Although Prop 37, also known as the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, is a California initiative, it has national implications. Prop 37 would require food manufacturers to label any foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. This is a major win for consumers and a setback for companies like Monsanto.
Here's why GMOs are bad.
Under Prop 37, food manufacturers not located in California would still need to follow the new labeling law in order to sell their goods in California. In general, food manufacturers tend to follow the regulations of the state that has the most stringent labeling requirements. So, if Prop 37 passes, we could be seeing a national move toward labeling GMO products.
I want to underscore how serious this issue is. Considering how little we know about the health effects of GMOs, it’s insane that this is an issue we have to fight for. The good news is, when you buy organic, you don’t have to worry about GMOs, but not everyone is able to buy organic all the time. So, let’s make this ridiculous practice known to everyone, and let’s end GMOs. This is the first step – educating consumers so they know what’s in the food they’re buying and the potential dangers it might contain.
Be sure you are registered to vote in the election on November 6, and vote yes on Prop 37.
How can you help get the word out about GMOs and Prop 37?
Show your support for Prop 37 in the comments below and I may publish them in a future blog.

Hello Alicia,
A few years ago now we had an expert speak on GMOs for one of our events. It was most enlightening and we feel more people (especially vegans) need to be better informed on the topic. Please check out our podcast here:

Native Foods wrote about us here:

GMO can be an important tool for animal justice and Vegan Chicago is proud to lead this charge. Let us use every tool available to bring social justice issues to bear!
Thanks for your time. -

Great post Alicia! You are so right that this is a national issue, not just specific to California. Why else would Monsanto and others be spending millions of dollars campaigning against it?? We all have a right to know what is in our food! -
Thanks for informing the public. So many people think that government labeling is currently accurate; they have no idea what goes into the food they eat. Our and our childrens' healths depend on the choices we make today. My husband and I will definitely spread the word to our Cali family.
Love and happiness to you and yours!

Oh this is such a great post. I so totally agree that so many people have no idea what effects that GMO can have. Getting the word out is so important. I wish we still lived in California so we could vote on prop 37. Every vote counts!! -
Too many people are oblivious to the fact that our food is tainted and manipulated by Monsanto, the chemical company that brought us Agent Orange. The effects of Genetically Modified foods are still not completely understood. Getting the word out is necessary in order to inform consumers and bring about a change in the way our food is grown, labeled and distributed. Thank you Alicia, again, for bringing this information to the forefront. Hopefully it will stimulate discussion that will lead to the creation of laws to protect the people from big business. -
Alicia- I am so glad that you are posting this, as I fully expected you to. I am an artist and mother of four living in Cincinnati, Ohio but am taken with the publicity on this...Spreading the word to my community as best I can. Hopefully many, many others will do the same.
Celebrating my third year with a plant based diet as of this Thanksgiving, thanks to your book! Much gratitude your way!
Peace and love always,
Theresa
