I started the vegan diet 8 days ago and yesterday my colon started having some painful spasms. Is this typical?

what do you mean? like cramping? might be detoxing. is it still bad? not sure what you mean. but if you ate all regualr american food and suddenly went vegan....nothing bad can ahppen to you as long as you are eating all fo the kind foods. greens, whole grains. veg....so unless you ate something else you should be fine...keep us poted so we know you are ok.

This might be kinda gross, but you probably have a monstrous poo brewing and it's pushing through all the stuff that's built up over the years in your large intestine. Give it a few weeks to do it's thing before you give up your new diet. It takes about 3-4 weeks for your body to reprogram itself for medication, and the same goes for food.
If you want to help it move a little faster, stop at the store and pick up any kind of dark fruit (prunes, plums, black grapes, etc.), leafy greens and fiber. Eat in that order and stay close to a toilet for a few days. It's a natural way to unclog anything fighting its way out and clean out anything you don't want in there anymore.
I hope you feel better soon!! Good luck!

I just went back to being a vegetarian after 3 years of eating meat and my tummy was not happy! It took me about 2 weeks to feel "regular" again. So yes, I agree with both Robyn and Alicia. Your body is adjusting.

Well, I'm feeling much better. It only lasted for 2 days. Maybe just more fiber than what I'm used to.
thanks all
