Last time I posted about vegan bodybuilders, lots of you kind lifers asked for more! Now the New York Times has picked up on the veg bodybuilding trend, profiling a few names that will probably be familiar to you, including Robert Cheeke and Giacomo Marchese (sorry ladies, he's engaged now!).

The article includes perspectives from both the bodybuilders and nutritionists who support a veg lifestyle, as well as those who question it. Read the full article here, then email the article's author, Mary Pilon, to let her know how much you enjoyed the article, and why you are committed to a veg lifestyle.

Who are your favorite vegan athletes?

At our spa and natural healng school we offer high protein vegan meals and then send them off to the gym to build that mass. You can get all the protein you need on a vegan diet.

Thanks Alicia for this post. I was happy to read it. I have two daughters in high school volleyball and at the parent meeting for the whole athletic department, all school teams, they showed this little government supported video on how young athletes should be drinking chocolate milk, and LOTS of it, to support their training. I was devastated! Then the trainer and coaches backed it by saying the kids should be consuming not just milk with chocolate syrup from home but the heavy duty thick premade chocolate milk you buy in gallons at the store. It's truly amazing what information is being fed to our kids. I am trying to get the guts to buy a bundle of informational books/videos to give to the head of the department...China Study, Thrive, Forks over Knives, The Milk Documentary, etc. My oldest has wened herself off of milk now and her acne has cleared up...so that has been enough to keep her away from it. I am not forcing the vegan lifetsyle on my kids, just leading by example for now. They are slowly coming around. I want it to be their decision.

But these types of articles serve as a great support for the athletes of today. Sports have become out of control competitive and they are targeting the kids and families at younger and younger ages every year. It will be very important in the coming years to dispell the myth that animal protein is needed to be the best athlete you can be.

I run 5 miles 5 days a week and do weight training every second day. I'm in school to be a police officer in Canada and there is a very important part of this career focused on fitness considering it can be a life and death situation at any given point of the shift... I am a *trying* vegan (every once in a while a peice of cheese slips in...*covering eyes*...) but havent had meat in over 5 years and I feel amazing! and every bit of information on vegans and athletes helps like crazy!!!!thanks so much! smiley-laughing.gif

Thanks for the article! That makes me so happy to read. I am a vegan marathon runner and often people ask me how I do it on a vegan diet. My running and race times have both improved on a vegan diet and I have never been healthier! My favorite vegan athletes are Brendan Brazier (love his Vega products!) and Scott Jurek.
