Alicia, I am obsessed with your new take (or new to me at least) on being vegan and eating a macrobiotic diet. I bought your book the day it came out (they were almost sold out on the shelves but she found me one of the last copies in the back!!) and I read it cover to cover in a few days. I am confused on a couple points..you say superheros need to eat whole grains for breakfast but you never list steel cut oats. Can I eat those as my grain in the morning? I don't think it is processed... Also, can you explain why there is so little fruit again? I wish I could eat more fruit! I love berries in my oatmeal in the morning! Congratulations on this amazing book! I hope it is selling out in every city! :)

I'm with you Ashley. A bit overwhelmed. I had no idea that I should be limiting things like fruit, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. I have heard about nightshades before but I dismissed it as nonsesnse. Now that I know they are linked with arthritis because of their alkaloid content, I get it. I think the fruit thing is- only buy fruit that is in season and grown locally and limit yourself to one serving a day because it's so high in natural sugars?? I don't know why oatmeal isn't mentioned. I also eat nutritional yeast and flax seeds often and neither of these are mentioned in the book. She knows her shit, so I'm assuming there's a good reason for their ommision- I just don't know what it is!!!

So I've been reading more on macrobiotics and I guess with too much fruit it is hard to keep your blood alkaline (I think that is the word)...so bascially it has to do with balance.

I'm reading the hip chicks guide to macrobiotics and I think it is a good complement to Alicia's book. WAY more information, but it answers a lot of my questions.

To answer Julia's question, I'm pretty sure it is okay to eat Oatmeal for breakfast. If you look at the "Superhero Meal Plan" section in the book (pages 107-108), it lists oatmeal (granted, only once) as an acceptable breakfast option.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Jacei for answering about the oatmeal. It is such an easy breakfast that I was holding my breath hoping it was good for us!
