Hi all, I wanted some tips on cheese and meat replacements that don't include soy. If I eat soy my skin breaks out something awful - painful sores not just acne. I look at some of the wonderful recipes Alicia has but I'm not sure what to replace cheese with when I can't use soy product. Any tips please???

Not which of her recipes you're talking about specifically, but in general.... for cheesey flavor with no soy you can use brewers yeast/ nutritional yeast in vegan mac and cheese or on popcorn, etc. It also has b12 which some vegans are deficient in (myself)
In my lasagna, I use tofu for the ricatta replacement, but creamy polenta also does the job, and good!
I use coconut milk in somebaked goods instead of soy milk becaues it's fatty and fluffy. The nut and hemp milks are good.

You must also be allergic to tempe and seitan?

I can't do soy either- but my problem is soy protein- I know how hard it is to be a veg and not eat soy! I congratulate you for doing it Kirstyn!

Soy is a healthful food and ingredient eaten by a large number of people in the east. Sensitivities are not uncommon, the protein is usually the culprit. My baby daughter's skin broke out when my nursing wife ate soy. If you have this reaction you should avoid soy. It is a challenge to avoid both soy and dairy because so many processed vegan foods are built around soy. Use caution with so-called rice cheese. Many have casein, the dairy protein, as a hidden ingredient also posssibly whey. Check the label. All of the other sources of protein contained in plant food are sufficient for our needs, we don't need soy.
