Hi All ~ I just purchased your book and am very excited about reading it! However I don't believe I'll be getting much encouragement here at home...the first thing my fiancee said was, "you can't go vegan...everyone around you eats meat"...my heart sank...he didn't mean this maliciously, but it's clear that he doesn't think I can do it because I've eaten meat all my life..he feels the desire to eat meat is just nature...he's just afraid I'll try it and fail and feel badly...even still, I've always felt "bad" about and after eating it...didn't really understand why I felt that way until I started looking into what actually happens to the animals. The only time in my life I didn't eat meat for any length of time was when I was pregnant...it made me sick to look at it, smell it, etc...so my thinking is that if I can go that long without it, I can surely pursue this lifestyle with some degree of success...and the fact is that i WANT to...i've wanted to for years but got overwhelmed with the information. I need it to be broken down into a basic form that I can absorb, and I'm thinking the book will do just that. I've found some great links here too that are very informative and interesting. So here I go...did anyone else feel overwhelmed and I guess, not encouraged at home at first? And if so, were you able to change their minds about your lifestyle after they started seeing how much better you felt? I worry about his and our kid's healths as well. Thank you for your help :)

Hi Serena!!!

I am brand new to and just finished the book and am excited to get started. My husband said the same as your did. I was so glad to find the site because I am feeling quite lonely on this new journey. I am coming here for support because I have decided this is the life I want and if I have to take the journey alone so be it.

I look forward to talking to you. Enjoy the book!!!

Hi, all!
I am a veggie, and recently vegan- about 2 months or so- with a family of omnies...it is not always easy. Especially my oldest daughter, but that is because she is 11 and going through that phase of not wanting to go along with anything if I suggest it... sigh...
It does get easier, and the more times you put delicious vegan food on the table the more open they will be to it. This seems to be a wonderful place for support, everyone seems so nice and encouraging- lots of positive energy!!! i love that.
Give it time, and you will meet more and more people who feel the same as you do, and your loved ones will come to understand how important this is to you. You will even be surprised how many people you know who are omnies that secretly long to be veggies! at least that has been my experience- which i never thought could happen in Texas!!!smiley-laughing.gif

Hey Lynnette!
Thanks! I've been working the past 2 nights so I haven't gotten to finish the first chapter yet. Tonight's my last though for a few days so I'll be doing some reading when I'm off :) This really is a great place for support and encouragement! I'm starting off with just not having meat and dairy...it's day 3 now so far :) And I'm really trying to cut down on sugar too...keep me posted on how you're doing too!! Thanks to you too french_momma for writing!! Everyone's words help keep me motivated and inspired!! Have a great day All! :)
P.S. - Any suggestions on some healthier good eats for Halloween? We have three kids and I'm sure the house is going to be loaded with candy!! :)

Hi Serena,
Start off with little steps. Begin to incorporate vegan ingredients into your kitchen and dishes into your repertoire at your own pace. Once you have a slew of fave recipes and your fridge and pantry already have all those (previoulsy foreign to you) funky, vegan items -- it'll be easier.

I "accidentally" became a vegetarian last year by simply trying to incorporate nutritionally dense food into my diet. Initially, I never would have even tried to give up meat, but one day I realized I hadn't had it in weeks and really didn't need/want it. My husband is not a vegetarian, but b/c I don't cook meat I'd say he's about an 80% vegetarian -- and he's not complaining since there's a lot of delicious, satisfying vegetarian/vegan meals out there!
For me it was a natural (unintentional!) transition. Now I'm working on going vegan ...

Hey!
I totally understand where you are coming from. I come from a family of hard core Italian chefs and it can be a pain. They still make fun of me for my veggie lifestyle. However, after they releized that it was not a phase they really warmed up to it more. My grandparents make whole wheat pastas for me and seperate them so I dont have to add the sausage sauce if I dont want... things like that. In fact, after they saw how much healthier and happier I was most of them actually started eating more veg even if they didn't mean to! I"m sure your hubby will support you when he starts to see how great you look and feel.
