The city of West Hollywood is leading the way in animal rights legislation yet again! They've just enacted a ban on the sale of fur clothing the first of its kind in the nation. What this means is clothing retailers will be barred from selling garments made from animal pelts or skin containing hair, wool, or fur. The ordinance makes an exception for leather, vintage pieces and furniture so it's not perfect, but it's definitely a huge step in the right direction! It will go into effect June 30, 2012.
How exciting is this? Are there any great animal rights laws pending where you live? Tell us how we can help you get similar laws passed where you live in the comments below.

What a great way to start a new year for a movement in the right direction. If people would just become aware of the pain and suffering that animals that are caged or trapped must endure just so someone could wear their skin. So tragic to think people don't see that there is really something wrong with this barbaric act for fashion. I hope Hollywood sets the path for the nation and the world to see that this animal abuse needs to be stopped. There are so many good alternatives to animal skin/furs. Thank you for sharing this important news Alicia.
Happy new year to you and your family.

I currently live in Chicago and the city council had voted to ban the sale of fois gras thanks to the urging of PETA. That lasted about year and the city council caved to the pressure of certain high-priced restaurants in the city and voted to ban the ban. It is a disappointing reflection of the lack of concern that politicians have for truly ethical behavior because their focus is on staying in office.

Hi Alicia! I live in Barcelona (Spain) and I'm very happy 'cause from the last day January 1st, 2012, are totally banned the bullfighting in Catalonia. It's a great news! It's the reward of many years of effort!

While not exactly in the animal rights category, San Jose, CA just enacted what is said to be the strictest plastic bag laws in the nation. As with the fur ban, California continues to lead the way to better this planet. True, they do their far share of damage, but at least they're trying to fix it. Lots of folks think California residents are a bunch of wacko's, so I'll defer to the famous quote:
The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the one's who usually do".
So I guess I'm a proud wacko! Here's the new law:

Alicia, I've written & photographed a children's book series profiling kids around the world helping wildlife. I'd love to send you the series, and I'm wondering if there's an address or P.O. box to which I could ship the books. The books profile a little girl in the Amazon tending orphaned, endangered monkeys, a Thai boy caring for elephants, traditional Masaii boys tracking wild dogs for scientists, twin sons of a Serengeti game ranger saving cheetahs, a village of Central American children protecting sea turtles, and a Costa Rican girl protecting sloths and monkeys. The reason I started the series was to create long-lasting funding to these tiny conservation centers (none are government sponsored -- most are just individual families), so of course a portion of proceeds goes back to the centers. I think they're right up The Kind Life's alley (and The Kind Life is right up my alley. Loving veganism and your site gives me the support I need!).

Wow! I never thought this day would come, or, rather, I thought it would take one hundred years or more! The passing of this law is, to me, akin to any other civil rights movement that began with one small group of people making compassion law. I'm in awe and I'm inspired to try to get something similar passed in my city (Rochester). It may take years, but now I see it can be done. I just came home from the grocery store and saw a man wearing a mink hat. I thought, "As a society becomes more and more civilized, there are always those who remain primitive. When homo sapiens emerged as the dominant species, there were still a few neanderthals left in the world. That man is one of the neanderthals." I'm sure he thought he was very sophisticated, but he looked like a throwback to me.

Thank you for your contribution sweetheart (Alicia) I deeply appreciate it! Happy new year and congratulations with your new born xOoxx~R <3 -
Nope. No pending animal rights legislation around me. This is awesome for Hollywood though. We need something like it in the Philly area. The local news is sponsored by Zinman and there is a store very near to me. I cringe whenever I drive by!
