say the same things "Take this pill twice a day and all your problems will go away" ... OK maybe not those exact words but close. I'm ready to make the leap but as I am the only vegetarian I know I'm lost as far a basic direction. I just want to give my kids the best. I want to give them a fun energetic mommy and lots of love for all the years i am able to be on this earth and I want them to enjoy healthy and kind lives and have them pass it on to their children one day. I know me going vegan might not change much in this world but I hope by passing it to my children I can help create a ripple effect so yes, simply put, I want to be better.

I just retired from a 23 year career in the US Air Force and am looking for a new career outside the DoD. I found it very hard to stay committed to any kind of diet or exercise program while in, but by God's grace managed to most of the time. I've flirted with becoming vegan once in my life and that effort was cut short due to a military deployment, but I can honestly say that at that point I've never felt better or healthier in my life. My commitment this new year is to find my new career in that will contribute to a "kind life" not only for myself and family, but for others as well...any ideas for me as I start my job hunt?

Hello Alicia!!!!! I am so excited to be writing this and to be a part of the Kind Life website! I have been vegetarian on and off my whole life, but finally decided to go completely Veg and not look back 5 years ago... I always wanted to go Vegan, but wanted to get fully comfortable with being Vegetarian first.

Well, here I am ready to take the leap... the fantastic leap! I guess what has made me want to really do this is the fact I, "feel I am ready." How do I know I am ready you ask? Simple, it's because I hear myself making the SAME excuses for eating cheese or baked goods the way I USED to about steak and chicken... Excuses like, "But I couldn't live without cheese! I love cheese! I love pizza!" Or perhaps something like, "Oh, I have eaten shortbread cookies forever, they are a tradition... a family tradition." Just as going out to a steakhouse as a child was a tradition for birthdays, I was able to change it and I know I can make this change too! It's simply a matter of learning, relearning some of my favorite foods and really just putting in the effort!

As I have become more aware of myself and traveled inward, these phrases/excuses were easy for me to pick up on as my own laziness/fear. It's "easier" to remain vegetarian around my "just getting used to my vegetarian ways" family and "easier" to go about my life still eating things I don't necessarily feel good about because it is what is more "acceptable." I don't know why the word "vegan" freaks people out, but it seems to A LOT more than the word "vegetarian," at least in my experience. As I have shared with my close friends and family that I am trying to go Vegan as of the New Moon the last week of December, I haven't received any positive feedback. It isn't that I need feedback, but I also don't have the support of people very close to me and feel quite alone on this journey! Even my husband, God bless how great this man is, seems nervous about it as he said, "BUT I LOVE CHEESE!!!" It is as if my changing lifestyle has made people anxious, and that is the last thing I want. I definitely don't want people to feel pressure to change because I have.

While I grow and continue to become fully conscious (or at least working towards that), I know the time is NOW. I know I can do it, but feel that having this book and the tools to do it would make it a much smoother transition! :) Most of my friends are vegetarians and even my husband, but this Vegan journey is one I am making on my own, which is fine, but I am a bit lost... I want to ensure I do it properly and maintain my energy levels as I am a yoga teacher and want to maintain my high energy levels. I feel that having many recipes and encouragement will help with that.

My main goal is to lead by example and share with the world the gifts we all have within us and to show that ALL people can adopt this compassionate lifestyle. At the end of the day, I love all the benefits of being Vegan from health all the way to the environmental impact, to the fact that I am not supporting big companies I don't believe in to of course... my LOVE for animals and life.... Compassion. Kindness... and knowing I have done my best.

In particular, many people at my studio and friends and family ask me questions about health, fitness, yoga, calories, etc. and I want to ensure that I learn as much as I can so that I can give the right advice. While I do believe everyone's "eyes are open" in their own time and that it's not my job to go out and condemn people for eating meat- I do leave myself open and available for people inquiring about vegetarianism. A lot of people have made the switch and feel fabulous (including my husband) and I am hoping, that when they see the change in me after switching to Veganism, they will start to inquire about that too! Again, while it is not my goal to force anybody into anything, I do believe people are naturally curious about compassionate lifestyles and if handled kindly, people will be more open to receiving information.

My motto is, "What is good shall be eaten!" I have been told I was a good cook before I was a vegetarian, but all of my friends and family agree that I am an even better cook now. I am hoping the same rings true with my switch to being Vegan and that at my gatherings omnivores and vegetarians alike will exclaim with delight, "This is Veeeeeegan?!?!?!?!" And I can reply, "Yeeeeah, I know riiiiiiight?" and then give them a wink!

Thanks so much for listening and have a happy new year!

I believe school curriculum is an area that needs to refocus on what is actually healthy and sustainable. We need to teach all kids to be kind to stay healthy. Thank you for what you do!! K.
