I am starting out vegetarian before moving on. What things should I be looking for in other products that I may not think about the fact that it may not be a vegetarian choice?? Does that make any sense??
Hi! Do you mean "red flags" on items that SEEM a veg choice but may not be?
No such thing as a stupid question! :)
To name just a few... Cheese, red 4(cochineal), geletin, elastin, rennet, pepsin, tallow, keratin, white cane sugar, most beer and wine (isinglass)- just what I could think of off hand.
Depends on your definition of vegetarianism.....
Yep, I mean I clearly know that meat itself is not vegetarian....but my questions are with products that are made with animal products. There are alot of them out there that I WOULD have never dreamed. I guess it will be a learning process along the way.
Thanks everyone!
I have to give up beer and wine?? LOL
No there many beers and wines out there that do not have isinglass, which is a gelatin from the bladders of fish usually, sturgeon fish. You can google vegan beer or vegan wine and there are a lot of options.
Thanks for your help! I'm excited to learn along the journey! May take me a while but I'll get there!
Jennifer-
Marshmallows are a BIG non-vegetarian yuck!
Try google-ing "vegan____" if you're stuck on a product :)
so is jello - horse hooves - ick, shudder.
:)
happy journeying jennifer - you sound pumped!
watch out for soups! most are made with chicken broth, even most vegetable soups.
