Hi everyone – I have been working on getting a bunch of info together for all of you about vegan pregnancy. But I want to know, what questions do you have? Are there any specific things that you would like to know?

I have a bunch of friends who are vegan, remained vegan throughout their pregnancies, and are raising their babies vegan! I want to get all the info that I can from them about this topic, so I just want to make sure I get all of your questions first!

Please post any questions that you have about vegan pregnancy in the comments here, and I will do my best to answer all of them in the upcoming blog!

Stay tuned...

Also, I just had to include this photo of me and my friend Lalanya's daughter Geneva. She is such a beautiful baby! Lalanya was vegan throughout her pregnancy, and looked and felt amazing!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes today (29 weeks pregnant). This is frustrating because I am vegan and I don't eat sugar. We don't even keep sugar in the house. I go to a nutritionist next week but am not sure what she will have to tell me. Any suggestions.........................................

Thanks Rosanna:) Yes, we vegans do need to stick together for sure! Amazingly enough, I personally know 3 other vegans, and they are all male! How weird is that? haha.... Well, one IS my bf, and one is my ex... haha, so that makes sense I guess...

I'm definitely trying to eat even more healthily than before... my diet is never perfect tho, that's for sure! What do you eat in a typical day?

Congratulations Jaime! I will definitely check out your blog:) I am 6 months pregnant now and having a vegan pregnancy. My doctors have been very supportive thus far thankfully! I can't wait to hear more from the group about this topic! I only know one person who is vegan and she is not pregnant so we need to stick together!

Hi Everyone:) I have just found out that I will be having another baby! I'm only about 6 weeks along, and I probably shoudn't be telling people yet, but I'm bad at keeping my mouth shut! haha. I'm vegan, and I'm currently rasing my one year old son vegan. Last preganacy I was only vegetarian, not vegan, so we'll see how this one goes! My doctor is a bit of an idiot.... he sees so many patients, that he barely has time for my questions or concerns. Maybe that will be a plus.... haha... since I won't have to listen to him nag me.. haha. I'd love to keep in touch with this thread, or any of the people on here. I also just started a blog that contain a few recipes, products etc... and once my pregnancy is public knowledge to friends, I will be posting updates about how my pregnancy is going. My blog is www.-vegan-momma.blogspot.com. Feel free to drop by!:)

I have become pregnant thanks to eating a vegan diet, accupuncture, yoga, running and nutritional supplements from my chiropractor Dr. Daniel Wise in Jacksonville MD. I thought I had to stop being vegan when I got pregnant so started eating some animal products. Then I was constantly nauseated for 2.5 weeks. Yuck! Four days ago I went back on a vegan diet and I really haven't had any stomach or nausea problems! Hurrah for plant proteins!

Daren, I think it's important to realize that something like becoming pregnant sometimes makes people realize how important overall health is, so let's be supportive of each other, not judgmental.

To all those asking, I would agree not to be too concerned as long as you are paying attention to what you are eating. Another great book is Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven. I learned so much and the authors reiterate all we've learned from Alicia.

My doctor, luckily, has been more than supportive about me being vegan and all my blood-work and other tests have come back perfectly. Many women get pregnant and then decide they can eat whatever they want (usually junk) because they know they are getting fat anyway so give yourselves some well deserved credit for even trying to eat well!

    GOOD LUCK ALL!

Considering you had your whole life to learn about how to eat and how to eat while pregnant, then you decide ( while pregnant) to be 'concerned' about your unborn child. The fast lesson is obvious, the slow one is not. But to answer your question, at least 50% whole grains, at least 25 % vegetables, 10% Beans ( legumes). 5% sea vegetables. Avoid Meat, eggs, cheese, White table sugar, and chemcials. Chew your food.

Kerri, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you've had so many difficulties with your doctors; it has to be frustrating to waste appointment time on that topic over and over.

I just want to say to others reading that you won't necessarily face such criticism - I'm 9 months pregnant now and haven't had ANY problems with my doctors at all! I even moved to a different state mid-pregnancy, so I've had doctors in two different practices. In both states, my doctors asked me a few questions just to make sure I wasn't an idiot about nutrition, which is perfectly appropriate, in my opinion. There are a lot of people (omni and veg) who eat nutritionally deficient diets, and it's good to identify them and help them improve, especially when growing a baby. I know my stuff, so I was happy to share with them how I was meeting my protein and calcium needs. I actually filled out a log on babyfit.com of what I was eating for a week so I could tally my calories, protein, etc, but when I offered to show it to my first doctor, she waved it away and said she wished all her patients were as focused on eating healthfully. We spent less than 5 minutes discussing it. My bloodwork is always impressive, so that spoke for itself.

Anyway, educate yourself in case you do run into opposition from your doctors (and for the benefit of you and your baby to make sure you really DO know how to meet your changing nutritional needs), but don't assume you'll have a bad experience. My pregnancy has been easier than I ever imagined, and I can't wait to meet my baby!

I also want to thank Heather Trappler for sharing her story and that adorable picture! I had to look twice to realize that's a little foot! I feel better just knowing that I am not the only one working hard to clear the dietary obstacles in the way of my unborn child and the many uneducated people out there who need, and deserve to understand what their bodies truly need (and do not need) to feel great and look great.

Alicia, please continue to do what you do! We are all better off for it. - Kerri

Now I am 6 months pregnant. Therefore my diet has been under scrutiny by new criticisers, those of the medical profession. The fact that I find myself defending this cruelty free, healthy, natural way of life to doctors seems so ridiculous- but the experience was very real and left me feeling drained at times. Ladies, be aware of this if you are planning to become pregnant. You'll need to defend your calcium sources and your protein intake to every doctor who gets their hands on your medical documents. Read some of Dr. Spock's later material on infant development, and how adopting a vegan diet gave him a new lease on life in his very old age. Here is a man who dedicated 50 years studying the healthiest habits of mothers and babies. I am happy to say I have been fighting the good fight with these naysayers who think they are experts because the Food Pyramid is taped to their cabinet walls. I literally explain to them, in their own offices, that milk is not the only, nor the best, source of calcium. Fortified soy milk, oranges, spinach, almonds, and many, many other foods contain rich amounts of bone building calcium, unlike cow's milk which ironically leaches calcium from your bones. Protein, on the other hand, is another story. Is anyone else (pregnant or not) as sick as I am of listening to people tell you you're not getting enough protein in your diets? I try not to become angry with these questions, I know that our society caters to these primitive and outdated beliefs, but come on! Most Americans get twice the recommended amount of protein in their diets. It's not healthy. It often comes accompanied with high amounts of trans and saturated fat, wreaking havok on our poor hearts, livers, and colons. Furthermore, it empowers factory farmers to continue their brutal and horrific practices on innocent animals. Concentrating on vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts never leaves me feeling like I need a "protein fix."

Alicia, I wholeheartedly thank you for all your efforts in putting together this inspiring website, and using your celebrity for something incredibly positive- to speak out on the many benefits of adopting a vegan lifestyle. It has been life changing for me! Here is my story: I began learning about the vegan lifestyle 3 years ago by reading The Kind Diet, Skinny Bitch, and The China Study. I cannot begin to describe how floored I was to learn that my entire life I had been subjecting my body to the chemical shitstorm that is the American Diet. I had always believed that we needed milk and meat to round out a "balanced' meal. When I stopped eating these foods altogether and began exploring all of the beautiful fruits and veggies I had been missing out on, EVERYTHING changed. I no longer got colds. I lost weight. I didn't need to sleep as much. I had more energy and endurance in all my physical pursuits which include running, skiing, yoga, and weightbearing exercise. Unfortunately, though, close friends and family members felt threatened and confused by this new change, rather than happy for me. I did everything I could to make it easier for them, even once choking down beef stew at my boyfriend's mother's house so as not to offend her cooking. Well, that deferential behavior couldn't last forever, and once the positive changes of my new diet and lifestyle started becoming very evident, my close inner circle began accepting my new lifestyle (mostly).

Hi Brianne, I am newly pregnant and just ordered V-Pure EPA/DHA which have come highly recommended, as you are right flaxseeds and walnuts don't provide enough for pregnant women. I believe they are out of stock until Mid-October, but if you order online you get one free because of that. Good luck!

hey:) i've been looking forward to this for a while now out of sheer interest, but now i'm on the verge of expecting so am really concerned that i'll be doing the right things! my midwife is amazing, but a carnivore and not entirely savvy on vegan nutrition. i'm hoping you're planning on starting this blog soon! my main questions are about protein. i was vegetarian with my last pregnancy, so it wasn't really an issue... my midwife says it's superimportant to load up on protein for brain development and the such, but how much is enough of plant based proteins? also, what should i be staying away from? i know peppermint (or all mint for that matter) and caffeine, but anything else i should be steering clear of?

i've read skinny bitch: bun in the oven, but it was more of a reason to go vegan, than specifics about what to eat while pregnant, etc... plus they suggest more processed vegan foods than i like to eat...

so, thanks! can't wait for your advise!

I am so glad that this topic is here. I want to know more about soy and pregnancy. My husband and I recently started TTC and I have heard so many arguments about the amount of soy to consume. I am so confused and want to do the best for my body and (hopefully) my baby.

Are there any health risks to the baby when pregnant and vegan? Should I be concerned about my child receiving enough nutrients while I'm pregnant and when I'm breast feeding?

I am a new vegan, after seeing Alicia on Oprah and reading her book. It has been something I've thought about and flirted with, but now I am full in! I am 26 weeks pregnant. With my first pregnancy I had my daughter on soy formula, but after one year they go on whole milk...my question is, is soy or rice milk ok to provide them with all the necessary nutrients to grow? I am slowly adjusting my 1 1/2 year old girl to healthier eating and she love it, but yes, I would like to get advice on dealing with school, birthday parties, etc. where all the food is pizza/chicken fingers, milk and ice cream or cookies!
P.S. Since becoming vegan (which was in my 3rd month of pregnancy) I have so much more energy, have not ballooned like crazy, and I feel absolutely fabulous! Thank you for all you do!

My husband and I recently became vegan. It's been a few weeks and so far we're doing great! I'm still trying to get the hang of it and make sure we're receiving enough nutrients. We're currently trying to get pregnant. How do I get enough needed nutrients such as protein and iron for a healthy baby, without having to eat soy or soy products?

Most pregnancy books recommend eating cholesterol for healthy brain development. I know that cholesterol crosses the placenta. I can't find any info that says if our bodies make enough cholesterol for the fetus. I have read that after age 2, babies are able to produce adequate amounts of cholesterol on their own (just like adults). Cholesterol is found in breast milk, so that would take care of the first two years. But what about the fetus?

I would love to hear how other vegans are able to get adequate DHA during pregnancy without eating fish or a little eggs and dairy (which both have some DHA if the animals are pastured/grass fed). Algae derived supplements?

Also would love to hear about recommended vegan prenatals, web sites, books, CDs, etc.

I'm really excited to read the upcoming post! Pregnancy is a time when many women question their dietary and lifestyle choices for the good of their baby, and I've known many vegans or vegetarians who start adding in more animal products during pregnancy because they fear their diet (while fine for a non-pregnant woman) isn't enough to support all the radical body changes and rapidly developing new life. I have to admit that at times I have wondered if veganism is the best choice for pregnancy... I recognize that my occasional concerns stem from the overwhelming societal critiques of the vegan diet-- i.e., that it is not natural, isn't anywhere near the "traditional" fertility/pregnancy diet (Nina Planck's book comes to mind!), and is simply insufficient to supply the increased needs of vital nutrients like protein, calcium, iron, B-12, etc. I've read multiple times that vegans who are unable to conceive begin ovulating after adding a little whole milk, eggs or fish back into their diets. I really believe that the more vegans can circulate information to the contrary, the less we will all be inclined to question our choices.
